Clearly designed to maximize search engine hits, I find it hard to believe that anyone can possibly believe anything written on there. Seriously, what the gently caress is he thinking?

I realize this was covered in the OP, but can we talk about Karen Traviss a little bit? I'm fully aware that she's a little bit crazy, but none of you guys thought stories about the Mandalorians were cool? I enjoyed the Republic Commandos books immensely. She had that thing about making GBS threads on Jedi, but I think it IS a little bit hosed up that the Jedi took the keys to this clone army with hardly a second thought. I've always enjoyed stories where the Jedi aren't portrayed as infallible as they are in the movies. (I also know that even sort-of defending Traviss may cue :argh:. I just want to be friends. Really!)

That may just be a problem with the movies, but wasn't it shown in most of the EU material that the Jedi did face a number of ethical difficulties, often deep ones, in taking command in this fashion?

I just remember hearing that this was expanded on, as I haven't really looked at anything from that era in a long time.

I actually think that personal dislike of Traviss is pretty justified. She did do stuff like compare her detractors to the Taliban, write about fantasies in which they were killed, mocked them for having less sex than her imaginary characters, and posted about how she hated them in forums around the internet that had nothing to do with Star Wars and/or the issue at hand, essentially furthering the same pro-Traviss/anti-Traviss debate at the same time she claimed she just wanted it to end. Then there is her tendency to cry sexism or anti-military bias at all of her critics. She's incredibly petty, vindictive and two-faced, so yes, I think those are personal issues that do affect my ability to enjoy her work.

Then there is also stuff like how she retcons and overwrites things for no reason - for all that she claims to like Mandalorians she has tried to retcon all pre-Traviss Mandalorian history away so only her version survives as the canonical Mandalorian history (for example, she changed the spelling of Mandalore's capitol city and also retconned the Mandalorian City of Bone to be an amusement park fake passed off as an actual city to gullible Imperials by WALON VAU THE GREAT). Not to mention changing stuff for literally no reason at all, even remotely related to her personal likes and dislikes (like changing Callista's last name for no reason). And finally there is the fact that she is very transparent with her blatant political views that she wedges into her work - she really really hates Tony Blair and lo and behold in her LOTF books Jacen spouts a number of Tony Blair quotes.

Not to mention the fact that:
1) The series is called "Republic Commando" and not "Mandalorian"
2) Her books are ostensibly based on an FPS combat game yet most of the "action" consists of people sitting around talking about how they love the Mandalorians and hate the Jedi
3) If you actually think her books have any sort of nuanced critique of the Jedi rather than blind irrational hatred no matter the logic of the viewpoint (remember, Traviss said she stood up and cheered in the theater when she saw the Order 66 montage in ROTS) then I just don't know what to tell you

I really have to wonder how the people around her took that.

And has she always felt this way, like, since A New Hope came out? Because that's kind of hosed up.

Tarkin was in charge on the Death Star, but it's always been a little murky who ranked higher in the Empire. I think it depended on the situation. Not to mention, when he was killing the officers in ESB, this was after the disaster of the Death Star, after which I think he was given more control. The point is, by the time ESB came around, Vader was outranked only by the Emperor itself.

And yeah, the analogy isn't perfect, because the head of White House Security is in no way as powerful as Darth Vader. The Empire rules with an iron fist, with no checks or balances. They answer to no one, because the Senate was dissolved. Vader can do whatever he wants, and the only thing stopping him is if it pisses off the Emperor, or if all the officers get together to stop him. But the latter isn't really likely, as they're all scared shitless of him (above picture not-withstanding).

It's also worth noting that in the original draft of ROTJ, the commander who met Vader at the beginning on the second Death Star was a Grand Moff, and had a much larger role. (He may have still been a Grand Moff in the final product, but it wasn't mentioned and didn't matter.) He outranked Vader, and was undermining him the entire movie. But that was cut out by the time they got to filming, so it doesn't count.

Hmm, I thought I remembered reading somewhere that Palpatine actually had legally established Vader as the second-ranking power in the Empire by A New Hope, though I guess that wasn't always the case (influenced, of course, by the changes in the overall story that occured between production of Episodes 4 and 5.)

It's funny, most Traviss fans say something like "She's the only author who ever touched upon the ethics of the clone army!" but I remember a lot of the Clone Wars EU from before she was around had it as a theme. It's a pretty big theme in the Cestus Deception novel (where clones and their culture is a big feature, as well as a clone slowly becoming more like a 'real' person) and the Republic comic series featured it a LOT, also.

This is definetly the case from what I remember, as there it did seem like it was made clear that the Jedi did view them as individuals (not universally, I think, but for the most part), and did care enough about them not to treat them as disposable people (in the way a number of Republic bureaucrats did.)

But then, given Traviss' apparent pride in the fact that she never read the material of anyone else in the EU, it's not surprising that would never come up for her.

In fact, while they weren't free from problems, I would say the Republic comics were a high point of the EU.
