I saw "repairability" get a subhead in one of the videos, but wasn't sure how far they were actually going to take it. Now they just have to deliver on it. I'm split between the two. My Aura One's 7.8" screen is just a little too big for longer sessions. The 7" Libra may be perfect, but the Clara at 6" will be even more portable, and has better colors on the sleep-covers. The Elipsa was too big and she complained non-stop about her Kindle Paperwhite (6-inch) feeling "cramped".

I have a Kindle Scribe and a Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, and I’m considering the Libra Color. If the Libra had the same screen size as the Scribe I’d already have it preordered.

The only reason I'm not extremely hype about this is that I'd want it for reading comics, even the 8" Forma screen feels a bit cramped for that -- my main comic reading device is a 10.5" tablet. I think the 7" Libra would definitely be too small. If Kobo drops an 8-10" comic ereader with a colour screen, though? I'd go for that.

My understanding is these color e-readers are pretty dull and reading comics on them may not be the best experience.

Yeah, I haven't really seen much but it seems like right now color e-ink is kind of a novelty to make the UI a bit nicer and not something you could use as a daily driver for color content.

Huh. My Libra 2 has a couple days left in its return window. I could basically upgrade to color+stylus for $30 extra. Or I could lose an inch of real estate and hardware buttons, but step up in display tech and get $60 back in my pocket. Tough call.

My Libra’s return window closed the day before this color news dropped. Womp womp. I really like my Libra 2, so I’m not going to allow myself to FOMO too much over this. It got me reading every day again, helped break my doomscrolling habits.

According to this guy I guess the color screens are darker and kind of poo poo for black & white content, which is disappointing. Would be nice to have color covers and for the handful of full color manga I have, but if the normal reading experience for books, which is black text on white background, is so degraded I don't really understand the draw of these? The ads seem to indicate that they'll look great, but hard to just believe the company's own marketing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaWnBMvdKH0

Yeah, color e-ink displays have less contrast (the "white" background color is darker than black and white models), less detail (it slashes the effective resolution) and the colors themselves are pretty weird looking. These Kobos use Kaleido 3, which improves things over prior generations, but I'm not convinced that they've sufficiently solved any of the major issues, except maybe the crappy refresh.

The new Clara BW seems pretty good if someone's looking for a new reader though.

Is the Kobo Forma a good deal in 2024? What I'm looking for is an e-ink reader with a larger screen than a Kindle Paperwhite for reading manga. I've tried on the Kindle and it's just a bit too small. I noticed the Forma has native CBR / CBZ support, too, but I know it's an older model. Any opinions on it? I'm basically not looking to drop a lot of money on a niche use device and they pop up for a refurbished price of $150.

I don't read a lot of comics on mine but it works pretty well for that imo. I'd probably enjoy an even bigger screen in a vacuum but my eyesight isn't great generally. I'm a big fan and I expect to keep using it as long as it's functional.

Check the capacity, I know Kobo themselves sell refurbs but usually only the 8GB SKU. You'd be running out of space fast. If they happen to be 32GB, go for it. I went back to my Forma after my disappointment with the Sage.

The $150 one on the Kobo site is 8 gb. But that's probably not a big deal if you're fine transferring stuff to and from your computer, right? I actually ordered one myself recently, since it seems like a great deal for an eink screen that big.

Someone actually got the Libra Colour super early: https://www.reddit.com/r/kobo/comments/1c198fa/got_the_libra_color_early_ama/ Has a few pictures in OP and some more in the replies at various times of day and light settings for anyone concerned.

I think the Forma was a better device than the Sage that replaced it, buttons got a little better on the Sage physically, but the both have the slightly dodgy lighting and the Sage’s battery is WAY worse, like from the get-go. If you don’t want to jump to the Scribe/Elipsa size and cost, it’s probably your best option.

The manga I have on my Kobo Forma seems to average average around 600-700kb per page, so in ~7gb of space it can fit 10,000 pages or 500 20-page chapters. So yeah you'll be fine unless you want to stick multiple entire long running manga series on it. Or maybe all 1000+ chapters of One Piece since 1997. And yeah I'd say the screen feels just right for manga. Nicer than the smaller kindle oasis I was using before. RPATDO_LAMD fucked around with this message at 03:46 on Apr 12, 2024 |

I'm probably going to pick up a Libra color to replace my Voyage. The contrast looks decent in the Reddit photos. I'm not sure I'll use color all that often, but it helps justify the upgrade when my Voyage still functions decently. I'd also love to get out of the Amazon ecosystem.

I have a Libra 2 and only read books so it seems like a sidegrade or even downgrade. I’ll just keep rocking this, my favourite ereader by far and very happy to be out of the Amazon ecosystem.

FreelanceSocialist posted:Do you still have your Boox Palma? I saw one on FB Marketplace and the form factor (plus better OS/app capabilities vs my Kobo) looks enticing. I do! But my use has definitely waned… it’s very useful, though, for reading these dead forums while having coffee outside or when my eyes are tired of looking at LED screens during work breaks. The battery life is just good enough I can leave it for a day or two and still have enough juice left for an hour or two of browsing before needing to recharge it. But if I’m not outside or tired of screens then I’m 99% more likely to just use my phone cuz my brain’s too habituated to stop looking for it. It’s all the same mindless tasks but more convenient immediate screen response. And cell data support… also, I knew the Palma doesn’t have GPS before I bought it but in retrospect, I should’ve waited for something with that option so I could use it as a nav device. I’m sure mine would be getting a lot more exercise these days if it was a bit more comfortable leaving the house.

Right exactly, by limiting it to wifi-only it becomes fairly limited add-on luggage at this form-factor. Still a fun toy to pull out for variety but not something that I’ll be changing my habits to reach for by default.

Can this thing survive in a backpack? Like my Paperwhite has a case and can get knocked around a bit and is fine. How fragile is this thing?

I would concur with this, I had the same fear when I first got mine and was like “geeez, this seems thin and easy to gently caress up”. but it’s VERY solid and I’m not particularly careful with it. I don’t love the folio cover thing so I mostly bareback it as well. I’ve only ever broken one Kindle and that was in the seatback of a plane when a guy had zero patience and wouldn’t let me get up and out of my seat on the aisle so he could go to window and he forced his way through in front of me and somehow put so much pressure on that seatback pocket that the screen fritzed on my Paperwhite (like a gen 2 or something, it was years ago). I was EXTREMELY pissed off at that dude.
