I'm looking to move from a 24" 1080 monitor to a 27" or 32" UHD monitor. Would driving them at 1080 mean poorer image quality?

Yup, I have a Nvidia 970 but am happy with running games at 1080... Would getting a g-sync monitor help then?

I ended up picking up an Acer XB271HU at a local store based on their recommendations. Pretty happy with it and I guess 1440P isn't bad at all! I'll pick up a 1080 GTX if I see any performance issues but I play games like Stellaris and Total Warhammer so should be fine for the time being.

Could anyone recommend a cheap, decent monitor arm for a XB271HU? My current desk isn't very deep and the big-rear end stand for the XB271 means that the monitor sits right in front of my face. I'm thinking of getting a monitor arm so the monitor sits further back.

I have the Acer xb271hu (1440p) monitor and was thinking of getting a PS4 pro - is piping 1080p output to the monitor going to lead to noticeably worse image quality?

Worse than a 1080p native TV/monitor?

I've been rocking a 27" Predator 144Hz IPS Gsync monitor but after seeing cheap 34" VA panels out there (100Hz FreeSync) - would I be better off getting a second 27" or switching to a 34"? I primarily game and code on it.

Do the larger monitors (>27) have some form of native PIP to allow you to split the screen into two logical monitors? I have two 27" displays and the advantage there is I can have something running on a browser screen on one monitor while I play a game full-screen on the other.

Well, I dual boot frequently between Windows and Ubuntu for one thing and I also game on my PS4 using one monitor while the other is on Windows.

I wish LG would do a smaller sized version. The ergonomics of a 48" on a normal desk doesn't make any sense.

How bad of a visual downgrade would it be to hook up a PS5 to a 1440p monitor? I prefer gaming at my desk these days and Sony allegedly still isn’t supporting 1440p output from the console.

benq updated the website to remove mention of it lol they specifically deleted the line: "If you’re interested in high frame rates, you may want to consider a good QHD gaming monitor, as 1440p will be supported by the PS5 with a higher likelihood of 120Hz in that resolution." so doesn't look good. shrike82 fucked around with this message at 17:23 on Oct 30, 2020 |

The PS4 Pro doesn't support it while the One X does so Sony hasn't been great about it.

monitors have never been great at upscaling/downscaling so you'd prefer the device (console, PC, etc.) to do it

lol i wonder when we'll get to a point where a 4K monitor will be viable for gaming i've had my 1440p144 Acer Predators for 5 years at this point and wouldn't mind upgrading to 4K for coding but even with a high-end Ampere card (A6000), I don't think frame-rates would be where I'd want them to be...

Any thoughts on the Gigabyte M28U? HDMI2.1 120 + 144 + 4K + USB-C input + built-in KVM is very appealing
|
# ¿ Jun 8, 2021 14:19 |

It has three USB 3 ports. anyway the issue with the USB-C input is that it (apparently) only provides 15W of power so you can't have a single cable solution for any laptop i'm now looking at the Acer display which uses the same panel but has proper power for the USB C input

The 32" 4K HDMI2.1 Gigabyte FI32U looks neat but apparently the USB-C port doesn't support alt-display which kills my interest in it The latest wave of HDMI2.1 monitors all seem to be missing one feature or another that makes them a hard buy

i'll check them in-store at some point but do people find 32" monitors usable for gaming / work?

no, it's actually a KVM - you plug a KBM to the monitor and the monitor to two PCs through USB + USB-Cquote:GIGABYTE released the M28U, a unique 28-inch 4K Ultra HD gaming monitor that comes with an integrated KVM feature. This lets you effectively switch between two PCs. Simply plug the PCs to the monitor's multiple display inputs; plug your keyboard, mouse, and USB headset to the monitor's downstream USB ports, and the monitor's two upstream USB connections to the two PCs (one of these is a USB-C). Switching between the two is as easy as pressing a button on the monitor. This will prove particularly useful if you have a personal desktop and a company laptop to use in your home office, and don't want to clutter the place or waste time plugging things in and out.

Cygni posted:Looks like the new cheaper Innolux 4k/144hz IPS panel is pretty dang good. $600, got HDMI 2.1. annoying thing is it's almost perfect except for USB-C only supplying 15W so you still need another cable for powering the connected laptop

Just pulled the triggered on the Alienware QD-OLED - I'm going to try to find a way to mount it as-is and my current 27" in portrait mode Pretty hyped about having an OLED as a desktop monitor after seeing some of the reviews
|
# ¿ Mar 28, 2022 00:10 |

I'm curious how you use 3x 27 in landscape - you have to move your head to track what's going at the two sides and looking at your screenshot, you end up doing split windows on the left and right monitors might be worth trying out one or both of the side monitors in portrait

Got my Alienware QD-OLED and I’m trying to understand how HDR works on Windows - does the content eg games, videos have to explicitly support HDR for it to kick in? Anyone else with the monitor have tips on config both at the Win 10 level and the monitor level?
|
# ¿ May 6, 2022 20:48 |

Initial impressions on the Alienware QD-OLED - 1. HDR - I tried Cyberpunk and a couple HDR YouTube videos - it's very nice but for whatever reason isn't as "eye-popping" as my LG OLED C2 2. Curvature - A lot less aggressive than most curved monitors which I like 3. Text fringing - I personally can't see it 4. 34" UW resolution - Not specific to this monitor but it's noticeably lower res than the 27" 1440P I'm used to 5. Stand - I guess it's a requirement given the size of the monitor but it takes too much space - I'll need to get a mount for this
|

Could be the subpixel stuff - hopefully future QD-OLEDs solve the issue But drat is true black on a computer monitor awesome - black bars surrounding a video just disappear

# ¿ May 7, 2022 05:12 |

it’s expensive first gen tech so it’ll be superseded by cheaper, better monitors pretty quickly and if minileds end up being the better tech, you won’t have to worry about burn in but in the mean time, it’s a sweet luxury buy especially given how much time I sit in front of the monitor goddamn watching a hdr video with black backgrounds and seeing the background blend perfectly with the black bars at the side is nuts

people will have different tolerances for the qd-oled trade-offs but drat using a special oled dark mode for my IDE of choice and seeing perfect black backgrounds to text is nuts I’m realizing now how much light normal monitors emit even with system and app level dark modes
