Lucasarts could literally release TIE Fighter and X-Wing on steam so that it was compatible for newer PCs and they'd rake in shitloads of cash. Thats all they need to do, they released their OTHER games. Why not TIE? What is verboten about it?

Last time I talked to a guy from Lucasarts about it, he said that this kind of stuff was indeed on the table, but usually only one, maybe two guys would get tasked to porting this stuff to Steam so it took longer than usual. For some stuff, I imagine it's much easier to port than stuff like X-Wing, so while the wait sucks, I'm sure we'll see it at some point.

So I was cleaning out some stuff from my recent move and went through my book collection.

I found out that I own all the Thrawn Trilogy books, Specter of the Past, I,Jedi, the first three x-wing books and all the "tales from" books.

I remember my mom giving me these when I was younger but for one reason or another, I stashed them aside and completely forgot about them. I just finished Heir to the Empire a few days ago and I'm plowing through Dark Force Rising now.

Okay so I just realized this. In Empire Strikes Back the Falcon attaches to the back of the super structure on a Star Destroyer. Then Vader hosts the meeting of the bounty hunters on his Super Star Destroyer. After the Falcon detaches and floats off with the garbage, they enter hyperspace. Also leaving in the garbage is Boba Fett. Does this mean that Boba Fett knew where the Falcon was and transferred his ship to the Star Destroyer?

I always assumed that he had docked with the Executor, had his meeting with Vader and promptly just let his ship float out and wait.

Around the time the bounty hunters show up, Solo had been in the area recently so it wasn't a stretch that he might be nearby and just waiting for the fleet to make the jump to hyperspace. Fett guessed on this and was correct.

IMO the Empire didn't fight the Mon Cal because it didn't want them to be made a Martyr.

The Ackbars kick the Empire off the planet, and have enough ships (sleeper ships? hidden stash?) in orbit so that there would be very significant losses in re-taking the planet. I imagine the Empire's thinking went kinda like this;

Without the alliance to back them, I think the Mon Cal would have come crawling back within a few years.

This answer makes a lot of sense.

The way I always viewed it, the Empire basically acted like the later era Roman Empire in that they had a large military force and had governors and such, but weren't occupying every single territory to the brim with troops, but if they needed to suppress an uprising, they had the means to do so. Same thing with the Empire, they have a large presence but don't necessarily have to leave huge garrisons on every planet that falls under their domain.

So I just played through Dark Forces for the first time in maybe 13-14 years and you know what? Aside from the obvious graphics aging, it's aged pretty well. I miss these kinds of Star Wars games. This game had a ton going for it, and still does...

-Takes place during the Original Trilogy, at the height of the civil war, which I think most of us can agree is probably the best time period/era throughout the entire series.

-You're not a jedi(until the sequel anyways) and you're pretty much on equal terms with every enemy you come up against, except for Stormtroopers cause we all know how they aim anyways :rolleye:

-The story is multitudes better than the majority of poo poo that gets thrown around the EU universe. No Mandalorian army's, no super Jedi's wrecking havoc. Just good, old fashioned Imperial genocidal fun.

-You're not doing anything extremely unbelievable for what a character in the series could do (What's up The Force Unleashed and force crashing a loving Star Destroyer like it ain't no thing.)

-You were essentially just a cog in the greater war machine, abet a bigger one than the standard rebel soldier or stormtrooper, but still, you weren't this end all be all character and that's what made the immersion factor work, at least for me.

I loved the sequels, but they just didn't have the same bad rear end feel that the original did. The only other game I can think of that captured that essence was Republic Commando and the biggest fault I have against that game is that it takes place during the prequels and as a result, dealt with some lovely scenery. I can only imagine what Imperial Commando would have been like had it been made.

I guess what I'm getting at is, I miss the late 90's Star Wars games because they stuck to the good stuff and weren't complete poo poo. Does anyone think these kinds of games will make a return or what?

Rouge Squadron is more like Star Fox or the Ace Combat series than the X-Wing/Tie Series. It's arcadey as gently caress and basically throws everything that you learned from the sim series out the window. The best explanation I've seen that explains why I've always loved Fett's character so much and why his scenes in Empire are so great is the one given by one of the Bioware Devs when they were explaining how they were trying to mold the Bounty Hunter Class for The Old Republic.

http://www.swtor.com/news/bwblog/20090403_001

Bioware Dev posted:

Boba Fett, Dengar, Zuckuss, IG-88, Bossk, 4-LOM. This was the lineup that started it all. Darth Vader wanted something done and his own people weren’t up to the task. So he called in specialists. Seeing this motley group of outlandish characters on the bridge rankled Vader’s officers and told us these guys were the real deal. When Vader felt it necessary to specifically look at Boba Fett when he mentioned he didn’t want anyone disintegrated, we understood this was a man with a reputation. When Boba Fett objected to Han Solo being frozen on the grounds that the Bounty Hunter needed Solo alive, Vader didn’t intimidate Fett -- as he did poor Lando -- or choke him senseless. He listened and reassured him in a businesslike manner. He was talking to a professional whose work he respected.

I've always thought Fett, along with the rest of the bounty hunters were pretty cool for various reasons, and the mandalorian stuff, at least the stuff you see in KOTOR wasn't so bad. It's only after Travis and Lucas started to collectively tard things up that it really got to be so lovely.

Also, the fact Fett from Empire and before the EU really screwed things up had a sort of Man with No Name vibe going on made his character all the more cooler to me. Once again, Travis and Lucas screwed this up by not realizing you can do a far better job at character and story development by showing and not necessarily telling everything.

Shame about McQuarrie's passing. That guy certainly had arguably more talent than Jorge.

Speaking of his art, did anyone ever have or read that Illustrated Star Wars Universe? I bought it from a goon a few years ago. Kevin J. Anderson, despite all of his lovely writing, did the narrative parts for that book with McQuarrie's art. It was surprisingly really cool and added some subtle depth to the SW universe. This was of course, before the prequels.

Something is afoot at Lucasfilm...

Joystiq posted:

A strange new trademark application by Lucasfilm portends a new multimedia Star Wars franchise, including video games. The company filed for the name "Star Wars 1313" for use with video games, as well as toys, trading cards, sticker books, pencil sharpeners, online social networking services, and anything else that can possibly bear the Star Wars logo.

The document contains no indication of what "Star Wars 1313" means; we knew the series was set "a long time ago," but don't know if that translates to 700 years in Earth time. However, a quick Wookieepedia search reveals "CT-1313" as a name used by Boba Fett in a Star Wars novel. So it could be a Boba Fett-focused thing. Dengar's still waiting for his big break.

I really hope someday someone gets to make a great sequel or update to that series, but I'm doubtful it'll ever happen. Here's hoping the games show up on Gog.com at least!

I will say some, not all, but a decent amount of the comics are pretty good for EU stuff. I really like Legacy and the Rogue Squadron series was really fun to read.

As far as the books are concerned...

-X-Wing Series (can't comment on the Wraith series, I've yet to read them)
-Thrawn Series/Anything by Zahn
-Episode III Novelization
-The Han Solo Trilogy was enjoyable for me and some other people, but I might be in the minority segment for that one.

Hell, pretty much anything written before the prequels came out and doesn't have the name "Kevin J. Anderson" on the front should be a pretty decent read in comparison to post-prequel books.
