I keep losing flat out and never make anything in the slots. Poker I make slightly more, but since I don't really know how to play Poker I lose there too...

I have terrible luck at the slots too. I had better luck at Poker, but only later in the game (J version) when the Double-Up didn't suck.

In other news, time to have some fun with classes. Carver is going to be a fabulous dancer :gay:

I wouldnt mind picking one up for someone when I go get DQ6 one of these days.

The key to winning in DQ casinos is to remember that, thanks to the ability to save and reset, you essentially have infinite wealth. As long as you don't save after blowing your seed money, you can just reset and blow it all again on risky high-yield bets, e.g. the 100 token slot machine. It'll probably take hours of mind-numbing repetition to see results, but it's all worth it when even a low-multiplier win returns a decent amount of tokens.

Poker should be avoided at all costs, though, because I swear the Double Up is rigged. That or I have the worst luck in the world.

If you've ever played on an emulator and messed with saved states, yeah, it kinda is. At certain points anyway. There have been times when I chose high, lost then chose low and got a higher card. Those situations are common enough to be annoying, but not a serious game killer.

I will burn my dread.

I just got to the point in DQV DS that I van recruit monsters in my party (and am going after the lion monster who is terrorizing the local town). I've had one monster total try to join me, and he is only level four. It's Hell trying to level him myself, will dropping him off at the monster babysitter be more effective?

I had pretty good luck with the slots when I went for the riches. I started with a 2000 gold bankroll (100 chips) and just maxed the cheapest slot until I had roughly 1,200 chips. From there, I moved up to the next slot machine at max bet until I hit ~10K, and from there I spun the richest slot until I hit several 30,000 jackpots (which is only middling on the pay scale for the best slot machine.)

I did have to reload once after losing my bankroll on the middle slots, so that's cheating but whatever. It could have been worse/taken longer.

Seriously what is up with him? the only one who can do any significant damage to him is carver with knuckle sandwich. Not to mention he loves using icy breath and lightning in the same turn.

To be honest I'm just guessing here, but this was a helpful tip for me to beating him for the Snes fan translation version.

Take your priest friend's staff and give it to someone else. It's an infinite-use healing item so the priest can use his MP healing while someone else uses the staff. If Carver has the fire claw, take it off of him and give it to whoever didn't receive the staff. It's usable as an item to cast Blazemore / Frizzle, which did damage comparable to the punch. Abusing the staff and claw this way will effectively double the amount of damage and healing you have available.

Actually, the way you phrased it, I expected something horrible typical of IGN. That was in fact pretty tame and mostly honest. Not everyone is going to enjoy DQVI and it's in fact not as good as DQV, which is what the reviewer based its score on.

First, DQ5 was given an 8.9. DQ6 is not 1.9 points worse than DQ5.

Second, DQ5 and 6 are roughly equivalent in quality in my view. 5 has an overall better plot, 6 has a better battle system and has more of an adventurous feeling. Even if one doesn’t think 6 is as good as 5, it’s not 1.9 points worse.

Lastly, the DQ6 review is about how it’s an old JRPG and how the reviewer doesn’t have time to play perceived unimportant JRPGs. The implication is that he’s dismissing some obscure title for not being flashy enough.

Unless they changed something drastically in the DS version, 6 has the best gameplay in the whole series. It ends up being about if you genuinely like RPG gameplay or not; if you don't particularly like RPGs you will without a doubt hate 6. If you trudge through them because you like the way they present stories, you might be a little disappointed. If you are an old school RPG enthusiast and like RPGs because you like to play RPGs (quite honestly very few people who grew up with more modern games are) then 6 has the best take on the old system. It is grindy, but not too grindy like 7. You have more customization than anything by 7, which leads to the most variations on gameplay. Most of the game is very challenging and hard to cheese or overpower through, and the fact that the customization is open-ended could make for some interesting handicapped playthroughs. The length is also very appropriate, and there is a fair amount of hidden and post game stuff to do.

So basically anyone who gives this game a mediocre or bad review simply has straight up disdain for classic style console RPGs.

IGN's reviews of "niche" games are terrible because they usually stick someone who absolutely hates the genre to review the game. I'll never forget their God Hand review which was 2 pages of "This game is too oldschool and hard to be enjoyed by anyone."

If you die while wearing it, it casts the spell Kamikazee, which attempts to (and usually succeeds at) instakill all opponents. Older games may have called the spell Sacrifice, if that helps.

There isn't any WIFI capability or Deborah. The music is, however, orchestrated and fantastic. Translation-wise it has been localized, but in a different manner than how DQ5 DS was localized.

On a different note, does anyone know if Nintendo, GameStop, or Best Buy will be having DQ6 events like they did for DQ9? I know that Suite Dreams has a couple of secrets in it that require you to share dreamcards, and I don't have a subway ride to do that with or anything.

Yeah, he's gone. If you don't tell him the truth and then get the seeds he joins your party. I didn't really like him that much, his only unique skill is turning into a monster which makes him uncontrollable for the rest of the battle. He's a physical fighter, but doesn't get any unique skills like Carver so I benched him after a couple of fights.

I've done a lot. I didn't realize the Abbey was open for a while after beating Murdaw, so I've progressed through a a few parts of the game before starting to master any classes. Now the hero and Carver are mid-20s and everybody in the party has one fully mastered class under their belts.

The last task I accomplished was escorting some sailor's mer-girlfriend back home, and now I think I'm supposed to patrol the undersea or something, but I'm not currently interested in doing that if there's more to see above ground.

Between the Flying Bed, Sea Vessel and Floating Island I have managed to explore most of both maps, but now I want to find another casino and none are showing up. I've read that two more available, but not where... Is there one I can go to that I should be able to reach already?

Also, are there good places to buy gear at this stage? I've got cash and I haven't upgraded my equipment in what feels like ages.

Finally, am I missing any recruits? I currently have Carver, Ashlynn, Millie, Nevan, Amos and Goowain. It seems like I should have come across more - and didn't I read something about slimes joining the party?

For where you are plot-wise, just go exploring. There's lots of great free gear scattered throughout the world that you can get now. There's also many mini medals available you can trade in for nice stuff.

Look in every well you come across. Good things hide in wells... once you kill the bad things that pop out of them, at any rate. Save before diving into some on the world map, though... things get pretty hairy down one of the wells.

Don't get your hopes up. He's the cliche white-haired rear end in a top hat swordsman who suddenly becomes a weakling the moment he joins you. (See Dias, Star Ocean 2.)

To be a little more specific, Terry has no unique abilities. He starts as a rank one gladiator with warrior and martial artist mastered. By the time you get him you'll probably have more job progression than that. Also you'll have better gear, and enough 0 mp skills that the sunderbolt sword won't matter much.

But Terry is necessary to acquire one of the game's secret characters.
