This is legit what Festool stuff is made for. Router + track for dados and tracksaw + MFT for breaking down sheet goods. You definitely don't have to buy actual Festool. Pretty much all their stuff can be replicated through DIY jigs with a slight clunkiness and weight sacrifice. If you use a dado stack to cut tenons you can do that with a router+ fence or router table, or just make the switch to loose tenon joinery (which again a few router jigs do well).

I had a 6” Rigid that was okay. Kinda top heavy (and heavy in general) and really only useful on horizontal flat surfaces. It was too heavy to use vertically one handed, and even two handed it would really wear you out. A 6” is quite a bit faster if you’re doin a a bunch of table tops or something, but that’s really the only difference. It doesn’t seem like a big difference but because of math and stuff a 6” sander has significantly more surface area than a 5” and sands waaay faster. You definitely don’t need anything bigger than 6” and I think it would be hard to control or find disks for. They also don’t work that much faster with coarse grits? Like if heavy stock removal is the goal, I wouldn’t say they do that any faster than a 5” because the increased surface area is kinda working against you there. A belt sander is a better option for that.

I have an electric Mirka 6” (actually they make a 5” pad for it too) and it’s the fuckin tits but it’s also like $700. Light, fast, great dust collection, just perfect. Almost makes sanding fun. It’s the same shape as a pneumatic one and I definitely prefer that shape, especially if I’m using it for long periods of sanding vertical surfaces. If you have a large enough compressor (sanders suck a lot of air, like 15cfm), they make a pneumatic version that’s significantly cheaper. I just got the electric one because I wanted to be able to take it to job sites if needed.

I have a couple of ecoflows and their fans are stupidly loud. I don't know how they compare to other brands but it's quite annoying when the fan kicks on. I'm using one in the bedroom as a battery backup for our internet modem and despite being plugged in at all times they kick the fan on once per day for a couple of minutes for some reason. Which is rather irritating when trying to sleep.

I did find on google some people have managed to crack them open and swap the fan with something quieter that actually provides higher airflow but I haven't worked up the bravery to try it.

I've got them up to date I think and they are still noisy. Maybe it is toned down in use though. We don't have power outages that often so I don't have a chance to hear them that often other than the weird daily fan that runs in the bedroom

Functional, yes. High-strength, no. It's supposed to be a lock/latch for the front of a box that will store records. It's not the kind of thing meant to be moved around but I'll be adding trunk handles to the sides just in case. Behold a .pptx mockup:

A Wizard of Goatse
Dec 14, 2014

I've definitely seen marine latches that look approximately like that, but you may have to content yourself with one that's a couple inches across or so, and that particular design is not going to latch an outward swinging door very well, it's designed to stop things pulling apart linearly. Round is easy, you could find something like a round cam latch without too much trouble, just depends how fussy you are about what it looks like

Don't worry you can spend $20 MORE to get... the same thing? This appears to be the one which actually includes the remote ("-IR-" in the part) I guess?

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Feit-El...IR-MM/319418863

It's probably still what I'm putting in my garage because I don't know what else to buy, and it claims to work without the remote. Given right now my garage is lit by two separate fluorescent fixtures, one of which is hooked to an extension cord. Which is closest to the light switch. Because... ???

Not a bad idea! I'll swing by the antique mall that's closing down, there may be something interesting there. And for less than the ridiculous prices they've demanded for years.

Yeah, the latching part of it really needs to be behind the door to do its job. I suppose I could always hide some magnets in the panels to add holding strength.

The look is fairly important since I'm going for an occult/doom metal thing with the box. But thanks for the suggestion -- I'll look into the cam latch category, who knows what's out there.

Yes that’s the newer version with a motion detector that eventually shuts them off after a while of no motion. They’re “fine”, in that they shut off when someone on my household forgets to switch off the garage lights at the switch, but they do dim after a period of no motion when I’m at the other end of the garage, and then I have to walk over and wave my hands to get them to go back to full power in the area I’m not working. I don’t ever use the remotes, but you can tweak the time out. If you want something that stays on forever, this isn’t it. I have 4 strung together, and they each operate independently, so it’s not like the whole garage goes dim at the same time.
