Nandroid is a part of your recovery. The stock recovery doesn't have any backup utilities but nandroid is included in both clockwork and sprecovery.

from what I understand though when a phone is replaced through insurance you receive all new stuff so you could actually make out by getting a new battery and sdcard. You do pay the deductible though.
