I've never been a huge Kanye fan, but after hearing the album is good from pretty much everywhere I gave it a download from the Zune store. And...Yeah, it's pretty loving good.

Dang I don't know why people diss on Kanye so much. Sure he's done some douchebag things, but he's probably the best rapper of our time.

I'm saying this because of the lyrical content of his songs, like:

1) Hey Mama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR3rrQ3LyJc (one of my favorite songs ever)
2) Jesus Walks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYF7H_fpc-g (probably the best Jesus song you can find)
3) Family Business: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8yoxyIu0s8

All of them have incredible lyrics, far better than any other rapper imo. Plus the messages in his songs are positive, none of this gun/drug bullshit you find with all the mainstream one-hit wonder rappers.

His new album took a listen through to get warmed up, but I like it a lot too. Kanye is awesome and he deserves the fame (and some of the poo poo) he gets.

I'd just like to say that I vastly prefer the instrumental version of Jesus Walks to the real one, except for the part where the only lyrics they didn't remove is the guy yelling "NIGGAZ!" 3 or 4 times, now completely out of context.

I'm kind of pissed it cut out a whole section of the song. Also it really needs to have a warning for epileptic people at the start because Jesus Christ. Other than that, great video.

A few months later, and I'm --- not regretting, but second-guessing my decision to buy the album on vinyl. I just never listen to it: most every song is pretty high-rated in my digital library, but it's a pretty drat wearying album to take in all in one sitting.

I think I've only spun the entire thing, beginning to end, over the three platters three or four times since I bought it. Compare this to Big Boi's album, which gets dragged out about once every two weeks or so.

I would listen to it much, much more myself if it wasn't spread out on 3 discs. The fact that two sides have one song each doesn't help.

I went to watch the All Of The Lights video on youtube, and they actually have added an epilepsy warning to the start of it.

I continue to trot it out every couple of weeks and still enjoy it immensely. The first nine songs are fantastic. However, Blame Game and Hell of a Life are by far the low points of the album for me and are both too long. Still one of my favorite albums ever.

I love both of those songs. They do both go on a bit too long though, especially Blame Game. They should have cut down (or totally removed) the entire thing with Chris Rock at the end of Blame Game. I think Devil In A New Dress has the same problem too. But I still like the album more every time I listen to it.

“Hell of a Life” is a song about a fantasy of not loving but *marrying* a porn star, and as such is more broadly about the idea of collapsing the barriers between fantasy and reality, both as something that many people can do, unconsciously, in a negative way, and something that legitimately and literally occurs at the extremes of fame and wealth.

Hell Of A Life is simultaneously about both just loving a porn star and marrying one. In reality, he is doing nothing but loving her in the bathroom ("married in the bathroom, honey moon on the dance floor, got divorced at the end of the night"), but is fantasizing about what actually marrying her would be like.

I think Devil in a New Dress is the best song on the album. You didn't make the :stare: face when you heard that beat ?

Woody Allen once said of orgasms "even the worst one I ever had was right on the money." I feel that way about this album. It's the worst (read: my least favorite) track on the album, but I still love it. Yeah, I would have made it a bit shorter, but I don't actively avoid it or anything. In fact, this album is one of maybe half a dozen albums that when I listen to it, I listen to it. I hardly ever just pick out one or two songs from it, I just put it on from track one and go all the way through.

On a different topic, Kanye said that he's going to have a new album (not Watch the Throne) dropping this Summer. Before this album, he never had one that really stood out to me. I liked the singles, and a few of the other tracks, but none of them had the level of impact that Fantasy did. So I'm really, really hoping he's able to maintain the level of polish this album had, but the fact that it's coming so soon after this worries me. Am I alone in this?

I don't hate the Fergie part in All of the Lights at all. I in fact didn't even know it was Fergie until someone in this thread mentioned it. It's quick, and I don't find it grating or anything. Which is odd, because I have hated every other thing involving Fergie ever except for the movie Planet Terror.

While I don't love the Rock thing, as I said earlier, it's not supposed to be a skit or jokey. It's a direct follow up to the last few lines of the song, about how her phone called him back while she was with another guy, and he heard her entire conversation with some other dude (Rock).

Yes, but it has another purpose other than just the humor in it. Also, I'm fairly certain I've heard almost the exact bit before this album, from Rock in his stand up, but hosed if I know where. I just think it works as more than most stupid rear end skits on rap albums do (all of the Kyle Kaniff or whatever the gently caress poo poo from Eminems early albums spring immediately to mind as examples of why I usually hate that poo poo) and serves a thematic purpose with the rest of the song. I still usually skip it.
