Wow, didn't realise throwing in the towel was illegal in the UFC. Is this to avoid corruption or some other reason?

I quite like the concept, reminds of Roman days (they did it Roman days yeah?)

Stuff you can watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNMZ8BetdSo

http://www.thereem.com/ - An online doc on that follows noted title belt collector and sasmma(pspmma?) favorite Alistair Overeem around for a year. It gives a good insight into the workings of promotion and training. also has an awesome soundtrack.

http://www.ultimatefighter.com/ - Every episode of every season + the finales. You might like it you might not. who knows?

fighttime.net/ - links to a whole bunch of fights after they are broadcast, good if you want to watch Japanese mma but also like to sleep normal hours.

Thanks for this thread - tons of great information. Is Gina Carano still fighting or did she go into the acting thing full time? She was the only reason I saw to have an interest in Strikeforce.

MMA gifs are entertaining and a thread for them would definitely be great.

throwing in the towel is also illegal in boxing. if you throw in the towel, you lose the fight.

I think they mean literally throwing a towel into the ring. You can still quit whenever (BJ Penn did it in between rounds when he fought GSP).

No.

The greatest moment in my life was realizing that I didn't need a belt to be happy.

Enjoying MMA doesn't take a huge investment because any two fighters who "go for it" will put on a good show. I've been watching for two years and I still see plenty of names I don't recognize at all (mostly in the Japanese promotions). It takes time to learn the different disciplines (wrestling, jiu jitsu, judo, the forgotten art karate) to truly appreciate the "battle" that goes on between fighters but you can enjoy any fights today without knowing much.

Speaking of disciplines RobBorer, not sure if you want to deal with the hassle of doing this but it might be cool to explain some of the major fighting disciplines/styles one will see in MMA. Nothing too thorough, but maybe pick the best fighter that represents their martial art and give some details about it.

Do a little section about "grinders" and show Jon Fitch then ask people to wait 15 minutes before continuing on to the next fighting style.

I see from the wikipedia link in the OP that they were the ones that were basically building around Kimbo and he got knocked out by that guy with the pink hair and then the scandal surrounding the rest of it. I think I remember seeing a video of that around the time it happened and remembered Kimbo being the guy from the backyard fight videos. It was pretty shocking to someone like me who didn't know the ins and outs of MMA and how terrible of a fighter Kimbo would be once put up against trained athletes. After how high Kimbo was hyped it seemed pretty crazy.
