There was one Fandalorian I remember from way back in the day (who was actually Canadian of all things) who was a full-on fascist apologist. He would actually go on about how Franco and Mussolini were great leaders and all the stuff against them are just trumped-up lies (not sure if he ever made the jump to defending Hitler although at one point I do think he cast doubts on the Holocaust). He also believed that the Catholic Church was literally a flawless and perfect organization that has done no wrong and is single-handedly responsible for creating Western civilization in the middle ages.

I don't care if writing anything about the Big 3 between EP IV and V is dicey ground, Stover and Zahn are the only two authors that can write them worth a drat.

While I'm definitely not entirely happy with everything the EU has given us. I accept all of it, even the bad. And enjoy it to a point. I don't want a Galaxy where everything is perfect. Did it piss me off when Jacen did a total 180 and became a massive dick? Of course. But I enjoyed being drawn into the story moreso because of my love for a character whom I never thought could have done that. I like knowing that characters have flaws, and react to changes in their universe. Even negative ones.

I'm totally with you in theory.

It's the manner in which many of the random or unconventional things happen that cause me (and I assume many people) to just throw up their hands. LotF spoilers I don't mind that Jacen became a Sith but I hated that he didn't do it because of trauma or resignation or an insight during his journeys but, rather, almost accidentally because he was basically tricked about the ramifications and realities and was taught that he would be able to deal with the dark side in a clinical and objective way. He was never that stupid as a teenager or adult until the plot demanded he be.

So I agree that the overall notions of some of the things that happen that fans cry out about are actually pretty cool but it's often the way that they happen that cause problems.

I'll give you that one. I also got the idea that his descent was a bit too convenient for the sake of the plot, rather than a believable and justifiable reason. Still quite enjoyed the Legacy novels though.

I'm also absolutely LOVING the new Fate novels. I may be alone in that, but goddamn it's captured my attention.

At least the YJK series was honest about what it was. I don't know if I would agree that the quality of writing is on par with LotF but the stories are appropriate and don't just oooooze with disdain for the readership. The way Jacen and the Mon Cal took over the government - a loophole in some forgotten document - is disdainful to the audience. Mara Jade not telling Luke that she was about to go try to hunt down Jacen and the subsequent attempts by her dead body to show that Jacen is a Sith were disdainful to the audience. Jacen's fall the dark side was so poorly thought out that it was disdainful to the audience. The Mandalorian side story made no sense and was disdainful to the audience and the series itself. Denning's attempts to counter Traviss' hack job was disdainful to the audience.

Most of that stuff isn't even believable in the Star Wars universe and the rest is way too convenient to accept as part of the story. It's all noticeable when you view through the eyes of a cynic.

I hate to say it, Esroc, because you seem like a good guy but: run. Run from these forums! You will be pointed to so many plot holes and problems in your beloved Star Wars EU that shame will replace adoration and your heart will wither into the little charred husk that the rest of us have.

This was pretty much my point. YJK was terrible, but it wasn't disingenuous about what it was. At the very least, it wasn't a clusterfuck written by three hackjob writers; instead, it was a mostly-coherent story written by a single hackjob writer.

You've got a few good weekends ahead of you. The last two in the series aren't quite as good but are still worth picking up if you can.

Stackpole should win some sort of literary award. He wrote a series of books based on two of the greatest computer games of all time, which were in turn based on three of the greatest movies of all time, and the result was a pile of pulpy fun. The chances of that happening ever again in history are minute.

You realise you're two books short of the full series right?

Also on the announcements: I'm so glad the multi-book series are out the door after the abortion that was LOTF. Fate of the Jedi basically seems to be a series designed to unfuck the one that came before it and that's a pretty big indication they cocked up

Hopefully this will lead to better authors writing with more regularity (Zahn, Stover, even Luceno) with less horrific storylines and continuity gently caress ups (Traviss, Denning). Also hopefully it'll leave us with more novels that stand on their own as great books, instead of just feeling like the latest episode in a soap.

Having not read any EU books since the late 90s, and since I was laid off this time last year, I decided to visit the library and catch up. Not seeing the need to read the Black Fleet Crisis (where I left off) I figured I would just catch up using wikipedia and start fresh with NJO.

As I was reading that series I followed these threads and learned of Traviss. Soon as I worked myself through the series and into LoTF, I began to breathe a heavy sigh when I would see her name on the next installment.

I finally had to stop 75 pages into Sacrifice. The Boba Fett story line was pointless and brought the already thin plot line to a hault. She's really ruined that character for me for quite a while.

A lot of it was very good. Definitely the funniest book in the series, kind of like four-buddies-on-a-camping-trip-gone-awry only their trip involves interplanetary diplomacy. But they weren't shooting down TIE fighters in space with the fate of the galaxy in the balance, they were in-atmosphere on some backwater planet on a turkey shoot. There was no diverse cast of expendables who actually get killed, it was four ubermensch carving a bloody swathe. The stakes were low and there was very little tension, even compared to the other books.

Before you start Vector Prime, stop and consider: do I want to know what happens next? Seriously think about all you have read so far and how you could just stop reading and be content with what you have.

Then you'll just read it and Chewbacca will die and a cold breeze will carry to you the sound of George Lucas' laughter from atop his throne of skulls and money.

In hindsight, maybe - I've read very little that comes after. Do you feel it in the book? Not especially. "Here's a planet you've never heard of. We want it because it might be really really useful later. Oh and the people on it are kind of nice but backwards and that can get kind of annoying, but be diplomatic." Compared to Blackmoon, Thyferra and Coruscant, on which pretty much hinge the fate of the galaxy, or even the various Wraith raids. All these planets were chock-full of much smarter bad guys with much better gear, things often went wrong, the bad guys could launch a capable offensive, there are some decent oh-crap moments, and people got killed. In Adumar, everything works out fairly predictably and happily. Only one guy we sort-of like dies, offstage. A billion nameless dudes get slaughtered but the good guys are without a scratch. That's pretty different from what made the rest of the series so good.
