Where do we host images these days? Either way apparently if anyone gets laid off after July 1, no severance; his bosses want to make his pay cut permanent, and said that they were using the pandemic as an excuse to cut salaries. So, things going well at SI!

For context: Atlanta United announced an interview with Barstool Sam, people called out the team, they deleted the tweet and the podcast episode. Sam got mad and wrote a screed about being "canceled" and I have no interest in reading it, but it apparently mentioned a bunch of soccer writers with a bunch of whataboutism. Grant might just not like that photoshop (it's gone around before) but whatever, screw barstool and anyone who works for them. -- A glorious story in 4 acts: https://twitter.com/justnfields/status/1292618070545108992 https://twitter.com/dannykanell/status/1292624533292298241 https://twitter.com/ClayTravis/status/1292567458231005185 https://twitter.com/edsbs/status/1292676856483926016?s=20

Also did anyone actually put out any reviews that completely glossed over problems? As far as I can tell, no one gave the game an uncritical 10/10. Given that Albert didn’t actually mention any, I feel like I can assume he just made up poo poo for no reason. IGN gave PC 9/10 and consoles 4/10. Gamespot: 7/10. So who is he talking about? Also lol: https://twitter.com/mikemcwhertor/status/1340808231430582280?s=21 Edit: Yeah, my friends who have played on PC range from probably a 6-9/10 range, but all said I should wait if I do play it. And most articles and discussion seemed to follow that as well. Just mind-boggling to pick out, of all the issues of the release, that game reviewers working to finish the game in a few days are the real problem. As a NHL, EPL, and motor racing fan, this is huge. I actually preferred NBCSN to ESPN, so I had the Sling Blue package for many years. I had been considering jumping over to Fios cable now that it’s an option in my new place (Sling has been fine, but the streaming quality for sports ain’t great)... Now I’m wondering how many of those will actually make it to USA, and how much of the rest will be shuttled off to Peacock.

And given they are one of the first to do this model (publicly) they'll tweak and see what works. Definitely have more runway and agility to make budget cuts without losing people versus the Athletic who will surely have to cut huge chunks off if they keep running at -20%. And what are the Athletic spending their money on? Is it lots of sunk money to land The Big Writers, too much engineering, money for execs that don't really lead to getting more subs? All of the above probably. At least most of Defector's money is going towards making more money given their soft paywall apparently working well and will likely continue to get better, and it's not reliant on unsustainable things like practically giving subs away or having it bundled with T-Mobile. It's a shame because there are some great writers at The Athletic; the NWSL expose from the last week will shake up the entire sport for years. But perhaps writers like Meg Linehan or Katie Strang could do the same at The Defector or another similar site.

You can even see it with motorsport pros who change to a different discipline. Plenty of folks going between NASCAR, IndyCar, F1 and having different levels of success, but it's definitely not instant. I know he's older, but if an all-time NASCAR driver like Jimmy Johnson struggles in IndyCar, the amateur driver might not even get to lap 2, let alone finish the race at a slow pace.

Capitals Playoff games were (accidentally?) commentary free on the SAP option. it was almost like being in the arena, especially during the always tense and usually tragic Game 7’s. World Cup in 2018(?) had an option to see the whole field and also was commentary free. But yeah, it’s a niche request so you’re usually not gonna be able to find it done purposely.

The Thunder Bay moment was definitely a “shine is off the apple” for me and a lot of other sports analysts I know - it exposed him trying to do quick hits with data without inspecting a map and then blaming it on the data provider. It took much longer for 538 to finally fall, probably thanks to the Trump election and a lot of their coverage, but him going full covid truther probably didn’t help. Also creating a newsroom that was too toxic that Mona and other brilliant women of color wanted no parts of, so they never had a better idea than trying to predict elections.
