Can someone explain how companies like Mega Bloks can legally rip off Lego so shamelessly? Even as a kid I could see how blatantly wrong it was.

Exactly. The last patentable change they made to the basic brick design was introducing tubes, and that was in the '60s or early '70s. Some of the more recent part designs have their own specific protection, but Mega Bloks (unlike some of the others) have always been very good about designing their own specialised parts, not just copying Lego's.

Maybe they make their own specialized pieces, but they are a parasite on Lego's success. Otherwise they'd succeed making their own system of brick sizes instead of needing to make pieces that fit with Lego so they can sell them to grandmothers who don't know better.

Tente tried that and were quite successful for a while, so were the original non-compatible Best-Lock designs. But having them all compatible is better for consumers, really, especially now that Lego's quality is slipping. Do you also campaign against interoperability between software? Don't forget that Lego's patent was based on a stolen design in the first place.

It's not better for the consumers when I have to spend two hours picking Mega Bloks out of every goddamn Lego pile I buy :argh: And the software comparison is a non sequitur for a variety of reasons. I would like to read more about the stolen design though; do you have a link?

I love the old Technic style. The new Technic beams without studs piss me off because they're so much less multi-purpose and make mixing Technic with other themes more difficult. I've never really bonded with studless construction anyway. The bumps are part of the character of Lego sets :(

I'm 99% done replacing all the missing parts on the Intergalactic Command Base I got as part of a big lot 7 years ago. One grey stanchion and slightly shorter hoses are all that's left. We built it for the first time ever yesterday. I lusted after this set all through my childhood, so it was a rather gratifying moment. Those trans-red castle shields are stupidly expensive, $2-3 each.

Question for 'you people' - I've been giving some consideration to the idea of buying a Lego table, the kind with the (4) removable 32x32 baseplates on top... any of you seen/used one of these? Are they good/bad?

Oh yeah, this would be for my 3yo & .5yo, not for me

When I was a kid, my dad took a double-wide wooden hospital door, put sturdy legs on it, and gave it to me as a Lego table. It took up half my room, but it was the best thing ever. I used the knob-hole for all kinds of cool trap-doors and deathpits, and I'd build bridges over to my bed. The floor, of course, was either lava or shark-infested water.

I got my 4 year old daughter a couple of the small sets of starwars legos and we did the advent calender this year, she is having a blast with them. The real haul is that because my daughter is the first to ask for legos my parents gave me a present that was supposed to be mine back in 1984 but wasn't given because of a difference in the number of presents between me and my brother. It has been sitting wrapped in 1984 wrapping paper for the past 26 years in my parents basement. I open it up and I have a new in box 6971 Inter-Galactic Command Base, I remember wanting a space base forever as a kid. I quick search on brick link gives me a guy selling one for $750 sealed new in the box. Now the problem, build the space station I always wanted or sell it and buy an rear end ton more legos for me and my daughter to build.

Holy crap. Sell it, buy a used command base for ~100, and blow the rest on other cool sets for your daughter. Don't open it though. NIB is insane!

When I was 10 years old, my best friend Billy moved into a nearby apartment that had a huge fish tank built into the back patio. His mom stocked it with fish, and we used to play legos out there every afternoon. You see back in the 80s, we didn't have these legos for pussies you guys have now. You knew you were playing with space legos because some pieces were translucent, and the little yellow dudes had helmets. That's how you figured that out.

And one day, we discovered that the plastic nozzle at the end of the fish tank air compressor fit quite snuggly into the centrally placed hole on this certain ubiquitous lego piece. This thing: http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/970632_1_x_2_Beams. Not airtight, but enough that tightly built lego constructs would pressurize sufficient to keep water out.

Out first undersea mission featured two bewildered grasshoppers manning a decidedly boxy submarine. We put a window in it for them, which I can only suppose in retrospect magnified their terror. It seemed important to me at the time that they be able to visually participate in the process. They returned dry and alive. Two weeks later, a veritable grasshopper Rapture spread across the fish tank bottom, powered by three compressors and populated by over a hundred grasshoppers. Enough water and humidity squeezed in to keep them alive, bolstered by random heaps of greens we hurled into the airlocks.

A month after that, a freak accident broke open one of the corridors, sending the entire population into the merciless sea, to be devoured by a large parrotfish named Gertrude. Gertrude died the next day, presumably of indigestion.

Legos own. RIP Grasshopper Atlantis & Gertrude. :denmark:
