I wish some of our channels could be more up front about what American programmes they're showing - In particular I want to know when Sky One (they have exclusive rights to HBO programming, right?) is going to show Boardwalk Empire.

I don't think Sky One do have exclusive rights, unless they got them very recently. Channel 4 shows the Ricky Gervais Show and True Blood, More 4 shows Curb Your Enthusiasm, ITV 2 shows Entourage, and there are a bunch of other HBO shows spread about the channels.

Yeah it was announced in July: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/jul/29/bskyb-buys-hbo-tv-catalogue

I'm for it in theory, as long as it stops things like Five's treatment of Breaking Bad and 30 Rock, not to mention the fate of several shows on ITV.

(I know Breaking Bad and 30 Rock aren't HBO, but my point still stands)

Channel Five can't be trusted with good TV shows. It seems to put them on at stupid times, and not advertise them. BBC did that with Arrested Development as well, showing it at 00:30 in the morning.

Sky buying HBO could be good, as in theory it will replace the sub-ITV drivel that they normally show with top quality American drama and comedy. HBO and Karl Pilkington might make Sky actually watchable.

They both have intolerably smug expression whilst sitting to the left of Simon Cowell. Cowell surrounds himself with preening cunts in order to vaguely resemble a human person.

Louis is a smug tool, but he can be quite funny, and he seems like a relatively nice person. Piers is disgusting though. He's like a parody of smug British people. Everything he says is either sucking up to bigger celebrities, or bigging up Piers himself. All the hate towards Piers Morgan on comedy shows is completely justified.

Only made it a few minutes in before I wanted to kill myself.

Robert Webb, Simon Webb was in the boyband Blue. You're right about the show though, it was really shoddy. I watched it for 10 minutes and got bored, then saw it had a running time of nearly 2 hours. God only knows how they stretched that out.

Psychoville is back for a Halloween special. I cannot wait! The cliffhanger ending of series 1 was brilliant, and the trailer looks pretty scary. David looked to be absent from the trailer, but I assume he will be back as he was the only major character other than the two dwarves to not be in the hospital during the explosion.

Seinfeld ran from 1990-1998, so your "currently in vogue" comment doesn't really work unless you think comedy moves at a glacial pace.

For its time, Seinfeld was absolutely as unique as Black Books. It was the work of two people, not a "mass-producing formula". If it appears that way now, it's because it's the most influential sitcom ever so we have become completely familiar with its style.

Curb is even more unique, more so than Black Books, which was incredibly well written but pretty familiar in its sitcom style.

I dunno I just get the impression a lot of people haven't even watched these shows properly before dismissing them.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny

I think it's a case of this. Seinfeld seems old and boring now because all the good comedies mimic it. For its time, Seinfeld was an incredibly new concept, and without it there'd be no The Office or shows of a similar ilk.

I don't watch Hollyoaks, but sometimes it gets left on while I'm doing stuff, and the episode that's just finishing now is actually not completely poo poo. Except for the cheesy, unnecessary flashback-voiceover just now.

I turn it on occasionally to see how far the writers can go when changing a character. For example, the nice Geordie teacher suddenly turned into a violent racist who wanted to stop an interracial marriage, in a transition that was literally overnight. Loretta turned from a nice former stripper who wants to leave her past behind and fall in love, to being a possessive psychopath, all in the course of a week.

A nice example of original writing is the man who arrived in Hollyoaks, claimed he was an alien, and got Elliot a job at NASA.

But it is impressive how many different styles they use for the opening scenes. It's a shame the show turns into a clusterfuck after 40 seconds.

The end is actually rather sweet. I've seen every Raymond episode like 3 times as it was always on before school, and it is pretty poor, but the ending is nice. Ray has to have a routine operation, and the family are all joking about it, but then the doctor comes out and says Ray won't wake from the anaesthetic. 30 seconds later he comes out of it just fine, but the reactions of the family when they think there's a problem are really moving. Robert panics and tries to go see his brother, Deborah starts breaking down, and Frank shows emotion too. The very final scene is the entire family enjoying a normal meal together without arguing, and it fades to black. One of the better sitcom endings, even though the show is normally poo poo.

Not as bad as According To Jim which they're now showing in Raymond's timeslot.

Hi Mark. Just saw this. Amused to see moral grandstanding from a notorious sellout. You are commenting on a joke you didn’t see, and don’t quote, so presumably you don’t even know what it was? Amazing. I’d hate for you to pass through life with no self awareness, so let me point something out. You built up a certain indie credibility over the years with your standup. You then sold that credibility to sell cider. Why don’t you leave the discussions of jokes to people who have heard them and stick to pushing booze on teenagers? In a country of alcoholics.

I don't have a problem with someone calling out Mark Watson for advertising cider. It's obviously easy to be snide here in the peanut gallery but I really do get annoyed with people who definitely can make a comfortable living in the first place then decide to become the face of some product.

That said Frankie Boyle can go gently caress himself. He oscillates between moral grandstanding (ranting about how no comedian should be going after 40, or slagging off people for selling out) and doing the laziest, most unpalatable jokes picking on weak groups like the disabled. gently caress him.

I think my main problem with him calling Mark Watson out for being a sellout is that Frankie Boyle writes a column for The Sun, the best selling paper in the UK and part of Rupert Murdoch's empire. He can't criticise someone for selling out to promote cider, when Boyle himself works for one of the biggest media corporations in the world.

Using your logic, shops shouldn't sell any food or drinks, as people are capable of consuming too much of a product. A single fast food meal won't kill someone, but three meals a day seven days a week for an extended period likely will. It's not the product that's the issue, so it's not the owner's problem.
