Pretty sure 1000s won't run without at least some battery charge, so permanently plugging it in won't be an option.

Sir Unimaginative posted:The old 1800 and 2200 batteries are things Sony doesn't appear to make anymore. (EDIT: As in the PSP is listed as discontinued on Sony's company store and replacement batteries are not listed at all.) You might find a couple on independent stores' shelves but your options are more likely It's not turning on even when plugged-in, so knockoff battery it is! And if anyone has any idea on a good knockoff battery I am all ears.

A friend of mine has a PSP/Madden 08 pack that's been sitting in his closet for a while. Any ballpark ideas on how much I should spend on it?

I bought the black one and it works just fine. I'd be embarrassed to take a pink one around with me you know. I still need to get to Tactics Ogre because that game looks awesome, but I'm being distracted by Ni No Kuni on PS3 (also not pink).

I'm not sure if this is useful to anyone else but I realized that there are a ton of PSP games I want to try and I didn't really like the way they looked when scaled on my Vita so I started checking around for a cheap PSP. blinq.com is selling a ton of factory refurbished PSP Go systems on eBay for $79.99 shipped: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-Playst...=item5d4bbbf075 I ordered one last week and received it today and other than coming in a generic white Sony box it is indistinguishable from new. I had it modded within minutes to run homebrew and I'm really pleased with it so far. I was taken aback at first by how small the system seems when compared to a Vita (it's like a slightly thicker iPhone 5) but PSP and SNES games look great on it and I have no issues with the control layout. Is the screen on the Go any bigger/smaller than the original PSP and is the screen quality any better?

BadAstronaut posted:Is the screen on the Go any bigger/smaller than the original PSP and is the screen quality any better? Go's screen is a bit smaller than the regular PSP's, but it has significantly better color reproduction, and none of the interlacing issues of the 3000 series screens.

PSP is finally dead in Japan. No more new PSPs will be shipped out over there.

re: Go chat ... still use and love mine. I have a Vita too, but the Go slips into a pocket if I'm not carrying a bag and still need some sort of distraction. Still play Lumines 2 (ripped), Hot Shots Tennis (still can't 100% anyone in brutal difficulty), pick at Jeanne d'Arc, and I have a pile of games still I've barely touched. The last one to sort of come out of nowhere and 'wow' me was Gladiator Begins, but I got stuck eventually. I need to spend more time on Eliminage. I still wish the Vita had the Go's suspend feature.

Getting a hot pink PSP saved me £50 and I'm more than okay with that. It has a big fat black rear end, though, since the battery needed a wider cover.

It's great I was buying pre-owned from HMV and they had all these offers for games with it, I just looked the guy in the eye and politely asked "Can I buy it without a bundle of sorts?" Boom! £15ish saved!

Getting in good with your local store manager is always helpful if you're buying older consoles, or even just to get around bundles in general. I'm still mad that the Street came out so late in the PSP's life cycle that no-one bothered to pick it up, and that I couldn't really justify a second PSP out of the blue. That thing was amazing, chunky and non-slip and perfectly shaped. If they hadn't killed the online capability from it I'd get one in an instant.

The only thing they took down is the storefront. The download list itself still works fine on PSPs.

By the time a platform becomes unavailable digitally and hard to find in stores, emulation is usually caught up. PSP emulation is pretty much there and PS3 emulation has reached the point they have retail games loading. The only system it hasn't happened for is the original Xbox. Not to mention some big name games are still coming soon like Persona 5 It's strange to think about, but the base PSP architecture is coming up on 10 years in December. We had no qualms using the system to play GBA, NES, and SNES games which were just as old at the time.

When you have a ROM in physical form, whether optical or solid state, it's fairly straightforward to get the bits off the media and run with it. Any encryption or obfuscation will be light since the same game has to work the same way on every console sold. Digital distribution, on the other hand, can make it much harder to recover a plaintext ROM from the downloaded file if they've done something cute with PKI or another scheme to curb piracy.
