Audio is probably not too hard but I highly doubt that if there's a MIDI interface for iPad, that most of these programs support MTC or MIDI clock.

I also bought the Electribe a little while ago and I know a little more about that, but I find myself messing around with both rather than actually doing anything constructive - is there a good how-to anywhere online? Yes, there is! For a really (really!) great general synthesizer how-to, check out Yoozer's "How to (re)create a sound" Thread. After going through page 1 there, you should understand most of the knobs on almost any synth out there. Then check the YouTube channel I posted in the OP next to the iMS-20 app, and search the guy's videos for "MS-20". He has seven videos dedicated to the original MS-20 synth, where he explains the control panel and the patch panel in detail. Figuring out the iMS-20 sequencer and drum machine on your own then should be easy. If not, check the app's online manual. EDIT: Yoozer's thread will also make you understand the iElectribe better and you can access the it's online help from inside the app under "help", in the hidden menu bar at the top of the screen. Numark iDJ for iPad is on sale at the moment for $1.99. I haven't tried it, but it looks very good for the price. You can import songs directly from the iPod app and there's a beat-matching algorithm too.

There was an update for the KORG iMS-20 today, claiming support for external MIDI keyboards and drum pads, connected with the iPad camera connection kit. Looks like I finally have to get on of those kits. Okay, first impressions of GarageBand on my iPad 1, running iOS 4.3: - the velocity sensing works incredibly well with the keyboard and drum instruments - you can hit the drums at several different spots to produce different sounds - overall program performance is good and there are only some occasions where you see a loading bar saying "optimizing performance" - the guitar and bass interface is really cool, but you can't play any chords you want. You can only play eight preset chords from your song's global key. - autoplay is funny, but I don't see myself using it really - while the are lots of stomp boxes and amps to choose from when recording something through the iPad's mic/line-in (which I haven't tried yet) you can't apply those to the included guitar instrument. The guitar instrument only features four guitar presets with zero or two fixed stomp boxes, that you can only switch on or off. - you don't seem to be able to edit your midi tracks after recording them in real time. I.e. if you want to change a note afterwards, you'll have to play the part again. There is an auto-quantization option though. Edit: - you can somehow only trim recorded clips from the right/end and not from the left/start I guess I expected a little more from GarageBand. The keyboard instrument is awesome and offers tons and tons of different sounds. The drums are cool too, but the guitar/bass instrument is lacking so much, even though the interface is great. I ran into a bug a couple of times now where the sustain feature on a keyboard instrument clip would always deactivate, even after re-enabling it and even though the button graphic still shows sustain enabled. Also, trimming a clip from the left does work sometimes and sometimes not. When it works, I can't trim all the way though, just a couple of beats. Trimming from the right always works fine. Is there a way to loop a selection of song sections other than "all" and a single one? I've got a feeling that I'm a bit too harsh on the app. The price is great for what you get and it actually is lots of fun to play around with it. Also, I'm still amazed by the whole interface design. I guess I was just a little too hyped up about it being a full-blown DAW, like the original GarageBand.

Okay goons, I just finished my first song with GarageBand on my iPad 1. It's dedicated to everyone standing in line for the iPad 2 today  I used all eight available tracks and recorded vocals with my mobile phone's headset (since I haven't got one of those splitters to plug in a better mic). The drum and keyboard parts were played on a USB MIDI Keyboard I attached to the iPad with the Camera Connection Kit. The experience was alright, but the app's performance dropped noticeably when I got towards the end. Those "optimizing performance" bars kept popping up a lot. Another feature I'd wish for, is setting clip-volume individually, because my mic recordings were never at the same volume. EDIT: Picture!

I read that you can even attach USB audio interfaces to the Camera Connection Kit and have some apps output the audio digitally.

Finally! Now I only need an app to paste my KORG creations into. I understand studio.HD is great for arranging pre-made stuff. iSequence does that too though, but also offers its own instruments (and thus is more complicated when believing its app store reviews). Which of the two apps would you recommend?

I bought iSequence last night, because more functionality is always better, right? Well, the instruments are alright and you can paste stuff from other apps, but the workflow and navigating the interface is tedious. You can have 8 tracks playing at once, but each track can only play one note/sample at the same time. So, when you want to play a chord of three notes, you only have 5 tracks left for that beat, add some drums and maybe a second instrument and you're done quickly. You can of course bounce your patterns and just arrange them as loops (taking only one track per loop) but the interface makes managing this library of patterns, loops and song parts really frustrating. Especially when you want to change something, you have to find the pattern, edit it, bounce it and edit the new loop into the according song part (which is just another pattern). Patterns are automatically labeled with numbers only, so losing track of what's what happens quickly. All in all, if you just want to create loops, it's a cool app. You can do some nice things with effects and editing automation is really easy. If you want to create and arrange complete songs though, it is possible, but not much fun in my opinion. Edit:  Okay, I decided to live on dry toast for the next couple of days and also bought studio.HD ... First of all, the interface is amazing, BUT there is a huge bug that detects an incorrect BPM for most pasted clips. Of course, the default BPM of a clip cannot be changed, so if the BPM are different from your song, studio.HD will time-warp the clip. I checked their forums and it's a known bug/feature ... awesome

I want to get some more into Ableton Live and was wondering how the Launchpad/APC-20 compares to touchAble on an iPad. Apart from real buttons and faders, their functionality seems almost identical from what I've read/watched so far. Edit: meh, I got touchAble but I'm not that satisfied with it. The WiFi latency, even in an adhoc network, is still to much to trigger beats properly and while it's possible to control tons of features, you're constantly fighting the iPad's "small" screen size by hiding and showing pages.
