Hm, I'm wondering if that could have helped with Eris (and possibly still can). We've always attacked her barking problem from the perspective of "click+treat if she obviously heard the trigger but didn't react, move her into the room until she quiets down otherwise". I was always too afraid of teaching her that barking in response to the trigger was correct to risk treating her while she was excited.

I was also going to suggest you walk them separately. I understand the mechanics of it may be difficult or impossible, but at least while you're working on the toughest points of Pi's reactivity maybe look into alternatives to the walk.

I'm going to recommend this as well. Kaidan gets overaroused around dogs on walks and Eris does as well but only if Kaidan starts it (as she largely feeds off of his energy). It took us a long time to realize this because Kaidan does make noise when he does it, it starts with just body language then Eris gets excited/whiny/pully/waggy (I WANNA PLAY WITH THAT DOG LETS PLAY LETS PLAY) then Kaidan freaks out.

It's been 6-8 months and we still haven't gotten to a point where we can comfortably walk them together yet. Eris by herself is a sweetheart and does great with distractions, and Kaidan's getting better by the week so much so that he surprises me sometimes with how good he is but try as we might things go rapidly downhill when they're together on walks. I know it's a bit different for you (also, I was upset to hear about Pi the other week, your dogs are awesome, and I really hope he pulls through okay), but I thought I'd throw in my situation.

a life less I need some help with shaping. I've been terribly lazy about training new things lately and I decided I want to teach Eris to put her paw over her nose/snout. She doesn't do this at all naturally and so I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how I could encourage it and then capture it. It doesn't really seem like something I could lure.

Yeah I was mostly looking to induce the behavior to capture, I definitely don't have the skill to do any advanced free shaping or anything. a life less also recommended a post it note so I think I'll be playing around with that this week. I'm excited :3: Also she might kill me.

Oh boy. So the corner of Kaidan's crate tray broke some time back, no big deal, until the other day. He had to stay home for a couple hours with not much exercise before hand and dug a nice hole in our carpet :( He used to be okay with that on occasion at the old house but even though we've been here about 5 months now we never went through the entire crate training process with him again as we probably should have and yeahhh, completely our fault. That said it's time to get in gear on crate games and other such crate training things. And get him a new crate. :sigh:

Alright I've got an issue with a seemingly simple solution but it's been regressing so I need a sanity check. Kaidan has always had an issue with licking people. If you have any exposed skin, chances are he'll sit there for (not exaggerating) 5, 10, 15 minutes licking incessantly. This includes arms, legs, neck, etc. We normally deal with this with a standard 'leave it' and click and treat when he stops, works great. a couple months ago we started having people over on a more regular basis and he did completely fine, he wasn't getting obsessive about the licking at all, however over the last week it's gotten worse than ever before. It's been getting to the point where I can't even let him sit next to guests because every 30 seconds I'm telling him to leave it. Do I need to up it to higher value treats and keep being consistent or is there something else I can try?

REBIRTH OF HARDCORE PRIDE!
I forgot to mention, we have tried both of the above on fairly short runs to little avail. I've tried isolating him in a room with no one else for ~10 seconds each time and as soon as he comes out he runs right back to whoever he was licking, and if we try to have that person leave the room he just moves on to someone else. It's a really strange issue and he's being pretty persistent about it despite it getting better for quite a while.

REBIRTH OF HARDCORE PRIDE!
Yeah I figured it's mostly a consistency thing and something we need to get through, wasn't sure if there was anything I had forgotten about. I hadn't thought of the number of people, we've been seeing this both with one person over and with 3-4 people over. It is slightly more manageable with only one person so I'll probably focus on working on it in that circumstance a little more. I should also mention this is all with people he is familiar with. We're definitely just going to need to keep on top of keeping a rotation of all three solutions based on circumstance (clicking + treating for being good, and then either removing him or removing the people based on the situation if he starts to lick). And yes, he's a Husky so none of this stubbornness is particularly new or surprising, it's part of the charm :3: In any case, thanks for the help, we won't have much chance to work with him this weekend but over the next two weeks or so we'll have a few opportunities.

Oooooh, yes. He definitely does that, I have no idea why I didn't think about that with this situation. He almost never does it to me, he does it to my girlfriend a little more often (she's not quite as strict with him sometimes :3:), but he'll do whatever he can get away with to anyone. I will keep that in mind as well, thanks!

REBIRTH OF HARDCORE PRIDE!
I don't really have much advice as I haven't worked on Kaidan's prey drive all that much but I usually just get his focus using "look at that". We started off using it to deal with his arousal when he'd see other dogs on leash and I started using it with prey animals recently with a lot of success lately. If he happens to see them before I do he still gets excited, tail up and ears perked, but he doesn't tug at the end of the leash anymore. If I notice them first I tell him look at that, he looks then looks back at me for his treat. I normally have him sit as well so that we can wait until the animal leaves so we don't need to walk by them. I know WolfensteinBag has had a lot of success managing Buddy's prey drive but I'm not sure what methods she used so hopefully she'll chime in.

Could anyone toss a couple links my way for some fun focus and impulse control games? I've been losing Eris' focus on walks lately when she sees something interesting so I want to start working on it again. And impulse control is something I've wanted to work on with both dogs for a while but haven't gotten around it.

REBIRTH OF HARDCORE PRIDE!
I need some advice on recent changes in Kaidan's behavior. I've never really thought he had separation anxiety but I think he might be developing it (?) but I'm not sure. The worst that's happened before is that he didn't do well in his crate for a couple weeks right after we moved to this house (over a year ago now), and of course if he doesn't get enough exercise which has only happened once because something came up and we had to leave the house on short notice so we have a hole in the carpet to show for that one.

Recently (last couple weeks) he hasn't been doing as well in his crate. We keep both crates covered with sheets and I'll come home to most of his inside the crate, and lately I've noticed a new small hole in the carpet on the front edge of the crate, so he's sticking his paws over the pan and through the wires to scratch at the floor. He's been getting roughly the same amount of exercise as usual, but I've been slacking on training and mental stimulation lately so that could also be part of it.

The other thing that's worrying me is that lately my girlfriend and I have gone from spending most of our time in the living room when we're home to being in the office for about half of it due to both of us being busy and needing to be in there. Kaidan hasn't been too happy about this. We have two couches in the living room so normally we sit on one and he goes and lays on the other (hip dysplasia, doesn't like laying next to people on soft surfaces). When we go in the office, after about 20 minutes he'll be sitting in the living room and he'll start whining and barking. He'll whine and bark a few times, then stop for a few minutes then do it again, etc.

We haven't been doing anything to reinforce it but it hasn't stopped. At first I thought it was for attention but over the last couple days I would come back out after he stops for a while (treating it as I would letting a whining dog out of their crate, etc) and he doesn't seem to want attention. I'll come out and sit on the couch, paying no attention to him, and he jumps up and lays on the other end of the couch and falls asleep.

It really seems like he's upset about us all (Eris typically comes in and lays down on one of the dog beds in the office) being in the office and not in the living room. I have his bed in there too and I'll call him in and have him lay down on it but after a few minutes he gets up, goes out to the living room and cries. I've tried bringing in the blanket he normally sleeps on as well but to no avail. All of this combined makes me feel like it's SA. What do you guys think? If it is, what is the PI recommended book for dealing with this? I can't remember anymore, and I'm guessing that book thread is long gone in the archives at this point.

EDIT: He's also taken to running into the office to bark/yell at us for extended periods of time. I should also add that over the last week or so he's been more clingy around the house. If he's laying down, almost asleep, and I get up to do something around the house he gets up and follows me. That's very unusual for him.

His hips get a little worse when it's cold, such a now, but any day that we do above average walks he gets Rimadyl. Today, for example, we went to the park for about an hour, I gave him Rimadyl before, and he's been exhibiting all of these systems all day (not constantly, just when the situation arises that both my girlfriend and I are in the office). And also since it stops when we're out in the living room with him, I discounted the possibility of it being his hips a little.

EDIT: For reference for anyone unfamiliar with me, he's a 6-7 year old Husky.

REBIRTH OF HARDCORE PRIDE!

a life less posted:

Yeah, it sounds like he might be uncomfortable. Maybe consult a vet to talk about pain management. How does the muscle look in his back end? Still there? Or is it decreasing? I recently picked up an exercise ball for Cohen, and I think you could probably get some benefit out of it for Kaidan too. It's like a giant yoga peanut thing from Fit Paws. If you're interested I can give you a link. They work by gently exercising muscles with minimum impact, which is probably what a dysplastic dog needs.

His muscles have been staying really strong, I've been walking him 2+ miles a day on soft ground. I'm just having a hard time reconciling the fact that he doesn't behave like this if one of us is in the living room at all, but yeah I'll try giving him Rimadyl more often and seeing if that helps. If you could share a link for that it would be great. We have an old egge we got Eris a long time ago and Kaidan never showed interest in it, maybe if this is a bit different we can try to get him interested in it. On a slight derail, I think we're aiming this coming summer or next winter for his surgery, not sure yet if they'll want to do one side or both. We have a lot of big life stuff coming up that won't allow us to do it earlier, sadly.

Thanks for the link and the suggestions! Those balls look pretty cool so I might pick one up for him. I'll definitely be trying some various things. It's been difficult lately because our backyard is unusable but we're looking to move within the next couple months so a lot of stuff will be easier and more fun again. We can't take him to the dog park so he really hasn't had a chance to just go all out and run in a really long time. I've been looking for hydrotherapy locations nearby but the only one in the immediate area closed in 09, the next closest ones seem to be an hour+ away.

Kaidan's separation anxiety is getting worse rapidly. He's torn two ~2"x4" holes in the carpet by reaching through his crate, today I tried putting a blanket down under his crate and he pulled it all the way in and destroyed it. Before leaving this morning we went on an hour long walk through a park, trained, he and Eris chased each other in the yard for a good 20-30 minutes, and I gave him rimadyl. I've been playing crate games with him nightly for 2+ weeks now, and I picked up "Don't Leave Me" over the weekend but I haven't gotten to any section about management yet (planning to do that tonight). I think I'm going to try to get him into the vet soon - he had a check up recently and it went well (right before this started) so I'm considering taking him to the specialist we saw about a year ago. Does anyone have other suggestions? I'm trying to make sure we cover everything, this came up more or less out of nowhere and it's a little overwhelming how bad it's gotten this quickly.

REBIRTH OF HARDCORE PRIDE!
I've been out of the loop for a good long while now (lots of big life changes for better or worse) and I have a lot that I need to work on with my dogs again :\ Mostly Eris though. The primary issues are reactivity on leash and fence fighting with the neighbor's dogs.

I still remember the rough guidelines of how to deal with these issues, and I've been refreshing myself by reading through the links from the OP. My main problem is that at this point it's just me with the 2 dogs, and none of my friends have dogs so I don't have a good way of replicating the behavior in a controlled environment. I try to work with Eris before she gets over threshold but that seems to be increasingly difficult.

For the leash reactivity I'm normally able to spot things that will set her off before she does, so I'll try to get her attention asap and keep her calm while passing whatever the object is. This has been increasingly unsuccessful because as soon as she sees whatever it is I can't get her attention anymore. As far as the fence fighting goes, my neighbor has been leaving their dogs in their backyard 24/7 lately, when I let Eris and Kaidan out, they bark then lunge at the fence so Eris' hackles raise and she starts running around barking and I can't get her to calm down / give me her attention.

Basically looking for help on where to even start considering the situation I'm in. I'm guessing that I should start walking the dogs separately so it's easier for me to work with them out on walks at the very least. I should probably also work with them in increasingly distracting environments, but sometimes that's difficult to do without going straight from 'not distracting at all' -> 'overstimulating'.

Going to do that today and start working on it this afternoon. I've never done mat work before so I'll start on that once we get LAT back down. She used to be really good about it but not as much anymore.

How is Eris on leash in the backyard? You could work the two in tandem if the noise of the neighbor dogs is below threshold from the other side of the yard.

So far she's 100% focused if she's on leash in the back yard. She pays no attention to the neighbor dogs at all.

I've been doing this a bit but I wanted to clarify. My situation is not nearly as consistent as the one laid out in your example, so I've mostly been walking around and hoping I find something that distracts her, but not enough to put her over threshold.
