I'd say it's also what you're used to, I don't live phone typing in part because I'm comparing it to using a keyboard, I could definitely see the reverse being true though, your preference as a function of what's normal.

I've only ever played at bars that had tables, so I can't speak to your specific experience, but yeah it's a fun time. Definitely a nice change of pace from a bar table at least.

I've had something similar happy twice, I'm sure this isn't the approved version of dealing with it, but it's worked for me. First disconnect the disposal or turn it off physically, essentially you don't want any chance of it turning on accidentally. Then I very carefully removed every piece I could get with my hands. It's a slow, tedious process, but I've been able to get a lot out. Then once I got literally everything I could, I turned the disposal on. I didn't cover it with anything, maybe I should have but didn't get much kick back. Mine's not super powerful though. There was some clattering but then it ran smoothly. I'm sure not the best way, I bet there's a way to open it up fully, but that's what has worked for me.

What's the hottest thing you can touch safely temperature wise, not due to the Leidenfrost effect, but rather because of the material having such a low thermal transfer rate?

Carillon
May 9, 2014

alnilam posted:

That's a pretty interesting question (not sure what the Leidenfrost effect has to do with it either)

There's a lot that goes into it though. It's also kind of a trivial question without specifying how big is the thing you're gonna touch, and how long are you gonna touch it. For example you could hold a nanogram of material that is 10,000 degrees because it has so little actual heat to offer. Or you can touch a really hot piece of ceramic without burning yourself if you touch it really really quickly, since it has a low conductivity, but if you hold your hand on it for long you will burn.

Well I was thinking how there's the physics demonstration where a teacher might dip their hand into molten lead, which wasn't what I was thinking about was all.

I hadn't really thought about the size and duration piece specifically, but that make sense. I guess decent size like a plate or pan or something, and duration wise fairly long? Not just a quick 2 second brush, but where you can actively manipulate the object.

alnilam posted:

Hmm well you could either go for a really low heat capacity, so that a pan-sized object wouldn't have all that much heat to transfer to your hand, or a really low conductivity. However in a very low conductivity situation you still need to care about heat capacity, because when you touch it, your hand would still absorb the heat from the outermost layer - that heat would just take longer to be replaced from the interior of the object due to the low conductivity. So to avoid being burned upon touching you'd still want a low heat capacity object.

Digging around the numbers a bit and sorta hand-waving a little:

Uranium and Gold have very low heat capacities by weight, but they are also really heavy so a pan made of them would have a lot of mass and therefore still hold quiet a lot of heat. Gold also has a super high conductivity. Uranium's conductivity is actually comparatively low.

Manganese has the lowest conductivity for any pure metal and a fairly middle-of-the-road heat capacity for metals. It's also fairly light iirc so a pan wouldn't have much mass.

So I'd start with manganese or uranium I guess. No biggie just drive down to bed bath and beyond and get a uranium pan.

Ceramics tend hold a lot of heat but have low conductivities. So I sorta doubt you'd be able to handle one for long because there would be so much heat to absorb from the outermost layers even if the heat from the core is not flowing out to your hand. That's a harder problem to solve though and i'm sorta talking out of my rear end here.

e: beaten, yeah hold a thermal tile instead

e2: it's unclear what's happening in that video, it seems to be still glowing red hot but he tells people to only touch it by the corners, where it's no longer glowing. He also says it's because it's "dissipating the heat so quickly." So it seems like the corners aren't actually that hot anymore (the core would be dissipating heat out of the flat sides which are closer to the core) which is maybe cheating?

Awesome, thank you both!

What makes polyrhythms different than just a straight rhythm? Like I was looking up at say 4:3 and the phrase was "what atrocious weather" and I don't know how that's different than a 5/4 time signature?

Carillon

Thanks for that insight, you can see I'm not well versed in theory at all. I guess I meant I'm not sure why if the interval is equal between each note in a polyrhythm it's different than say straight quarter notes played in a row. But I'll check out that video and see !

Edit: Whelp answered it already in that the intervals aren't equally spaced haha, thanks for that video.

Are there any resources or analysis on when it'll actually be safe to start seeing people without masks or dining indoors etc.? Like I have friends and coworkers who seem to have said gently caress it and are just essentially acting like there's no pandemic. Plus a lot of jurisdictions seem to be more focused on the chamber of commerce than public health. As an individual are there any good guides to make sure I'm making good choices here?

Mate, I don’t think anyone can give you an answer on that one. The pandemic will last as long as it lasts and there’s a huge amount of variables factoring into when it’s ‘over’ and safety measures are no longer required.
Unless you live in a country that has eliminated community spread and/or has a robust system to find and deal with cases as they pop up, then, no, keep on wearing your mask and avoiding indoor spaces as much as possible.
This pandemic is not over yet by a long shot. The good choice is to make choices based on the fact that we are living through a pandemic of a contagious airborne disease.

No I really appreciate that, but it's like what should I be looking for to know it's over? A rate of infection below x? 0 cases over x days or weeks? I just realized I don't have any idea of what over night look like locally and many people I know who I might look to seem to be treating it as a done deal, which lol.

Our 14-day moving average of new cases is around 9.7, and we've been told that going to the next stage (being able to socialise with one nominated household, groups of ten people in outdoor settings, outdoor seating at restaurants with 25% capacity maximum) is dependent on having a that average be less than 5. Regardless of that, we have a face mask mandate that requires anyone over the age of 12 leaving the house to wear a mask at all times, scarves and neck gaiters don't count, and fines of $200 for not wearing a mask and fines ranging from $4,957 to $20,000 for breaching the regulations.

Having a government that has a plan is the key thing here.

And 1800 cases a day.

Not even kidding I'm really happy there's a coordinated push for public health, here in the states there's very much less of that. I guess it's just the disconnect between seeing other places actually reinforce the public nature of public health and then seeing people I know bragging about flying or going to bars that gets to me and unfortunately rouses a sense that maybe by still bring careful I'm doing it wrong.
