gawrsh do you think any women will be there

We are all photographers now. And being that we are all big fat photo nerds, we probably feel a burning desire to carry a camera around with us 24/7. And not just some crappy cell phone camera, neither, but a proper camera!

May I introduce you, fellow pathetic photo nerd, to the 35mm point & shoot?

Yes, the 35mm point and shoot. The humble and once ubiquitous genre of cameras that are always a nice addition to a photographer's arsenal.

But wait! I've already fashioned an impenetrable exosuit of Leica M7s and RZ67s!! Why do I need a chintzy goofball hipster camera??

Many of us probably already have quite respectable camera collection as is. Rare and expensive. Japanese and German. Why would we ever want to use anything else? The answer is because they are clunky and impractical. We all know the huge burden of walking around with a massive medium format camera all day. And unfortunately, as is the case in most of the world most of the time, the sun sets eventually. And no one wants to be caught at night with a huge and unwieldy medium format or expensive SLR system with the wrong film, or having to work with an antiquated flash/metering system.

Heh! You're just a pathetic weakling! I carry my 16x20 around all day. I run in marathons with it. Clearly you must be a Holga user

Even if you DO have a system for shooting medium/large format reliably at night, even if it doesn't bother you to carry around your body + lenses all day and night, even if you are some sort of superhuman freak who can reload his camera in seconds flat, there are distinct advantages to a cheap but solid camera:

They are less expensive, so you don't care about them as much. They are quiet, discrete, and can be hand held even on say, a roller coaster. They can be everywhere you are without anyone noticing. Real life has no patience for photography nerds. Sometimes you are at a concert and get swept up into a moshpit. Sometimes there is a brawl outside your local bar. Sometimes the cops are arresting hundreds of people in your neighborhood. Sometimes crazy poo poo happens, and you just need a solid, cheap camera that can take damage and keep on on trucking, or even be outright broken with nary a tear shed.

Blah blah blah! Shut the gently caress up you Terry Richardson wannabe. We are real photographers here

Haven't convinced you yet? Well, actually, some of them are actually really nice cameras believe it or not:

The Leica Minilux. Can you own a Leica camera with an 40mm f/2.4 lens for under $400? Yes, yes you can. Solid camera. I learned the hard way that it's prone to expensive shutter failures though.

The Yashica T4. The classic. Should not cost you more than $150. Even then it's overpriced. Still a loving drat good camera. Sturdy, sharpass Carl Zeiss 35mm f/3.5 lens. Very simple features. The t3 and T4 are basically the same. The T4s is weatherproofed for the ultimate in hardcore "just-try-to-break-this-camera"-ness. I had this camera for a summer and a half and I lost it in a cab and regret that to this day. Sturdy. Reliable. Beautiful. Small. Cheap. Yes, Terry Richardson uses one.

The Olympus Stylus Epic. a 35mm f/2.8 in a very-interesting looking form should not cost you any more then $60, if eBay is any indication. Easy to find, great compact little system in a cool form for the price of a new video game. And there's not even any good games out anyways. Go buy an Olympus Stylus Epic.

These have a wildly varying price. Anywhere from $250-ish to well into the upper $600s for some of the rarer/weirder limited editions and what not. The widest lens yet though, with a 28mm f/2.8, and of course, sharp and badass looking.

:siren: warning: camera porn incoming :siren:

The Contax T3. With a Sonnar 35mm f/2.8 and that insane matte black finish, this is one boner-inducing camera. Too bad it's easily $600 and up

The Minolta TC-1. Probably the weirdest looking lens I've ever seen, but also one of the best ever made for a compact. $650 for this camera is a loving bargain. Don't even bother trying to buy this one. I pretty much only put it here so we can all ogle the bizarre lens. That tiny little thing is a 28mm f/3.5!!

Alright, this one is more of a "compact 35" and less of a "point and shoot" because the lens doesn't retract. BUT it's spectacularly rare and got a nice lens and I just got on one on eBay for $200, the approximate cost of fixing my Leica Minilux's now-dead shutter!! :neckbeard:

Anyways, long story short, while 35mm P&S were once ubiquitous and synonymous with taking pictures, much as cameraphones are now, they've fallen by the wayside but are still drat good, occasionally cheap, sturdy, reliable cameras that will round out your photographic bases quite nicely. They can be where other cameras can't.

Discuss your favorite 35mm P&S here, or use this to post camera porn so good we can literally jerk off to it!!

Edit: Compact 35s!

So what IS the difference between a P&S and a compact 35 exactly? The definition of a

quote:

"Point and shoot" is "A point-and-shoot camera, also called a compact camera, is a still camera designed primarily for simple operation. Most use focus free lenses or autofocus for focusing, automatic systems for setting the exposure options, and have flash units built in."

So, anything with more complex operation, such as custom exposure/aperture settings etc, with a shoe instead of a built in flash, manual winding/rewinding and manual focus/non retracting lens in a small form factor is what will hereby be referred to as a "compact 35"

The Olympus RC! Gorgeous Zuiko 2.8 lens and a sexy rangefinder, prices seem to vary wildly but I'd say if you pay anything above $80-90 you've overpaid significantly. Kind of narrow at 42mm.

Canon G-III 17! A wildly popular Canon camera from the 80s, should be incredibly easy to find, has a good meter (a spot meter, I believe) and should only run you about $20 on eBay. $40 max. f/1.7 lens!! 40mm

Yashica Electro 35CC! Another solid camera from Yashica with a f/1.8 35mm lens. Unfortunately a little harder to find and, like all Yashica 35mm's apparently, disgustingly overpriced at around $350 for the only eBay sale I could find. If you just search "Yashica Electro 35" you will find other cameras from that series but as they are not TRUE compacts I will exclude them. They're solid cheap 35mms though, around $20-50 a piece.

The Minox 35mm. A camera only a mother could love. Cheap, plastic body (all the others are metal), wretched, ugly, horrid look, but regrettably a fine lens and overall good system at around $20-40 on eBay means I should include it. Check the barf-inducing flash/body combo:

:barf:

Just to make up for the Minox, check this bad boy out:

The Rollei 35! Lots of fancy knobs and doodads on the front! Steel! Only f/3.5 40mm though, and with all sorts of weird special editions floating around it may be hard to snatch a bargain. I'd say around $40-120 for this weirdo.

Petri COlor 35! Classy! Cheap ($20). Uses weird rear end batteries! That wouldn't be a problem except this one is fully automatic save for aperture/ISO knobs on top.

The dreadfully sexy voigtlander VF135. Unfortunately, I could not even find a single on on eBay. You'd probably have more luck with the VF101/general Voigtlander 35mm's (non-compacts)

That's about it, folks! Some warnings for you guys firing up your PayPals and eBays:

:siren: THESE ARE OLD, CRANKY CAMERAS THAT USE FUNKY BATTERIES :siren:

quote:

size 675 zinc-air hearing aid batteries are a direct replacement for size 675 mercury cells and that they last about two to three weeks once opened so keep a pack in your camera bag

They were designed for a specific purpose (mainly to unseat the Leica CL, but other than that, to be discrete, VERY QUIET compact, sharp, fast, metal 35mms to have on you at all times).

:siren: FOR MOST PEOPLE READING THIS THREAD A 35MM POINT AND SHOOT WILL SERVICE YOUR NEEDS JUST AS WELL AS, IF NOT BETTER THAN THE CAMERAS LISTED ABOVE, AND MORE RELIABLY AT THAT :siren:

there is no need to buy a fancy-shmancy Russian Leica replacement with an ultrafast lens if you're presently just going to use it to take cool snapshots of your friends and such. Or if you want a simple 35mm to replace/compliment your main system. They ARE great cameras, but don't buy something you don't really need. Or aren't ready for!

I have found a "Canon eos rebel k2 35mm" on craigslist for $40, it seems like a great deal, but I don't know enough about the camera, or photography in general to make a wise decision. I know it takes film, and I would have to get it developed, and that's about the extent of my knowledge. Is there anything else I should know before buying? Is this a lovely camera? Is this deal as great as I think it is?
Really any thoughts at all would be appreciated.

Also, this is a great loving deal. You should jump on that deal ASAP. That camera + a nice lens can easily cost $200 and up, so even if you just get tired of it in a few weeks and resell it, it's still a good move on your part.

Also, photography is pretty much the tits.

Frankly, as that camera is a rather modern SLR, you may be overwhelmed, but I learned on a Canon 30D as my first camera so you should have no trouble picking it up as long as you keep on shooting and take your camera with you everywhere. It's ironic that you would post this in a point and shoot thread as that would probably suit you much better, but go for it.

Hey guys. So my Konica Auto S3 just came in the mail and I have to say it is one of the nicest cameras I've ever seen, let alone owned. That being said, it has no battery, and the battery it uses is banned because of mercury content. It's not unusable, but it means the excellent meter is unusable and the f/stop is left wide open at f/1.8.

looked at replacing it, they run upwards of $400 on ebay cause they were limited edition (20k worldwide), so that's not gonna happen. fortunately they were essentially the same as the stylus epic (the ecru was the proof-of-concept that led to the epic), and those are cheaper and with a faster lens, but not as dooooooooooope.

I'd rather not spend too much on this as film and developing is already going to be a bitch and I travel a lot and don't want to get it destroyed.

The Konica Auto S3 is not a point and shoot but rather a part of a different family of cameras known as Compact 35mm/compact RF, it was essentially designed to compete with Leica's Leica CL. While the Konica Auto S3 is an exceptional camera and a blast to use (with a really sick rangefinder), it is certainly not the only Compact 35 RF in the world, much as the XA2 is not the only point and shoot. The main difference being there's an Olympus XA2 in every corner of the globe for $60 or less, the Konica Auto S3 is actually somewhat rare and will typically go for $200 or more. Seeing as there's been a real interest in this thread in good compact 35s, i'll probably expand the OP to cover those in more detail in the coming week. That being said, the Konica IS a really nice system, if not for the weird battery issues (it uses obsolete and illegal mercury batteries), is freakishly tiny, and due to its rarity, you will probably have to buy another S3 for parts if you want it repaired.

I used my slightly dinged up Canon 430EX, a brand new flash. You can almost always use a new flash with old cameras, and the Konica Auto S3 meters for both flash AND ambient light (check the grain in the second picture), so it'd be a shame to use it WITHOUT a flash at night. Then again, the flash is easily 2-3x the size of the actual camera and I had to partially advance the frame just to get the winder out of the way enough to put on/remove the flash so I don't know.

Are there any other cameras as sharp and reliable as this guy? With a built in flash, preferably. The T4 is nice but I'm looking for something that's a bit of a step up.
