TheFluff posted:Don't buy that. It's a terrible blurred and warpsharped release that actually has less detail than the (japanese) DVD's. It's probably better than the old R1 DVD's but that's only because those are so incredibly terrible, like most anime DVD's from that era. I was actually waiting for those blurays. You don't happen to know how the R2 European DVD's compare to the japanese/american FLCL DVD's? Worth just getting those instead of the blurays if they are blurred and just generally lovely?

It's just all the usual Q-Tec poo poo of smudging and aliased lines. I probably suck at this, but the BD version sure looks better to me from those screens, even if it's just an upscale. http://www.npc-releases.net/images/flcl1-bd.png looks a lot nicer than http://www.npc-releases.net/images/flcl1-dvd.png imo.

At the very least, it doesn't "look like rear end" or whatever sinful appearance upscale is supposed to assume. Is it out? Rightstuf lists it as being released Feb 22.

Ice Blue posted:On a related subject, I know that anime movies aren't hard to convert to HD due to the nature of the fact that it was made for bigger screens with more relative detail than television, but I was wondering if this only applied to movies or all traditional cel animation? Could they for example convert Bebop or Ranma to HD by taking highe resolution scans of the original analog masters? Or does it not work like that? Works fine for tv series as well as long as there's a good analog master. See the Japanese Lain bluray release for a good example...

So are they just releasing the Kenshin OAV's or the Tv series as well? I'll buy the gently caress out of whatever they release, but it looks like only the OAV's from that page 6000yen for Tsuioku-hen OAV is actually pretty nice in comparison to Japanese bluray prices in general ( ). edit: Seems like price should be 8400yen, but amazon jp lists it at 6100. Since there's been several releases of the DVDs in the west, and I think they sold ok, I guess the blurays should make their ways over here too. Can't wait.

Uh... why haven't I seen anyone in here mention that Lain is apparently being released in the west on Bluray now as well. http://www.amazon.com/Serial-Experiments-Lain-Complete-Blu-ray/dp/B008YRL5V4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352061636&sr=8-1&keywords=lain http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/catalogmgr/hgZqbBFiuFL8a50SpN/browse/item/96150/4/0/0 Amazon has the release date as 27 November, which is pretty soon! I'm quite happy about this.

Uh, does that movie have some kind of kult following in Japan or something, cause a bluray release of that was rather unexpected to me. That movie is weird as gently caress.

I was gonna buy the Funimation version but it looks like it'll be a hassle to store so I ended up buying the Amazon version. Out of curiosity, is this the same video quality as the UK blurays, or will they be different (remastered or something?)

ultimatemegax posted:Funimation will take the video masters from Sunrise and do their own encoding (which tends to have different brightness levels than the JP equipment) and those will be authored onto the NA BDs. It'll have different quality (and likely worse due to differing brightness levels). This is pretty much standard for Funi and Viz (as of late). So basically, since I have the UK blurays, and don't really care about the extras of the limited boxsets, I can safely ignore the US release?

Hey, I just opened up this thread to say this. Finally got a shipping notification of this set (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HSHDGHW/ ). Good thing I preordered it early as well, I was only charged 88£ for it (I guess I preordered it when it was listed as such), and it seems like it goes for 108£ now.

ultimatemegax posted:The Aniplex method is countering what is the current trend in North America: streaming and not buying discs. When one of your distributors says that 3,000 copies of a 12-13 episode set at $40 after discounts is a "hit" for them, it's obvious that the disc strategy is not doing as well as it had before. Also, anime fans in the western world are notoriously against actually paying for their stuff. Everyone are used to "it being ok" to download fansubs when the shows are unlicensed and honestly, it's not like 99% of the crowd really cares if the show is licensed, or even commercially available already. Streaming is convenient and generally dirt cheap, which actually makes it a viable vector for the content owners. I'm surprised that anyone bothers releasing boxsets that aren't extremely overpriced collectors items at this point.

Robert Denby posted:A new distribution company called Cinelicious is going to restore and re-release Belladonna of Sadness, a phenomenal and extremely disturbing anime film from 1973, theatrically and on DVD and Blu-Ray next year. This is one I never thought would get any kind of official release in the states (the only time I can think of it being shown theatrically was at the Spectacle in Brooklyn), but this is very welcome news. Wow, this is pretty cool. I've never actually seen this, but I've heard great things about it.
