Nandroid is a part of your recovery. The stock recovery doesn't have any backup utilities but nandroid is included in both clockwork and sprecovery.

When you replace your phone through warranty, its not uncommon they make you keep your sd card, battery, and backplate.

from what I understand though when a phone is replaced through insurance you receive all new stuff so you could actually make out by getting a new battery and sdcard. You do pay the deductible though.
