Has anyone heard anything on the supposed Bulldozer motherboards that'll be backwards compatible with AM3 cpus? I'm looking to build a VM server on the cheap and it'd be awesome if I can get a Bulldozer motherboard and a cheap Athlon X4 or some such now and just upgrade it a year or so down the line.

http://www.computerbase.de/news/hardware/mainboards/amd-systeme/2011/maerz/erste-amd-bulldozer-mainboards-verfuegbar/ leads to http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=890GM%20Pro3%20R2.0&cat=Specifications which only has a "supports 8-core CPUs" as a hint on bulldozer support.
Doing a http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&q=site%3Aasrock.com+am3%2B&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq= leads to a few PDFs specifically speaking of AM3+ socket: Pro3 R2.0 (11.800 yen/$145), Extreme3 R2.0, Deluxe5, ...

If the boards are popping up in japan they should start appearing up soon in the rest of the world.

This is a thing with slides on Kaveri's paper launch. Two A10s and one A8 in February. Various reports of just how much performance (IPC, HPC, whatever) improves are still...all over the place.

No, just AM5. AM4's going to be re-used until 2020, remember?

Actually, I have serious doubts that DDR5 will actually addreess anything either, CAS latency numbers keep ballooning, and I don't remember if DDR5 was doing anything to address that.

CAS latency in wall clock time is always the same. IIRC it has decreased slightly but steadily since DDR1
