My four favorite RPG's ever have to be Dragon Warrior I, II, III, and IV. I never got the cursed necklace in the NES version of DWI. I've probably played through all of the Nintendo versions more than half a dozen times each.

The morning I beat the Dragonlord in DWI, I was probably 7 or 8, I ran upstairs to wake my friend, who stayed the night, telling him all about it and how excited I was. He was one of those types that could sleep all day if they didn't have a game to play. I was on a mission...to kill the Dragonlord!

Gamestop. You'll need to check in-store availability and hope you get lucky because you can't get it through the website anymore. I mean, you can get it on eBay but it's going to be $50+ after shipping, while if you get lucky with a local Gamestop it's $34.99 + tax.

Just... Don't try to get the guide.

So far I've only seen one minigame in Dq6, and it didn't have any prizes for winning...maybe later in the game it will. I'm only 3 hours in.

Apparently the head guy wanted to add some new stuff in to the DS versions. I can't remember what DQIV got (maybe monster arena?), DQV got an extra bride and DQVI gets...curling.

One of these things is not like the others.

Not only that, but you actually meet Nera and Debora as a child, at least for a bit, meaning that it isn't completely out of left field to choose either of them for a bride now. Bianca's life still ends up sucking, but they made the bride thing an actual choice you have to think about, now. Especially with the party talk feature.

Even if you find used copies at Gamestop they're something like $35. Its a complete shame that it got such a limited release due to DQIV selling poorly, especially since both games are excellent. I'm pretty happy that IX has been pretty popular here, it can only mean good things for the franchise.

They removed nearly all of the guilt trip the SFC original laid on you if you didn’t pick Bianca, too. Especially the part with Bianca’s father dying.

Nah, not really. There's some homages to prior games, but the Zenithian triology has less obvious connections between the games than the Loto trilogy did.

You should still play 4 and 5 anyway though. Because they're fun.

Then I wandered into a bumfuck Kmart and there were two copies sitting in a rack with clearance PS3 games. I probably wouldn't have even looked in the DS section on that trip because I was in a hurry. What luck :unsmith:

If you can stand the slight de-evolution back to 4, then...I would actually say that IS the order to play them in. Once you get to the end of 5, you'll see what I mean.

It's so nice to have a casino again after DQIX didn't have one.

Or maybe it's a bad thing. I already cleared out the gift shop, so maybe I should stop playing slots now.

It looks like the remake still has that obtuse bit where You have to wear the Noble Garb to get into Somnia Castle. Sure there's an NPC who basically tells you to do that, but it's still a non-intuitive solution since there aren't really any other times in the series that your equipment affects story progression. I wonder how many first-time players will get stuck there.

Since, as far as I know, the PSX version was not released in the US so it was more like a "If we haven't seen it it's new to us!" kind of thing.

The thing I was missing was the whole "buy noble garments" part, but I managed to figure it out after a while longer. I was loathe to spend money on the rags, but I eventually did, gained entrance to Somnia and all was good. From there, I breezed the next few parts without consequence, and now I'm at the part where I have to go to Murdock's (?) cave.

I just got Ashlynn in my party and Ra's mirror and the rest of my team is around level 15. Nothing had been a challenge up until I reached this cave, and now suddenly I'm not just outclassed, I'm way outclassed by the mobs here.

Did I skip some parts of the story or side quests or something that are supposed to buff me up before I attempt this?

I would say that going around and collecting the exact same equipment for similar purposes counts as a fairly obvious connection.

Yes, the equipment you collect toward the end of DQ6 is the Zenithian equipment, but renamed to match different owners the equipment had throughout the history of that particular world.

Nope, the game just takes a small leap in difficulty at this point. There's a few spots with metal slimes available for quickly grinding out a couple of levels. I find it helps to take the cave in two trips - one to poke around for treasure, and the second to make a straight run for the boss. Since you won't be facing the boss on the first run, the only MP you need to conserve is for Evac to get you out.

I remember the first time I played a Dragon Quest game (Dragon Warrior VII, to be exact, my mom rented it for me one day) and loved it. I never got far into it though. Eventually I picked up the Gameboy Colour versions of I and II and beat both of those (and eventually did a Let's Play of the first one).

That would be incredibly massive and probably not worth the effort. Better to just use the engine developed for DQ4DS-6DS, spruce it up for the 3DS—can we get a little anti-aliasing?—and import VII’s art assets to that enhanced engine. Hell, VII is the inspiration for IVDS-VIDS anyway.

Now, VIII… that demands the latest in HD cel shading. The goal should be to trump those new Dragonball Z games.

Well, DQ5 certainly took a dark turn. Watching Pankraz beaten in-battle was strangely moving. Normally a game would just kill off a character in cinematic fashion but no, you have to watch this dude suffer pathetic amounts of damage slowly over the course of 10 or so turns before he's obliterated. He loving takes it like a man, too.
