I've only ever played clear through 7, which I somehow finished 3 times in high school, but never managed to get into the bonus dungeons. It was decently fun, but I no longer have patience for that kind of grind unless I'm playing at many times normal speed, which makes menu jockeying for whistle rather difficult. I've gotten a decent start on most of the others, but always wind up getting distracted and playing something else. 8 came around during my little crisis around the freshman year of college where suddenly I had access to everything I ever thought I wanted to play and had a backlog of rpgs that I'm not sure would have been feasible to finish in a human lifetime. dis astranagant fucked around with this message at 08:18 on Feb 16, 2011 |

Port 7 and halve or quarter the amount of battles needed to level classes and we're in business. Maybe double how much xp and gold you get, too.

mystery at hog island posted:Yeah I did hear it was a grindfest even by DQ standards. Ease up on the grinding a bit and make it like the DS ports of the Zenithia trilogy and we're in business. TAKE MY MONEY, SQUEENIX. One specific example of DQ7's grindiness: the fastest way to get into the Hero class (the all-rounder advanced class the game hypes up in several places, the requirements of which are mastering any 3 intermediate or advanced classes) requires you to master the warrior, fighter, cleric, paladin, dragoon and godhand classes (and godhand has better skills anyway). That takes 1075 battles (more if you accidentally hit an area's level cap on the way up, which prevents you from leveling classes there) plus another 200 to master it. The summoner class takes 1435 to get into and another 250 to master. Note that both of those assume you started right out going straight for those classes. Then there's the monster classes, which require a monster heart to get into (megarare drops (a couple can only be gotten this way and are needed for the top end classes) or hours of playing lucky panel in the casino) and then have their own hierarchy to go through to get the best ones, culminating in platking, which is basically having a top end metal slime on your team.

J posted:It's been a long time since I played through DQ7 but I don't remember that being a problem at all really. Also way later on there is a slime forest where you can seriously fight easy slimes to grind out all the jobs you want, so you don't have to worry about screwing yourself over by being too high level in that regard at all. Plus you just about have to be leveled up a bit to survive Dharma, since the game really throws your rear end in the fire before giving you the class system.

No need for the "in my opinion", it's a pretty common one. YsF owns and anyone who hasn't played it is doing themselves a great disservice.
