This looks like a long time ago obviously. Was the court worried about Omega dying, so they transferred her soul into a robot or computer? And they had regular missions (Tony's trip) to ensure that computer was still accurate?

And now, not only has Omega potentially been transferred back into a body, but it's a body with autonomy in a world where Kat/Annie have made things exciting and unpredictable to her.

I do feel she is tied to Zimmy in some way beyond the death prediction.

Yeah, I think it's safe to assume she's directly related to Zimmy. I don't think we've seen too many humans with those red eyes.

The actual pacing seems to be much better in the past few pages (say what you will about the way Robot and the Cult's reveal were handled, at least it wasn't meandering and tripping over itself), so I wonder if the weird pacing in the Zimmy-Loup-Coyote-verse was just Tom knowing he wanted to get from point A to point C, but had no idea where to go when it came to point B.

say hello to my little friend

Yeah so far this has been well drawn, written, and intriguing. It's dampened by the knowledge of everything before it - that is to say, it's a bit "okay, when is the shoe of something horribly disappointing and tedious going to drop" - but it's definitely giving vibes of something he's had in mind and polished for a long time.

My current theory is that Omega is a woman who, due to some unknown anomaly, is constantly beset with visions of the future but they are debilitating and/or constant to the point of being barely able to move, projecting her consciousness into other things via the ether in order to speak. Something you might call a prophet. Something not too far from Zimmy without a Gamma, in that she's constantly haunted and hosed up with no reprieve.

They take her to the Court, alleviate this pressure through experiments, which is why she's seen here able to speak and move and open her eyes a bit. The court, of course, figures out how to harness her powers for predictions. At some point she gives birth to a child named Zeta (Zimmy) with different powers.

The court also perhaps keeps her trapped in its walls forcing her to make predictions for them and increasingly refines this process. Or maybe it's voluntary? Who knows but she sure seemed happy to be bouncing around and free. One way or another she is the "omega device".

It's notable that this seems to be happening centuries ago, but Zimmy has been shown to not really be aging next to Gamma. So, maybe Omega is still alive from this time period as a result of her anomalous properties. Or maybe they GlaDOS'd her or otherwise extended her life artificially.

It would just be extremely funny and on brand for the court to have a sophisticated Device capable of hyper specific predictions and everyone assumes it's this all powerful machine they're using to transcend humanity but it's actually just a loving old fortune teller lady

Randalor
Sep 4, 2011

I'm going to guess either she's eternally long-lived, or the court pulled a "Brain in a jar" on her after she died to keep using her prediction powers, and when the Court decided to bail, they left her behind because she would be useless without the ether. Either Zimmy's a direct descendent of hers, or the Court started experimenting with cloning her when the Tictoc birds appeared and her powers started to "fail" (and it turns out that her powers always worked, but she figured out a way to get her freedom and be rid of the Court by playing the long-con).

isasphere

Yeah, we know that the Court made artificial bodies, right, they just needed a soul.

dragon enthusiast
Jan 1, 2010
at some point in the distant past the court took in omega, the person

they turned her into a robot so she could keep serving the court after her human body passed away

then more recently kat turned her into a numan, which explains why she can talk now when her original form was nonvocal

c) she dies tragically and he selfishly tries to keep her alive as a machine

Randalor
Sep 4, 2011

I vote for D, absolutely nothing sinister happens, she loved a long and fruitful life working in the employment of the Court, and Coyote/Loup/Zimmyverse is the first time she can get out of the ether-barriered area without immediately being overwhelmed. It's so benign no one would see it coming!

bartolimu
Nov 25, 2002

She's the Seed Bismuth. The Court is constantly trying to escape the ether because it disrupts her ability to create a larger world. Once she goes across the star ocean, this Court will cease to exist (nobody will remember it existed in the first place) and she'll be able to freely create a whole new world for the science people. Annie and Kat, having forgotten everyone they've ever known because they all went across the star ocean, will blink, stare at each other, and wonder how they got into the middle of this big forest.

The end, no moral.

This is good but would have hit better if... OK at this point the number of things I could list here are quite large but in general this would have worked better if it had been interspersed between different chapters or otherwise had more of a leadup. I really liked the stone, and yes I read it live, but "what's up with Jones" was a question I wanted answered. Omega was solidly in the "handwaved maguffin" category.

Like, if she'd been the seed bismuth I'd be hype as hell.

I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.
this would be genuinely a great reveal if we hadn't already been told what omega was by annie (who learned about it offscreen).

edit: seriously, imagine if "the omega project" was still the huge mystery that it was earlier in the comic, and then this girl shows up and says "i'm omega" and then we get this. loving mind blown, 10/10. instead it's a wet fart

Eh, it's showing how Omega convinced the Court she was more than an everyday clairvoyant in a world full of them, any big twists or reveals won't come until later on.

This 100%. Imagine if one of the biggest mysteries of the comic was slowly revealed like this, The Stone Jones style, instead of Annie going "oh yeah that was explained to me by my dad offscreen, nbd." This chapter is a return to form in a lot of ways, but it's spoilt by there being several chapters so far that were just characters explaining the mysteries of the comic over drinks or having it be solved in distortion zone metaphor world for fast wrappings-up.

Imagine if we’d started getting these short three-page stories in between chapters right around the time we heard the name ‘Omega’ - but ideally with Zimmy involved as well so we don’t immediately go “Omega is the girl.” Plus no description of Omega’s nature.

It could have been so good.

Yeah that's kinda the feeling I'm getting here too, it's not a surprise twist reveal, it's just... Standard backstory. It's presented like we should be shocked by something, when I just have no reaction at all.

I guess maybe some big reveal is coming? No idea. I'm betting on Zimmy being, like, her twin sister, or daughter, or some part of her that was extracted and given form (seeing as her/the crows eyes are red until this page).

This had potential to get the Jeanne treatment, and to be honest this chapter is giving a bit of that same feeling. It's definitely a bit hard to reconcile it with the last several chapters, and I feel like most of that feeling comes from ignoring these constant threat escalations. I'm holding out hope because standalone this chapter has good art, decent pacing, and is unraveling early court history.

I'm curious about how this will relate to Zimmy later, assuming that we ever see her again since she's been dog-nuked four chapters ago.

There's something just... off with her face in the last panel. While I'm enjoying the chapter so far and hoping that the Zimmyverse parts were just Tom trying to figure out how to get to Robot/Omega's reveal, I'm worried we may run into more rough patches before the comic ends.

Yeah chap is good so far but I do not have enough faith left to be confident it'll hold up. This is coming off as a section Tom has been planning and looking forward to for quite some time, and I'm guessing that once it's done we'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming.
