I've gotten into this series recently and have blown through all the DS titles and since they were having a big sale seemingly in the Japanese eshop I also picked up Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy. I was resistant to it for a long time but I picked it up because I wanted to try some Layton before I played Layton vs. Phoenix Wright (which is also amazing) and I wish I'd done so sooner.

I'm only a little way into Miracle Mask but so far Unwound Future was my favorite by far. The ending was real sad though.

I played through the first case of Layton Brothers and its pretty fun. It's like a really condensed Ace Attorney Investigations. You have a singular crime scene and a list of suspects, a five minute initial investigation, then you deduce the culprit through testimony, analysis, and further investigation.

I played through all the free content and I'll probably buy more tomorrow. I almost feel like the game is too much "on rails" but that could just be my imagination. It's still decent.

By the way, I finished Layton and the Azran Legacy and it was GREAT. I'd rate is as my second-favorite, behind Unwound Future.

Also, a caveat to anyone playing Layton Brothers. What you think is a localization error is actually a character just being super cockney. They went all out on the cockney in this localization.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I kept seeing "were" but I caught onto what was going on when they started saying "nowt" and "What's all this then?" and so on.

I can't believe how incredibly lame the ending to Layton Brothers was. And also how little they actually did to tie it in with the real Layton games at all.

I've been digging Layton Brothers as a little phone diversion. Yeah, it's not exactly Layton as I know it. But I'm having decent fun with it.
Only finished case 4, so still a bit to see. $5 doesn't seem bad at all for it.

It's totally worth playing. But the Layton tie-in seems especially cynical because there's really nothing in common except a couple token mentions of "my dad, Hershel Layton."

The whole Layton thing is literally tacked on, as the game wasn't originally linked to Layton. It actually kinda turned me off the game when it was announced, because 1. It seems unlikely that Layton would get over the events of Unwound Future and get all married, and 2. The fact that it starred Layton's son felt fanficton as gently caress.

Yeah, the tone was also distinctly un-Layton, in my opinion. I mean, other games have had the protagonists changed after they were already in progress and not felt so utterly tacked-on... Kirby's Epic Yarn is definitely Kirby, even if it didn't start out that way.

I'd certainly like to see more iOS games like it... it's one of the few genres where mobile isn't a compromise.

Along with news that we're getting Layton 6 (Azran Legacy) next year.

Today was a good day!

Azran Legacy was great. Miracle Mask was so disappointing I was worried the series was running out of steam but that wasn't the case.

Miracle Mask is the first Layton game I haven't bothered to finish. It's so wrapped up in telling its story that the actual puzzles seem to have been forgotten; there were long periods of wandering around and talking to people without being offered a single puzzle to solve.

I'm pretty invested in the Layton story at this point so that doesn't even bother me but the story was not very good. And I found the ending really distasteful. Like I'm supposed to find it inspiring that this dude gave up like his entire life for the boy to whom he was a servant because one time he gave him a teddy bear. Come on man.

Unwound Future is just the apotheosis of the series in every regard.

Well it does, in the sense that it ends with the beginning of Curious Village. But it doesn't actually even spoil anything about that game, let alone Unwound Future.

But yeah Unwound Future is still my favorite one of the series and is well worth finishing someday.

Unwound Future is the best, but Azran Legacy is, in my opinion, in second place.

Layton vs Wright is the best Layton game :colbert:

Azran Legacy really suffers because of the branching paths in the middle. All of those side quests were lovely. Oh, we're going to interrupt the series-ending plot so you can figure out why the chief of this village of racist caricatures is grumpy. Turns out it's because he wants to hear a joke! Hurpa durpa

It's good but I got a little sick of witch stuff in like case 3 (although the ending was exciting). Basically it has the typical Phoenix Wright thing where the middle is kind of dull and you almost quit playing (or do quit playing for months before you pick it up again).

Anyway, I can take or leave the branching. I don't know what reason you'd have to change the order around. Maybe my reaction was colored by the fact that Miracle Mask was, IMO, the worst one.

I found the circus stuff tedious too. But I got the plus version for like 2500 yen or something in a promotion so it wasn't awful.

Actually I think I did notice that, but it's been a little while since I played it so I can't remember a lot about Layton vs. Phoenix.

I must say, while it was a thrill to see Layton exclaim "Objection!" and do Phoenix's legendary finger-pointing pose, the game overall fell kind of flat to me. I was hoping for a little more crossover (e.g. the puzzles toward the end of the final trial were a nice mixture of the two games) - it mostly felt more like the two game formats condensed down to fit into the space of a single game. Eh, don't get me wrong: it was still really enjoyable. I think I just expecting a little more.

I played it quite some time ago now but I remember thinking it was good because it replaced the investigation, generally the least intersting part of AA games, with something better.

Yeah, it doesn't help when the chapters are segmented in such a clear way too. You're in Layton mode now, then you're in Wright, now back to Layton.

The whole game feels like a giant slog so far though. I'm just on chapter 4 and it's taken me about 2 months of on/off playing just to get this far because the story is just so.... meh.

None of the characters outside of the main cast are compelling in any way, it also doesn't help that all of the Wright sections so far have progressed through insane leaps of unintuitive logic. This is exacerbated by the whole schtick being "it's magic" so every logical leap you make to progress the plot is met with the "nah, that's dumb cos it's magic, all the testimonies have now just changed 100%". That was maybe interesting for the first case, but it's now happening again and it's really loving grating. There's only so much "magical ignorance" that i can take as part of a story when every single action i do i denounced by it.

Like every AA game the middle is the weakest part... it's worth finishing.

In spite of the baffling lovely ending to Ace Attorney Vs. Layton; the game's made me really like Professor Layton as a character. Can I watch the Eternal Diva without spoiling the previous games?

If you thought that was baffling and lovely you probably won't like Layton games... they mostly have those kind of Scooby Doo plots at the end.
