Anyone know what the cheapest MIDI-to-USB cables are that officially work with the iPad? When I bought a keyboard years ago I picked up an M-AUDIO UNO 1x1 which is supposed to work (the latest model) but whoops, I have the first model which apparently doesn't work with the iPad. Great. The OP should be updated to mention Filtatron and Multitrack DAW. Also, the "Effects & Utilities" section should really be renamed to "Sequencers & DAWs" since that's what most of those apps are. Am I the only person really liking iSequence for iPad? It's such a great app once you import your own samples. The sequencer takes a few minutes to get used to since it's a bit different from most DAWs but it's really easy to lay down stuff, and effect automation is handled really well. It doesn't get anywhere near enough attention.

On the fastest arp settings (32th) it seems like the app is dropping notes due to high latency otherwise it's perfect. I can't say if it's a software or hardware limitation. I wish changing time signatures was easier, but you can sort of work around it. I've actually downloaded a lot of the apps in the OP. I'd like to try Nanostudio but I'm waiting for the iPad version. Studio.HD would be great if they would add a few more effects (namely a compressor). I like that I can work with ideas in iSequence and then drop them into Studio.HD to get down vocal ideas. I'm thinking of trying some of the Korg stuff, but I'm not a big synth guy so I don't know how much I'd use it.

I've had a lot of fun messing around with Music Studio, although I don't think there's any way to change time signature beyond the quarter note variations they have available. Is there any other similar music studio program with more versatile options for time signature changes?

Posted this a few days ago in the iOS app thread, copy/pasting here: If anyone wants to play with a turntable app but is too cheap for djay, Tap DJ is pretty cool ($1.99 right now)...not that I really know what I'm doing other than making noise. Not sure if they plan on supporting iPad (whether universal or a separate version), but it seems ok in 2x mode. Menus are larger than they would be in a native app of course, but the main turntable UI works fine. I just released a small utility app called GyrOSC. It sends the motion sensor data (gyroscope, accelerometer, compass) from your iOS device wirelessly to any device that receives OSC (Open Sound Control) messages. If you're a Max/MSP, Pure Data, Processing, or Live user, you can use the sensors to control sound parameters. The app costs $0.99. More info on my site. Apparently, FL Studio is coming to iOS for both iPhone and iPad. It will come with 40 free instruments and 50 more instruments will be available as in-app purchases. I can't find any pricing info yet.

 Garageband for the iPad Software instruments, loops, multitrack recorder, can take the iPad project and use it on Garageband Mac or Logic Studio. You can plug your guitar in. You can use CoreMIDI. Do all sorts of crazy poo poo with it for $5 which is going to piss off every other DAW app creator on the app store.

Dammit, if Garageband requires iOS 4.3 I will be so pissed. I just finally got used to having my iPad jailbroken on 4.2.1 and it will be really painful deciding between all my jailbroken stuff and Garageband... oh, and a proper working orientation switch again.

Yeah I spent like $80 getting amplitube and the 4 track recorder for both my phone and pad and now GarageBand pops up for $5. I am hoping (only out of spite) that the amp sims are a little worse than the dedicated amp apps but in all probability they will sound pretty drat good. Size is also a pretty big concern for me as well, I only have the 16GB model and it runs pretty close to full all the time, I would hate for the GB app to take up multiple gigabytes with just its loops and samples. edit: That Apogee input looks significantly better than the Amplitube one. If it lowers the noise floor then I will be all over it. I am a terrible consumer.
