I've been wanting-- needing a good lightbox for a looong time, and I found this recently: http://www.indieicing.com/blog/2009/11/14/part-5-selling-handmade-online-lets-build-a-large-lightbox.html It inspired me to do the same... except I may have gone overboard Of course it's not quite there yet. Some lighter, thinner fabric would probably diffuse the light more while letting more in. Maybe nylon, or fleece like that guide suggests? Also, after some experimental pictures: (This is why the lightbox is so big; Infinity is over 3 feet long!) I can see that a smooth backdrop would be a lot better, like paper. The problem is finding 4-foot wide strips of paper and fabric. I'll check out a few craft stores like Michael's tomorrow. I also need clamps to hold the fabric, and the side lights really need to be mounted above and on the outside of the fabric. Still, I'm pretty excited Total cost so far is ~$43.

That's a great link, and I will most likely end up with paper for the background just because its the easiest to keep smooth. I've managed to get decent pictures with just a roll of white paper and regular overhead lights w/o diffusion: But there would always be shadows and the light would never seem to be the same from one set to the next. What I'm really looking for is consistency so I can minimize the editing I have to do in Photoshop. I will definitely look into some different colors though, since I'll be out looking for backgrounds anyway.

Carbohydrates posted:IMO, you want shadows. Helps avoid the 'floating in a void of nothingness' effect. Here's a lego thing and a non-lego thing. These were shot on a piece of white foamboard with natural indirect lighting, no flash. This is really the kind of effect I'm looking for. In the pics I posted you can see the shadows are a lot sharper and show where the light is coming from, because they were done with directional/uncovered ceiling lights and no diffusion. And yeah I might have to go with brighter lights too, those housings can handle up to 150 watts, and the lights I used were compact fluorescent at only 23 watts, meaning I can get quite a lot more light if needed. I'm hoping to avoid a lot of heat output if I can though.

Baruch Obamawitz posted:question re: those ball turrets from the star wars sets: do they take technic axles or only pins? LDD says an axle will fit whereas a pin won't, but I'm not sure that a) that's right given instructions that say use pins and b) it's not clear whether the axle engages anything so it can be held in. I just tried it to make sure, and they only take pins; its weird that LDD only allows axles (unless there's been a design change?). Though it has an x-shaped hole, an axle will just spin and not be held at all while a pin will click in, and then if you spin it, it will spin roughly because of the weird hole. Why they designed it this way, . InfinEight fucked around with this message at 17:44 on Sep 29, 2010 |

It's been talked about in the old thread I think, I can't remember what kind of profits others have gotten. Basically I think, unless you buy hot sets and sit on them until they're out of production, you won't make a lot of profit after the time invested, AND ebay/paypal fees. Green Grocer, Cafe Corner, stuff like that are just expensive enough that most won't pick them up on a whim in the store, making them more rare and desirable after their run is over. But like the examples posted, if you try and sell them for 3x MSRP, you could be sitting on them for a long time. I've never been able to justify it, personally, since I'd rather just keep the sets for myself and the profits seem too slim to bother.

Dead thread is dead today. I've done more tweaking with my lightbox and I'm pretty happy with the results. As others have suggested, the key is more light! I started with compact fluorescent since they'd be lighter and cooler, but they weren't working for me, so I switched to halogens: These are un-edited and after getting another worklight and trimming the sheet, I'm pretty pleased. Obviously I can't get rid of the shadows entirely (though if the object is on a stand it helps) but this setup responds to the camera and photoshop a lot better. The 4 lights give a lot better spread as well, with two vs four: The best thing about this is I can take the whole thing apart when I don't need it, and I can even make a half-size version for smaller stuff if I want. Hopefully I can finally get my cargo ship photographed soon. Also, this thing is drat cool- a giant sea plane in the old technic style. Looks like it has working everything. This way I could also use a half-pin to help keep the wings in position, so it has some advantages. It wasn't entirely intentional for it to be similar to a Vic Viper, it just occurred to me that if it had a tailfin, it wouldn't be far off. I had fun with it anyway, and thanks

I decided to put my Lunar Limo together, and right away Brick Daddy became my favorite mini-fig. The set itself is pretty great, though I can't help but think it would have been even more amazing if it used chrome gold. Either way I'm really pleased and glad I bought it, and I hope Lego finds a use for Brick Daddy's head in other sets (I still think the gold one looks like a headcrab).

I've always felt that there is more than one way to execute an idea, and I hate for people to think my way is the 'official way', when their ideas could easily be better than mine. Okay so... my local Smith's/Fred Meyer has all their Star Wars Lego on sale to varying degrees. I was tempted by Grevious' Fighter, another Y-Wing, etc... but the Clone Turbo Tank turned out to be a huge bargain. Not only was it marked down to $96 instead of $120, but the lady at the checkout informed me of a 10% of all toys coupon, which she then applied to my purchase. That means I got 1141 pieces for $86.40, (rounded up $0.08 per piece). Now I hafta decide if I should open it or save it, and depending on my paycheck tomorrow, I may not be able to resist one more set

So I was thinking about making a review of the Clone Turbo Tank, but there's already a couple decent ones. Instead I went back to Smith's because (for my loyal and unending use of their fresh values card) I got a $15 back coupon in the mail. I settled on General Grievous’ Starfighter mostly for that sweet cockpit. With the coupon, the sale, and 10% off, I got it for ~$21. There's review here if you're interested.
