Don't know if this question is stupid/small enough, but here it is. I was looking into various breathing techniques and their benefits, and stumbled upon this paper https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4728953/ I am not very knowledgeable on the topic, obviously, but I was stumped by its findings where breathing through different nostrils apparently had different effects on brain hemispheres. Googling, I couldn't find any explanation that wasn't more on a spiritual side (at least from what I understood), so thought I'd ask here. How can breathing through left or right nostril be different, if both are identical and lead to the same one 'tube'? The paper also mentions nasal cycles, which makes it even more confusing. How can one nostril that's dominant at different times of day still be tied to the opposite side of brain if it's about air flow? I don't doubt general benefits of breathing techniques or yoga, mind, just can't figure out this one particular alleged effect.

RPATDO_LAMD posted:From a quick search, yoga breathing / pranayama isn't just about literally breathing but also taking a specific stance and whatnot. So some of that brain stuff might be explained by different levels of muscle activation in your arms & legs due to the yoga pose and not the literal air. But I'm no expert. I was actually thinking that maybe, since subjects were students at a Yoga University, they were already more adept at the whole exercise beyond just the breathing part. But the paper cites some other studies that weren't necessarily conducted with subjects who are deeply familiar with the technique, and there are online resources that seem to recommend related breathing techniques with no mention of anything else like meditation or yoga poses. Earwicker posted:that article seems to be more about basically using it to trick your body out of "fight or flight" mode like when you are having a panic attack. like when you get nausea or dizziness or a fast heart rate from being all stressed out but there isn't like, an actual immediate danger to your life, your body is just reacting that way to the high stress, alternate nostil breathing essentially forces your body to calm down. it can be a useful thing to know about if you are susceptible to anxiety or panic attacks in certain situations, dont know what that has to with different brain hemispheres tho. I get in broad strokes why breathing techniques are helpful when dealing with anxiety and such, and I also conceptually understand how breathing through the nose and through the mouth can have different effect. From my limited experience, those techniques do help. What I still don't get is how alternating and/or breathing through just one specific nostril can have any additional physical effect.

YggiDee posted:If Jesus died on Good Friday and came back after three days wouldn't that be the Monday? In Judaism, a day actually begins in the evening, so Jews still observe the Sabbath from the Friday evening to the Saturday evening. In most pre-Christian European cultures, including Rome, on the other hand, a day started at dawn. And now that we have actual clocks, you can say it starts at midnight. So basically, Good Friday actually begins on the Thursday evening.
