Finished book one of the Crippled God last night. Probably already covered but I've been avoiding spoilers: - So, is Quick Ben somehow related directly to Mother Dark? Probably explained later but seriously a pretty big wtf. - What is the deal with Ruthan Gudd? He's mentioned a few times in DoD but I don't remember him from bonehunters or reapers gale, or the ICE books. Came over from Fist clearly, but I don't recall his introduction at all. - Anyone notice that the Assail Calm is the one Karsa freed in book 4? Awesome.

Finished tCG this weekend. It was a good climax and ending for the series, I thought. a little too many face crumplings in response to an act of compassion or whatever, but the action didn't disappoint. Edit: I could, but mine smells of smoke

Cool map! Here's cover art for the next Esslemont novel. Hopefully we get an updated blurb. The last one was... pretty bad. I'm looking forward to the PSPublishing cover art too. Hopefully they'll keep the same artist and nautical theme!

So they did rewrite the blurb. Now this is more like it!Orb, Sceptre, Throne posted:Drujhistan, city of dreams, city of blue flames, is peaceful at last; its citizens free to return to politicking, bickering, trading and, above all, enjoying the good things in life. Yet there are those who will not allow the past to remain buried. A scholar digging in the plains stumbles across an ancient sealed vault. The merchant Humble Measure schemes to drive out the remaining Malazan invaders. And the surviving agents of a long-lost power are stirring, for they sense change and so, opportunity. While, as ever at the centre of everything, a thief in a red waistcoat and of rotund proportions walks the streets, juggling in one hand custard pastries, and in the other the fate of the city itself.

Dee-vairss Btw when I posted the new blurb for the upcoming ice novel, it's because the limited edition is on preorder at pspublishing. RotCG was 3 months early there and this one might be early there too, if you need a malazan fix. Edit: £95 Fuzzy Mammal fucked around with this message at 03:54 on Sep 28, 2011 |

I tried reading the Mistborn novels last week and had to give up. The action was so stilted and the characters were so shallow. I think erikson has kinda ruined the genre for me now. Next Ice novel comes out in 4 weeks!!!

The Ninth Layer posted:Just finished Reaper's Gale. Trull!!! That was the worst death of the series for me so far; when Coltaine and Whiskeyjack died I was crushed, but Trull dying came out of nowhere and really hit me hard. He was one of the most likable characters of the series yet, and his way of dying was heartbreaking. Leaving his newly found love to reconcile with Rhulad, only to get stabbed in the back after finding his brother dead... Such a brutal, meaningless death for a great character. I really hope the Errant gets his just desserts, although I'd be surprised if this series delivered that sort of karma. Yeah, that was a real sucker punch. I love that book. And you have the correct ordering IMO.

New interview with SE on Tor.com. Some very interesting stuff:Erikson posted:This is probably a good opportunity to advise potential readers of the Kharkanas trilogy: there will be a shift in style going on, and accordingly if you expect a seamless continuity of style between the Malazan Book of the Fallen and the Kharkanas series, you may be in for a surprise. http://www.tor.com/blogs/2012/03/st...+and+Stories%29

Marketing blurb for the forge of darkness: It’s a conflicted time in Kurald Galain, the warren of Darkness, where Mother Dark reigns. But this ancient land was once home to many a power… and even death is not quite eternal. The commoners’ great hero, Vatha Urusander, longs for ascendency and Mother Dark’s hand in marriage, but she has taken another Consort, Lord Draconus, from the faraway Dracon Hold. The idea of this union sends fissures throughout the realm, and as the rumors of civil war burn through the masses, an ancient power emerges from the long dead seas. Caught in the middle of it all are the Sons of Darkness, Anomander, Adarist, and Silchas Ruin of the Purake Hold. Sounds political :iamafag:

Oh god no. Read Night of Knives before Bonehunters. You can tell they phoned each other and synched up while they were writing those two. NoK is pretty weak and may put you off the whole series if you start with it. And you won't understand the significance of what's going on either.

I think I hit on what is annoying about Kyle, is that in ICE's writing there are always these rube characters with their forced-stupid first person commentary. See Kiska in NoK, Suth (who gets better admittedly) and more Kiska in Stoneweilder, and Butcher & the girl from the bandit camp whose name I can't remember in OST. I must say, I really did enjoy OST a lot. I can deal with some of the characters changing a bit, and I really liked how certain character's arcs finished. There's also good hooks for the upcoming Andii novels as well.

Yes they're both chilling in Darujistan in OST. Duiker has a killer one liner in that book too, and fisher gets a big plot hook at the end as well.

Well Erikson's explanation/apologia/invitation regarding the new trilogy is now up at tor: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2012/07/an...+and+Stories%29 I wonder if he felt compelled to write it out of fear of pissing off his current fanbase or what. I'm intrigued by the idea that it could be an introduction to the malazan world that's more palatable for people who have only been exposed to more traditionalist fantasy. Also prelude and chapter one: http://www.tor.com/stories/2012/07/forge-of-darkness-prelude-and-chapter-one-excerpt Fuzzy Mammal fucked around with this message at 22:44 on Jul 26, 2012 |

It will also be over a year before the trilogy is finished and you wouldn't want to wait that long before diving in to the main series. We should update that image with the newest books. I'm getting the necromancer novella number 5 next week!

Care to give more examples? The one you gave was IMO just a bit of spinning to leave things open for the next book as part of the denouement. It doesn't happen that often. On the contrary, I thought he did a good job finishing up people's arcs, Tayschrenn, Barathol & Scillara, and especially Traveller all had their arcs finish up pretty nicely.

Yeah I've just gotten to book two of Forge of Darkness. There's nothing in there that could spoil the previous books so far, and I don't see how since it takes place so long before. Illuminate characters perhaps but not detract in any way, really. It's a different pace but very much same old Erikson so far.

In the western sky the bright emerald banner of the Visitor descends like a portent of annihilation. On the continent of Jacuruku, the Thaumaturgs have mounted yet another expedition to tame the neighboring wild jungle. Yet this is no normal wilderness. It is called Himatan, and it is said to be half of the spirit-realm and half of the earth. And it is said to be ruled by a powerful entity whom some name the Queen of Witches, and some a goddess: the ancient Ardata. Saeng grew up knowing only the rule of the magus Thaumaturgs -- but it was the voices out of that land's forgotten past that she listened to. And when her rulers mount an invasion of the neighboring jungle, those voices send her and her brother on a desperate mission. To the south, the desert tribes are united by the arrival of a foreign warleader, a veteran commander in battered ashen mail whom his men call, the Grey Ghost. This warleader takes the tribes on a raid like none other, deep into the heart of Thaumaturg lands. While word comes to K'azz, and mercenary company the Crimson Guard, of a contract in Jacuruku. And their employer... none other than Ardata herself.

Yeah they've rereleased them a few times. The book club ones are fine quality, they're just a different physical size so if you end up with one without realizing it they will look bad on a shelf next to the rest of your full size ones. Aside from that the question is if you want to stick to the old-school covers. They're pretty bad but have their charm. The UK editions went off them faster and the last few TOR ones picked up the new style by the end. The new GoTM for examples follows the new style pretty well. There's a pretty good post your collection thread on the malazanempire.com forums. Collecting Erikson Titles is my private sperg. Let me know if you want to to go in to all the UK stuff as well.
