Don't know why I never thought to look for a Lego thread before, but I've been doing a lot recently.

Here's some Twitter threads of images of the stuff I've built this year.

Also if you want to "look for a sale / try to snipe on eBay" the Ducati Panigale is just above your requested price range but it has two gears plus neutral and a working chain. Similar to the big expensive BMW, the engine build is so cool that you end up stopping on that step and playing with the engine for a week while it's on your desk before you go on and finish putting the bike parts around it

Here's a silly question. Can you commission designs in Lego? Like for specific objects? What's that process like?
I have definitely received a custom Lego model of my dog that my ex bought through an IG ad. It took forever to get here but it’s cool. So I’m sure they’d make something besides a pet.

That is incredibly sweet! But as a gift I don't figure you know about how much it cost?
I found the invoice from the box and it's from "United Doggos" and cost $200, so, not a good price-per-piece but you are paying for the labor of someone creating the plans. It came with a PDF of instructions that was relatively close to what you expect from a Lego set and it uses genuine Lego pieces.

Yeah having the engine in neutral on the motorcycles kicks rear end, if they're in neutral then you can magically roll the wheels and make the chain move without any of the pistons or gears moving

How do the licenses work, are they per-unit royalties? Maybe Atari said $100 per or something and Lego was like "well then it must be SRP $250" or whatever to justify it

Pick A Brick is situational for me because they have minimums for both Best Seller and Standard parts, so if I'm doing an order that calls for both, I'll need it to A) be a pretty decent size order to hit the minimums and skip the fees, and B) not use out-of-date pieces that I can't get through PAB. As a result, I rarely use it.

On the other hand, one big appeal of PAB is that you can stock up on parts that are limited in quantity in official sets. Those koi fish tiles from 2021 that I mentioned were on PAB, so if you decided you wanted 100 of them for some reason, it's a far better resource than trying to buy from BrickLink. If you desire larger quantities of current production pieces in new condition, go for it.

The vast, vast bulk of my LEGO ordering is through BrickLink. Yes, it's rare that one seller has all the parts you need, but I can usually get a MOC ordered from 2 or 3, which isn't so bad, and the parts are arriving at my door in less than a week (from North American sellers) as opposed to, like, a month down the line or however long PAB Standard orders take right now. Prices per element are usually better and, of course, you can buy non-current-production parts on BL that aren't available on PAB. If I'm ordering parts for a specific MOC, I am using BL 99% of the time.

If you're a big loving nerd and you join an RLUG, you can also use LUGBulk once per year to order current production pieces in massive quantities at extremely reduced prices. It's like PAB on steroids. I use this if I want a few thousand of something and am willing to wait, or to plan really large MOCs like the 64 stud-wide dark green warehouse I have backburnered right now.
Thanks for this Carb, I have had your tiny house + truck MOC bookmarked for a while and I was trying to figure out how best to get it

Yesterday I did my first order of parts, for Carbohydrates's Tiny House & Chevrolet C10: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-22021/Carbohydrates/tiny-house-chevrolet-c10/

Really excited to build it, was able to get the parts in 3 orders for about $70, which is reasonable for 648 pieces. Thanks for your work Carbs! I replaced a couple of the brick red pieces with brown because they were cheaper, and the hitch thing that was black was much cheaper in yellow and since it didn't seem to be visible based on the PDF build steps I did that too.

Ah, weird. Glad it wasn't an issue! And good call on dark red for the steps.
Yeah, had to do something other than pay apparently $13 per step for the reddish brown. The other major substitution was $2.50 for the yellow Technic toothed plate vs. $7 for the black one, and you can't even see that part after building, and then $1.40 for the brown hinge top instead of $5 for the reddish brown one. I was able to get 3 lots of parts for a total of about $75 shipped, which I think is perfectly fine for a custom 650 piece build.

While they are "trucks" on the outside, the Monster Jam sets all come with alternate builds for different types of cars as well. The Megaldon has a formula car build with the teeth being the bars for the cockpit, and the Dragon has a drag racer.
