I'm pretty sure that designation came about exactly because using the different nomenclatures for different defensive schemes makes it confusing. EDGE makes it clear what position they play, regardless of whether their team ran a 4-3 or a 3-4. Obviously there are differences between playing DE and OLB, but they're also similar enough that a general term for both makes sense. Then they capitalized it for the reasons above. This is kind of a guess though
