I'm sure it means they pick it up around 5. My anecdotal evidence for this is that I used to regularly shove my Netflix in the mail at 5 or even 5 after, and I always received notification the next day that it got there.

When I am on Skype, I often get messaged by young Algerian men (even when I'm in invisible mode). I don't mind talking to strangers, but I'm just curious as to why they're almost always Algerian. Is everyone on Skype Algerian? Does this happen to other people or only me?

I'm looking for clarification on when copyrighted material enters the public domain. According to Wikipedia, works published before 1923 are all in the public domain (right?), but works published between 1923 and 1963 are all copyrighted for a term of 95 years. Does this mean essentially that there will be no new (originally copyrighted) works in the public domain until 2018? When did the pre-1923 copyrights expire?

"Muslim" more accurately represents the Arabic pronunciation (مُسلِم), even though most people incorrectly pronounce the "s" as a "z" sound. Just as "Qur'an" is the new trendier spelling of the old "Koran", though in practice native English-speakers don't pronounce the two any differently.

I have a friend who applied to the Diversity Visa Lottery, but he just discovered that the spelling of his first name that he normally uses and that he used on the application is slightly different from the spelling on his birth certificate (his name is written in both Arabic and French on his birth certificate) and therefore on his passport. The spelling variation is very slight, on the level of "Mohamed" vs. "Mohammed". Is that enough to get him disqualified if he happens to be selected? I really, really hope not. :ohdear:

Some restaurants in Muslim countries (and even in Western countries) have a section for men and then a section for "families" (i.e. women). Some women who wear niqab might feel comfortable enough to eat there (depending on whether men are present or not), but I imagine they don't eat out too much.

During Ramadan how would a person fast if they were living in a place with 24 hour sunlight? Or if they were on a plane and they left in the morning and arrived somewhere in the morning?

Would they go off the sunrise/sunset of a holy site or something and follow that?

This is what I have read, though I have never known any Muslim who lives in a place like that:

quote:

They can set the time for their fast and determine the beginning and end of Ramadaan and the times of starting and breaking the fast each day by the dawn and sunset each day in the closest country in which night can be distinguished from day.

Source: Islam Q-A: How to pray and fast in countries where the day or night is continuous

In practice I don't know how this works. If you live in a place where there is a clear separation between night and day, but night is only an hour or two, fasting is pretty much impossible and probably unhealthy. On the other hand:

quote:

Whoever is unable to complete the fast because the day is so long, or who knows from experience or from the advice of a competent. trustworthy doctor, or thinks it most likely that fasting will lead to his death or make him severely ill, or will make his sickness worse or impede his recovery, may break his fast and make up the days that he misses in a month when he can make them up.

The answer to your second question, about traveling during Ramadan, is simply that fasting is not obligatory when one is traveling, even by plane. Some people do it anyway, and they go by the sunrise and sunset based on where they are at the time.

Amazon US usually doesn't have much, and when it does its usually way overpriced. You can't of course just order from other country's Amazon sites. Places like abebooks are ok, but selection is spotty and some times its a crapshoot on price.

Have you tried ordering from Amazon.fr? I've never had any problem doing that.

Also fnac.com, or Amazon.ca.

Either way, you're going to have to pay for shipping, and that's going to be expensive. I have ordered books from Amazon.fr and they tend to cost just as much with shipping as the same book on Amazon.com with free shipping.

I was really curious, so I looked into it more. The world's northernmost mosque, Alnor Senter in Tromsø, Norway, recommends following a fatwa given by Saudi Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz Almosleh, which says:

quote:

Some said: It can be estimated equally by making the night twelve hours and the day twelve hours because this is the case in the normal time in the normal place.

Others said: It can be estimated according to their duration in Mecca and Madina because these are the places where the WAHY (The angel Jibril) was revealed. So the day and night can be estimated as it is known there (in Mecca and Madina) if there was no known day and night special for that country.

Others said: It can be estimated according to the closest place where there is a consequence of a day and a night within twenty four hours.

What I see is that Muslims in these countries should select among these opinions what suits their conditions because every opinion has its own evidence, reasoning, and clue. And you who live in those countries know the option which fits you and enables you to perform fasting in a way it becomes easier for Muslims there, and there is nothing against you as long as you follow one of the opinions used and well known by the people of knowledge (scholars) and Allah knows best and from Him we ask guidance and upon Him we depend.

Here is an article about this subject on Slate that concluded that there is probably no significant difference. It probably depends on a number of factors including how efficient your washing machine is and if you're using a dryer or a clothesline. My mom was rooting around the other day in my grandma's attic, and found a human skull from my grandpa's old medical practice (he died over 30 years ago). It was obviously used for research or education since it has numbers written in pencil all over it and it's filled with concrete. Anyway, the skull is not in great condition. It's missing its jaw and teeth, so none of the doctor or dentist friends of my parents are willing to take it. What's the best legal and preferably free way to get rid of it? It seems like it would be most respectful to just bury it, but I can't imagine that's legal or a good idea.

How far do FM signals travel?

I use an FM radio transmitter to listen to my iPod in the car (yeah, I know there are better options out there but I just haven't gotten around to it). This morning the blank radio station I usually set my radio on wasn't blank, but was instead a radio station from 150 miles away (straight distance, not driving distance). What's up with this?

Lots of factors affect FM signal strength; transmitter power, power and "nearness" of other signals close to that band, topography, weather, etc., but if this is the first time this has happened in that location it might have been a lucky bit of cloud cover.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_and_FM_DX#Sporadic_E_propagation_.28E-skip.29

Otherwise, you can look up the station here to see if buildings or natural features funnel the signal an unusual way.

http://radio-locator.com/

Edit: In inaccurate layman terms, signals travel both in a "line of sight" way and by reflection. Clouds and atmospheric conditions can reflect the signals surprising distances sometimes, or limit them immensely.

Edit 2: If you are really curious, I work at a broadcaster's association and can ask one of our engineers, but this type of thing, while not common, is not exactly uncommon either. They could have also gotten an FM translator, which is just a signal repeater that increases their broadcast range while staying in line with FCC regulations. These require their own license.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_relay_station#Radio_2

It must have been the atmospheric conditions, because I got nothing on my way home from work. Thanks for the info.

Aside from the government's website, are there any good sources of information for the process? A google search brings up websites for law offices.

I think (though I'm not 100% sure) that if you get married before her visa is up, then you can just file an I-130 Petition for an Alien Relative form. If you plan to wait to get married until after her visa expires, then I think she will need a K-1 visa, and I'm not sure if you can use an I-539 Application To Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status to change her visa to a K1 or if she'll have to return to her home country and start the very extremely tiresome process from scratch with an I-129F Petition for Alien Fiancé(e) form. If it turns out that she has to go back home to get the K1 visa (and keep in mind I don't know this for sure), you're better off just marrying in a hurry and then filing an I-130. I'm working on getting a K1 visa for my fiance now and it's a bitch, let me tell you. A huge hassle and up to 9 months (or more?) of waiting.
