Yes, a Dragon Quest megathreaddd.

I remember the first time I played a Dragon Quest game (Dragon Warrior VII, to be exact, my mom rented it for me one day) and loved it. I never got far into it though. Eventually I picked up the Gameboy Colour versions of I and II and beat both of those (and eventually did a Let's Play of the first one).

I also have VIII and IX but I've only beaten the former.

I've never played III, IV, V, or VI; does that make me a terrible person?

i just got a DS. should i play 4,5,6 or 9? I've played 8 for the PS2 but no other game from the series...

Play all of them.

9's got the whole skill point distribution thing 8 had but it also has lots of classes. I have 6 too but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

I don't get why Square-Enix thinks they need to make one of the main games in the series an MMO. I know there's not necessarily much continuity between Dragon Quest games but they could just have easily made a Dragon Quest MMO its own separate spinoff instead of the official tenth game.

Oh wait, Final Fantasy XI and XIV. :eng99:

Dragon Quest is my favourite series of games but it really doesn't instill any sort of confidence in me that it's being made into an MMO, AND being internally developed by Square-Enix. This coming off the horrible mess that was FFXIV.

At least we still have Joker 2 on the horizon. :unsmith:

Okay, I'm gonna do that video game franchise role call that some people do.

  • I: Beat the NES and GBC versions, LPed it. One of my favourites, I play it once a year.
  • II: Beat the GBC version. Didn't like it very much due to the endgame fetch quest extravaganza.
  • III: Never got to play it.
  • IV: Beat the first chapter of the DS version, really need to get back to it.
  • V: Still trying to find a cheap copy of it.
  • VI: I own the DS version but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.
  • VII: First DQ game I played (yes even before the first one on the NES!). Never beat it but it's probably my favourite due to the darker setting. Wish I could find a copy of it that isn't $100+.
  • VIII: Beat it. Definitely one of the best. Need to do the post-game content.
  • IX: Beat the main story. Been meaning to do the post-game stuff but... eh. Disappointed there was no casino.
  • X: I'm really leery on how this game's gonna turn out. All I can do is hope and pray.

Oh yeah, anyone ever play any of those Torneko spinoffs? (Did those even come out in the US?)

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D came out a week ago in Japan and it's already sold over 500,000 copies!

On that subject though, I noticed a complete lack of Dragon Quest in this year's E3. Are we getting Terry's Wonderland? What about the new Rocket Slime game that's already been out since November in Japan? Are any of those games heading our way? :(

Dragon Quest VII is bound for 3DS in February in Japan.

Oh God yes this is the best news. :allears: Dragon Quest VII was the one that introduced me to this lovely series. I just hope we actually get a release for it here in the States (WHERE IS ROCKET SLIME 3 AND TERRY'S WONDERLAND?)

To no one's surprise, nothing related to Dragon Quest was announced during today's Nintendo Direct. :(

Lots of people could not stand the way the DS Dragon Quest localizations used accents all over the place. They are wrong, but I fear they outnumber us, so we've got to stick together.

I've never understood the dislike towards the accents. I thought they were a nice addition to the games.

For all we know, they could consider iOS and Android devices to be home consoles now.

Oh, whoops. I guess I should have actually read the article.

Can someone explain to me why DQ7 is so revered? I have the 3DS version, and sure, the self contained islands and stories are fun, but the battle system and backtracking are just boring and tedious.

At least for me, Dragon Quest VII was the first one I played, so it has a special place in my heart. I really liked the general atmosphere of the game, but I never got very far (because I was bad at RPGs at the time) so I'd love to be able to play it again. Unfortunately, if I wanted to do that currently I'd either have to track down a working copy of the game for PS1 (which is ridiculously expensive) or learn how to speak Japanese and import both the game and a Japanese 3DS.
