The sunk-cost fallacy is a good explanation of why we buy things without necessarily intending to use it, on account of a perceived "loss" if we don't immediately jump on a discount. I bought games like Mass Effect and the Quake pack and never touched either. I'm guilty of this too. I probably will never get around to actually playing L4D, either.
