Four new songs of dark country-inflected powerpop.

edit: Holy poo poo, that's some horrible MP3 compression - this stuff sounded great when I uploaded it and it's this awful dull warbly mess now. I'm new to soundcloud - does anyone have any tips on getting better sound quality?

hey, curbcheck! ed norton sucks!
Does anyone take part in the soundcloud meetups? I co-run the meet in Boston, and we decided to make it monthly rather than the official seasonal session. I've found it's very difficult to get people to come out, even though it's an amazing way to network and get quality direct feedback on your sounds.

I'm glad this thread is still going, I haven't been on in almost a year... My sound has changed dramatically as my influences grow and production chops increase.

This first one is kind of cheating, since it's my virtual instrument company's soundcloud page and includes lots of different musicians, but some of my stuff's in there as well, so I guess it counts (Freewayland):

I haven't posted in forever, but you might remember the Solo Acoustic Covers thread I set up a couple years ago. I haven't been working on my production very much, but I have been playing a lot, and I've been uploading a lot of lo-fi covers to soundcloud--one by Mumford & Sons, a Radiohead song, a piece of a Steely Dan song (which I did on banjo, god knows why), some other stuff, and a couple of originals. I'm uploading new stuff all the time, so I'm happy to take requests, if for some lunatic reason you actually want to hear me do something else (I'm pretty fast, because I don't worry about sound quality too much, being that they're covers I'm just uploading for fun).

http://soundcloud.com/mrnoband

I did a cover of Separator, off Radiohead's last album, which I think came out pretty well. I'd especially like to hear what you guys think of this one. http://soundcloud.com/mrnoband/radiohead-separator-cover

If anyone's in NY and wants to play with me, PM me and I may very well be down to jam, record, or whatever--always looking for people to play with (I'm a singer/guitarist, mainly, as you'll notice if you bother to check my stuff out, but I'm not awful at bass and banjo, and I can work my way around a uke or a keyboard if necessary (even hold down a couple drumbeats, though not very well).

Edit: Oops, I just noticed there's a separate covers thread--but my soundcloud isn't all covers, does that mean it's all right to post here? I'm sorry, I've been away from the forums for a long time.

I have better luck uploading wavs than mp3s. Soundcloud is gonna transcode the file even if you upload an mp3, so it makes sense that it would sound better only being recoded once.

These are demos. We're rerecording everything (5 songs) very soon, probably next week. They'll still sound pretty bad. Our mics are better (sm57/akg condeser!) and we have a PA (that is crappy).

I play drums. I suppose its prog/post/space rock with sparse indie/emo female and, to a lesser extent, male vocals. Let me know if that seems accurate.

Also there's a violin.

Right now, what you'll hear on our soundcloud are all instrumental and as a trio. Bass, drums, guitar, nothing else.

Oh wow, thanks!

Since Fourteen is a pretty cool tune I'm going to follow you aswell. Desolate is a little too "sludgy" for my taste, but the rhythm guitars have a nice tone that fits the idea. I would lower the volume on the lead guitar as it's a little overpowering in my opinion. Keep it up!

Cool thanks man :)

I just uploaded another song I did. As of now I have no real studio equipment. Desolate was my first one shot recording (no re-takes). I've got a more cleaned up version I'm going to finish up. Hopefully coming soon I'll be getting some real studio equipment (USB audio interface, monitors, mics) and then I can focus on the production a little more. As of now it's just my guitar plugged into my laptops audio in jack.

A mixture of 'noise' tracks, breakcore tracks, psychoacoustic experimentation and one-guitar-and-drum-machine, heavy, odd-time/polyrhythmic stuff. Some really long, some really short.

My two newest tracks are 'Fragment I', which is 9 seconds of very precisely timed guitar tapping, and 'Headbreaker Pentaptych Section I' which starts off with almost-groovy, very-syncopated sampled drums, gets more and more electronic-sounding, and then erupts into chaotic spazzy breakbeat-based stuff. So check those out.

I also recommend 'Terror Fractal' and 'The Contortionist'. And 'Suchness' for a mellower but still uncomfortable and bizarre ambient track.

Here's some electronic instrumental stuff by me

What can I say? I'm pretty new to making music just by myself, but I feel like I'm improving all the time. I've finished the audio side of a 7-track conceptual-ish EP featuring the two tracks "Happosade" and "Maapallo" (artwork is still WIP, it's gonna be awesome), all the others are more or less raw demos/concepts of newer stuff recorded after those two tracks.

I won't put genres on my poo poo because, frankly, I haven't personally heard anything quite like it before (although my love of Kraftwerk is probably embarrassingly easy to pick up, I guess), it just sounds like... me. Here are some things I like, just to give you an idea:

- analogue synths
- delays
- reverbs
- noise
- ambient
- simplicity, minimalism
- loops, repetition (Krautrock?)

Everything created with hardware, no computer software used, apart from Audacity to record everything, unless you count the ever-wonderful Korg DS-10.

I'd love to hear some of y'all's opinions :)

edit: Oh yeah, if you just wanna check out one or two tracks, make it Maapallo and/or Ääniaalto :)
