3) Transitions: Anyone with experience with these? It'd probably be cheaper to get one pair of Transitions than glasses + sunglasses, but I have no clue how good they are, if the vision quality is less, how fast they transition, etc. HowStuffWorks says, "An important note about photochromic lenses: because they react to UV light and not to visible light, there are circumstances under which the darkening will not occur. A perfect example of this is in your car." If they aren't going to properly transition in my car, then they're completely worthless. Am I being paranoid?

Get contacts. I spent years dealing with glasses because I didn't want to deal with hard contacts and I finally broke down and got some a few years ago. Best decision I ever made. They aren't cheap, but they've saved me a ton of money on sunglasses. It's so nice not having to worry about losing or scratching a pair of $300 prescription sunglasses because now I have 5 pairs of $5 Wal-Mart ones in the glovebox.

Tell me about contact lenses, please. I've never considered them - figured I'd be allergic, or it was too much hassle. Is there any reason not to try them out?

This may not apply to soft lenses since I've never worn them, but be sure to give it some time. When I first got my hard contacts I could only deal with them for about 4 hours at a time. After a couple weeks I could wear them all day but they were still sort of annoying. Eventually I just totally forgot I was wearing them, to the point that the only way I can tell whether I have them in now is that I'm not blind as poo poo when they're in.

It also takes a while to get used to sticking things in your eyes. Took me maybe six months to get really good at it, but now I can put them in or take them out like a pro even when I'm half asleep or completely hammered. It has also had the added bonus of making me a lot less uncomfortable at the eye doctor since my eyes are a lot less sensitive now.

How permanent marker and regular whiteboard marker mix? A friend of mine said that for some reason whiteboard markers may remove permanent marker. Is he right or can my plan succeed?

E: also, what's the difference between laminate whiteboard and a enamel whiteboard in terms of performance?
Just in case this hasn't been answered enough times yet.

Consider using whiteboard paint. That way you don't even need to worry about marking whiteboard or sticking things to things. You just mask off your grid with some painter's tape and then cover the surface in whiteboard paint. When you're done you should have a bunch of neat little squares of whiteboard with the backing material showing through as the grid. You can also make it whatever size and shape you want.

Luckily it's not that critical if the measurements aren't completely accurate.

Thanks a ton!

Heh, now I just have to find out what whiteboard paints are called in Finnish... that'll have to wait until tomorrow.

In the US it's sold as "Rust-Oleum 241140 - Dry Erase" Be sure to follow all the instructions in regards to priming and what kinds of surfaces it works best on. If you really want to have fun, hit your surface with a coat of magnetic primer first and you'll be able to stick pieces to your new playing board with magnets.

Remember that paint is going to adhere best to a clean, dry, and rough/abraded surface. So if whatever base material you're using is smooth and shiny hit it with some sandpaper and then clean it up real good before you prime.

She's on the hook for the bill, not you. Don't forward that letter anywhere. Just call up the people who sent it and tell them that person doesn't live at your address. That's it.

It is generally good policy to get an identifier etched on anything you own worth stealing. A lot of police departments will do it for free, if not it isn't difficult or expensive to do it yourself. The vast majority of legal businesses that deal in second hand goods will actually read the "recently stolen poo poo" report the cops send them and make an effort to turn it in. Mostly because making a few bucks off some old speakers isn't worth the risk of losing their operating license. (Especially if they trade in guns. The ATF will seriously gently caress up their day over stolen goods)

Get a couple of box fans for your windows on that side and point them so they blow air out. This only works if you have a window on another side where fresh air can come in though.

I want a pair of glasses that will actually last a couple of years and that will look decent on me. One idea I had is to get the eye exam someplace cheap (like for instance the Eye Care place in Walmart) and then go "shopping" at a bunch of stores to look at frames and compare prices. Can you do that though? I don't know whether Walmart would release my prescription to anyone else, and I don't want to buy Walmart frames at all.

Get your eye exam done wherever it's cheap and ask for your prescription. Then just buy the lenses and frames online. There used to be an SAmart thread for a place that was good and crazy cheap. I'm sure someone with archives can dig it up.

Edit: And a second corollary: I know it's gravity that keeps us down, but how much is contributed by the weight of the atmosphere? That is to say, if there were no atmosphere at all, would I be able to jump any higher? I've never heard that the acceleration caused by gravity (9.8m/s^2) is affected by atmospheric pressure, so we'd still fall back down at the same rate, right?

Air pressure doesn't just push you down, it pushes you in every direction at once. Essentially it's all pushing "in" trying to squish you from all sides. But since our bodies are pressurized to the same approximately 1 atmosphere, the net force is zero. Acceleration caused by gravity is always the same (on Earth) but the density of the medium you're falling through certainly does effect the speed at which you fall. Because air is compressible (unlike water) density and pressure increase together. If you fell through a hypothetical atmosphere that constantly increased in density and pressure you'd eventually just stop falling when you hit a point at which you were buoyant in the medium.
