Anyone here have experience adjusting the truss rod on a Jackson(specifically a dinky from the early 00's)? It looks like it should just need a really small hex wrench but when I try turning the bolt counter clockwise to loosen it the whole bolt just twists off without turning the rod and I'm left with the bare rod. The spot is way too small to try and just jam pliers in and grab it but that sounds like a bad idea anyway. I know supposedly some truss rods only twist one direction but I have no clue if that is the case here and figured I should be sure of that before I just try cranking it accidentally way tighter.

If it's important at all I'm loosening it cause I get awful fret buzz on the lower half of the neck (gets less noticeable higher up), when I check the relief from the 1st to 12th fret the strings are just laying flat on the frets.

I think you're more correct than I was, I realized what I meant was "socket wrench" not "hex wrench" cause I'm used to calling a hex wrench an Allen wrench/key. I have a set of socket wrenches and I was able to get one that fit the nut on the end of the truss rod, but when I twisted it, instead of turning the truss rod the nut just loosened and came off of the truss rod. Maybe I broke it? Not sure.

I am also a little less frantic to get the truss rod figured out as getting the Floyd rose balance helped a lot more than I thought it would, it's not perfect now but it's less severe.

In addition to getting my old guitar back in action (it's mostly ready to go except for the 12ish year old strings I've still got on it) ive had the itch to get a bass to plink around on. I can't justify spending a lot of money since Ive never played bass before so I rolled the dice and looked around at the pawn shop by my work and boy were those instruments not in good condition.

As for the whole "talking about/spending money on fancy gear instead of actually practicing/writing" thing I have much more experience with visual art than music and that concept is not unique to one type of art. I have seen plenty of artists at the peek of technical skill who have done all their art on an entry level Wacom tablet and a laptop and also plenty of people at like just barely novice level posting reviews of their new $3k Cintiqs.

I'm mostly a bass player, and the thing I like about my bass amp is that it has two parallel preamps, one clean and one dirty. This is then controlled by a blend knob. The point is that I get a good clean actual note, combined with a ton of dirt, meaning your can hear what I'm playing even with heavy distortion. I haven't seen the same thing in guitar amps though, and it's probably more complex because at least in rock music, the guitar has a lot more effects going on.

What amp do you use? I have mostly dialed in what model I want for my first bass but still no clue about what amp. My guitar amp is a boss katana and it's cool no clue if that info informs what bass amp I would like

I want a baby little smol amp for when I don’t plug into guitar rig. What’s the least lovely one? Katana Mini? I like how cute the Marshall one is, but it seems insanely cheap

The katana mini doesn't have a huge range of effects but sounds really good for how tiny it is, got mine for like $80 open box. Only thing to keep in mind is the power adaptor comes separate, otherwise it runs on 6 AA batteries.

Given the choice, what would people consider the best user experience/value between a) Bias fx with a midi pedal thing added b) A boss gt1 and c) Some older/different multi effects processor like the line 6 pod? Use case would be practicing/recording at home, no gigging to worry about

If you can use a footswitch with the effects on it the katana might be a good idea, although I had shied away from a fender mustang specifically because using the tiny little knob and screen on the amp itself felt like might be a pain to do. How does that work exactly, can you have one preset on as like a base and slap another one onto the pedal? I really like my tiny little katana so I'm sure I'd like having a bigger one.

I only have one guitar and one bass but I've been wanting to get a second guitar cause I want one without a floating bridge or locking tuners so that I have something non fiddly laying around that I can keep in standard tuning. I was thinking an epi les Paul or a gretch electromatic, any other things I should consider if I'm trying to get that more nasally sound?

I also kind of want a telecaster cause the twang they can get is very compelling but that will probably be something much later, maybe a tax return thing next year if I don't end up having to build a new PC

Everything I have heard makes it sound like it depends on what the amp is and how loud you're blasting it, so maybe it is on a case by case basis? I kinda just assumed trying it through a decent sized/quality combo amp would be fine on low volume but if I tried playing my active bass through my tiny Boss Katana mini that I might get an unfortunate situation. I literally don't know anything so don't listen to me

I went out and tried a handful of guitars I've never played before cause my criteria for what I want to get are very the opposite of my current/past guitars and to my luck the one I liked playing most was the cheapest rear end Squier bullet telecaster in the store. I didn't just buy that one even though it was the best color (pastel turquoise) cause I like buying stuff second hand and also the knobs turned really scratchy and I wasn't sure if that was something I could fix or not. Is the affinity line tele better than the bullet line? I've heard people say the affinity teles are better than the affinity strats quality wise but I got no clue if that's true or not. Would just look for the standard line but for teles at least the vast majority I find in stores are either bullets or much more expensive fenders.

That's good to hear. I think the least frills tele will work for me cause I specifically want something with single coils, hard tail bridge and no lock in tuners. I found a really nice one for cheap on reverb that's actually at a shop in my city so I'm gonna run over there in the 2 hours they're open on Sunday and hope they still have it.

I have no idea either but it seems logical that a cheapo hardtail would be easier to live with than a cheapo trem.

Yeah I guess that makes sense, I didn't realize until I started looking for a hardtail how many guitars have trems that seem unnecessary. I'm wondering if there's anything about the string through body that'll cause unexpected problems but it seems like mostly benefits

I don't usually like warm colors on guitars but the orange one is pretty nice. Or if they had one with yellow body, white pick guard, and bright blue hardware that would be dope. Also teal and gun metal grey. Or pastel pink. If i turned into a dude with 20 guitars 12 of them would be different colors of the exact same guitar probably

I'm also thinking of trying 9's or 8's on the tele, I've never actually tried a lighter gauge than 10's but it sounds interesting and I want really bright clangy mids

What is a reasonable amount of money to offer someone on craigslist for the beat up telecaster in this listing https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/msg/d/minneapolis-fender-squire-telecaster/7098324288.html

I am into beat up looking guitars if it doesn’t make it sound/play like crap but they’re asking a similar price a local used music store would charge for a much better condition version of the same guitar. Also for some reason it bugs me more than the body damage that the knobs and switch look like they were yoinked from a strat?? Thinking of offering them $90 and either they’ll yell at me or meet me somewhere in between

I wasn’t sure what to think about the age, I had a squier strat in ‘05 and it was fine but it wasn’t an affinity and I feel like the affinities had a very not good reputation when they were new.

On the opposite side of that coin there’s this Fender Standard series tele, made in Mexico in ‘09 with a Seymour Duncan hot rails bridge pickup and a gig bag going for $400

When I was shopping for used teles there were some lefty models that were a lot cheaper than similar spec right handed versions, might have just been an opportunistic buy. Or maybe someone gave it to him?

That was one thing I liked about Nick Sadler from Daughter's, people ask him a lot what guitars and pedals he uses and his answer is usually "I got this strat for free because my friend who owned it died and these were the cheapest versions of these pedals I have no money"

I like this interview with him a lot but I'm sure a lot of people will find it pretentious
