Because we do need more variation in non-coyote, non-gillitie avatars, and because I am a sperglord, I've been going through the comic from the start and trying to crop at least one avatar from each page. All are up for grabs, as far as I know.

I've added another three chapters' worth of material to the Gunnerkrigg Court (No) Spare Avatars Cupboard, which can now be found here in a handy dandy imgur gallery.

^^ Ahhh, beaten.

For the uninitiated, Princess Mononoke is an environmentalist fable. It pits the animal gods of the forest and the titular feral girl against a (surprisingly not straw-manned) industrially expanding human settlement.

Moro, pictured here, is the wolf god and San/Mononoke's adoptive mother. I won't spoil anything, but she's a very badass figure in the film.

Honestly, Princess Mononoke is a very safe recommendation for anyone who enjoys the major themes of Gunnerkrigg Court. And anyone else. But I don't know why anyone else would be in this thread.

Pretty sure that's caused by independent sellers running bots that aggregate supply/price data on their stock from various places online and generate high-profit listings. It works fine as long as the item's had a large enough print run to make second-hand prices match demand, but for smaller runs there's so little data that the figures get really out of whack. You see it a hell of a lot on Amazon, and the giveaway is always when there are two or more generic sellers offering the same ludicrous price with 0.01c difference where they automatically undercut each other.

Dragon's Lair is one of the least offensive comic book shops on the planet. This says a lot about Dragon's Lair, and it says a lot about how poor comic book shops can be.

My local comic book shop is run by a sleepy stoner who plays WoW all afternoon and likes to talk about books. It's down a little medieval side-lane and being the UK there are absolutely no concessions made to try and persuade customers to hang around or socialise, so it always has that quiet library feeling. It also has grilled windows and no sign, so the only people who ever go there are either lost tourists or locals inducted by comic-reading friends. I'd been dropping in there for something like six years before I even learned it had a name. :3: I have no idea how it survives.

Can we run a kickstarter campaign to buy Tom a Nice Cup of Tea? I don't know how the comforting beverage market is down south, but I estimate that £1.20 would be a realistic goal. If we made it up to £1.70 maybe he could get a biscuit too!

Realtalk: I suspect your discomfort with the writing of that chapter communicated to the audience, plain and simple. The robots and the shady history of the court have both been popular/interesting focuses for the plot before, and we were ready for a bit of Kat time after Annie's summer, so it's not like it was intrinsically dull subject matter. Funny that you feel robot chapters limit visual interest, too, because a lot of my favourite imagery from the comic comes from the way you work with the tension between the court's very human elements and its industrial appearance. Just got to try not to let your anxieties have a bigger say than your imagination in the way your story comes out. [/amateur opinion]

Well I didn't go to every school in the UK, but I did go to three different ones and they all worked the same. And everyone I've talked to had a similar structure in the shools they went to. I'd be interested in knowing which kinds of schools didn't organise their students into different groups.

I did find this Wikipedia article and it says:

"The house system is a traditional feature of British schools, and schools in ex-British colonies. Historically it was associated with established public schools, where a 'house' refers to a boarding house or dormitory of a boarding school. In the case of a day school, however, the word 'house' refers only to a grouping of pupils, rather than to a particular building. The house system has been common in the state sector for many years."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_system

I'm not sure how it could have been seen as a gag or in-joke, but I changed the wording from "all" to "many", and hopefully this is less offensive.

There's a typo on that page, too, in the last instance of 'boarding school' at the end.

I only remembered at this moment that we did actually have a house structure at my high school (in Scotland). It didn't affect anything except the occasional sports day and our class designations, as far as I remember, and I always assumed it was just a token effort to make the place look like less of a scumhole. :britain: Warriston house.

Yeah, it's actually been bugging me a little bit how much Annie looks like Surma in certain panels more recently. I know it's probably really tough to get that whole gradual growing thing, but she's 14 (right?) and is looking really similar to her mother already.

Surma always looked pretty youthful, and remember a lot of what we've seen of her has been in flashback form - when she'd have been only a little older than Annie is now. Besides that, women often reach physical adulthood earlier than men. I was being regularly mistaken for my mother by her family / old college friends by the time I was 16, much to my irritation at the time.

For anybody who missed it on Twitter, Tom is back on Formspring, and it seems to be running on marginally less insanity for the time being. Reynard body-swapping questions are still verboten, as are attempts to wring out plot spoilers.

I found this question and response pretty interesting:

quote:

This isn't just a complement, but you draw really well, you write a good story and you're very dedicated to your work. Do you think you could start one of those Kickstarter things to get a years income so you can do this full time?

I've thought about doing that, but I'm not sure if people would look too kindly on something like that. It might seem a little tacky if I didn't have a proper project behind it.

First of all, I've seen tacky projects on Kickstarter and oh boy this would not even come close. But beyond that, it's an interesting idea. I wonder if there's a way Tom could use the 'rewards' element of Kickstarter to set up the equivalent of a very well paying run of sales and commissions and achieve the same result. I know I wouldn't mind paying well over the odds for - say - a badge and a thank you note, if the goal was helping to launch Gunnerkrigg to the next level.

Yeah, sneaking out was 99% of the point. And then everyone would turn up and hang out semi-awkwardly as it dawned on us that we didn't really know what the other 1% was. Sometimes it was booze or drugs, sometimes really bad under-18s nightclubs. Usually it was just sitting somewhere and talking inconsequentially. The only difference is that I guess we used to hang out in parks and at bus stops, rather than hotel lounges or wherever these strangely classy teens are.

True story: I was sitting drawing in my front room a couple of weeks ago when my sister came in, stopped dead and gave me the biggest :stare: face.
