I didn't mind the Hitachi trainsets. Although they were shithouse in summer, if you were next to an open window it could be okay, otherwise you're stuck sweating.

Three Hitachis live on the top of a recent development in Easey St, Collingwood, they're used as office space and one is a burger bar.

quote:

No, you aren’t seeing things. There are really three train carriages on top of this building in Collingwood. One of them just happens to be converted into a restaurant and owned by Easey’s Burgers. Their train carriage is a Hitachi 153M, which began operating in Melbourne in 1978, before it retired and was superseded by carriages with air conditioning. Easey’s transformed the inside but kept some of the carriage’s original elements, which definitely adds to the restaurant’s character.

No matter what you order, you can dine anywhere in the building – downstairs in Zone 1 at large tables with retro video games built in, in the graffiti gallery of Zone 2 or up in the booths on the roof in Zone 3. Menus read like timetables and the walls that aren’t colour-coded to match their zone are covered in graffiti tags, an important step in any artist’s development.

http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/vline-crisis-tracks-on-365b-regional-rail-link-to-be-torn-up-this-weekend-20160212-gmsude.html

quote:

V/Line crisis: Tracks on $3.65b Regional Rail Link to be torn up this weekend
Hundreds of metres of railway track laid just two years ago as part of the most expensive public transport project in Victoria's history will be ripped up and replaced over the weekend because it is damaged and has damaged the wheels of V/Line trains.
The track replacement work will require the shutdown of part of the $3.65 billion Regional Rail Link, which has been in full service for less than seven months. Eight hundred metres of rail on the tightly curved flyover between North Melbourne and Southern Cross stations will be replaced this weekend.

The root cause of the wheel damage is still being investigated by Monash University rail experts, who are due to report on the issue in March, but the decision to replace the tracks on the rail flyover effectively confirms it is one of the chief causes of accelerated wheel wear on V/Line's VLocity trains.

The wheel wear and an unrelated boom gate failure in Dandenong last month have crippled V/Line rail services for weeks and cost the state tens of millions of dollars.
At the peak of the crisis as many as 70 services a day were cancelled and replaced by coach, prompting former V/Line chief Theo Taifalos to resign under intense pressure from the Andrews government.

...
The long list of expenses from the V/Line crisis includes hundreds of new steel wheels for VLocity trains, hundreds of replacement buses each day, more than two weeks of free travel statewide, compensation for myki pass holders, new axle counters at dozens of level crossings and track renewals.

VLocity trains are still barred from the Pakenham line until axle counters are installed at 21 level crossings on the line. Most Gippsland services have been replaced by coach, and from next week there will be four extra peak-hour Metro services between Pakenham and the city, so Gippsland commuters can switch to a train for part of their journey.

The government says V/Line services will return to normal in June.
...

Vline is the state regional public transport service, a government owned corporation, mainly coaches but a number of rail lines too. This started getting traction when the trainsets failed to trigger level crossings on the suburban network due to the wheels being worn away, although that was apparently un-related it brought the issue to to the media. The Vlocity trainsets are locally built by bombardier. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V/Line_VLocity

While the Regional Rail Link was the most expensive public transport project in the states history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_Rail_Link

And this is the flyover in question, lots of rails because of dual gauge.: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.8087431,144.9429605,106m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

New High Capacity trains ordered here for Melbourne. They look to be updated versions of X'Trapolis 100s that already run on half the network.

Announcement video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imwSqb4wpQE
Text below from here: https://urban.melbourne/transport/2016/09/12/next-generation-melbournes-train-fleet-unveiled

quote:

This morning at a media conference in the historic Newport Workshops, the Premier, Minister for Public Transport and Minister for Industry and Employment announced the Evolution Rail consortium was the successful bidder for the contract to supply the next generation of Melbourne's train fleet: High-Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT).

Keen to emphasise the employment opportunities, 15% of the expected 1,100 jobs created through the awarding of this contract will be for apprenticeships, trainees and cadets and transitioning automotive workers.

We’re guaranteeing more local work than ever with 60 per cent local content, as well as ensuring the inclusion of 15 per cent Victorian apprentices, trainees and cadets, and a partnership with Toyota to help transition workers out of the auto industry.
-- Wade Noonan, Minister for Industry and Employment

The Evolution Rail consortium comprises Downer Rail (ASX: Downer EDI Limited (link is external)), CRRC and Plenary. Furthermore, the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) will set up an Australian regional headquarters and establish "Australia's only bogie manufacturer" in Melbourne, the Victorian Government media release states.

Downer Rail has previously worked with a CRRC subsidiary - Changchun Railway Vehicles - to create the most recent fleet of trains operating on Sydney's rail network, the A Sets (link is external), better known as the Waratah fleet.

The historic Newport workshops will see a $16 million upgrade to allow manufacturing to occur on-site.

As foreshadowed when the tender was announced, a new dedicated maintenance facility will be built in Pakenham East - as well as a light service facility in Calder Park - and the new fleet will be dedicated to the Pakenham/Cranbourne lines, with the Sunbury line being added to the list once the Melbourne Metro Rail tunnel project connects all three lines.

The first tranche of new trains is set to begin testing in 2018 and they will begin roaming the mainline in 2019 after the Caulfield-Dandenong level crossing removal project has been completed. The entire fleet order of 65 new trains will be operating once the new Melbourne Metro Rail tunnel is complete in 2026.

The new trains will be formed in seven car consists and passengers will be free to move to any part of the train once aboard. The longer train and internal configuration will purportedly enable 20% more space in each train compared to trains which currently operate on the Melbourne network.
Government presser: http://www.premier.vic.gov.au/1100-jobs-with-65-new-trains-built-in-victoria-for-victoria/

So the lines they will run on are to be connected by the ~9bn Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel under the CBD, (the cost of these trainsets are in that 9bn) by 2026, and until then they will run on the two lines that are currently being upgraded to remove 9 level crossings along the route, rebuilding stations with longer platforms for the eventual longer trains, those two conjoined lined (Cranbourne-Pakenham line) is the busiest on the network currently.

The trains are 7 carriages long (160m, the length of the current platforms) until the new tunnel opens in 2026, when a further 3 carriages will be added to them

SBS (a national broadcaster) aired a 3 hour version last sunday and it got high ratings so they've decided to air a 17 hour version this weekend. 2:40am to 8:30pm.

I wonder if they'll air the full 54 hour trip sometime in the future... or record a different journey like the Indian Pacific.

The warning came as Rio delivered iron ore using the world’s first ever long distance, heavy haul driverless train.

The robotic train carried 28,000 tonnes of iron ore a distance of 280 kilometres from Rio’s Tom Price mine in Western Australia to the Pilbara port of Cape Lambert. Its journey was monitored from an operations centre more than 1500 kilometres away in Perth.

The mining industry is undergoing a major technological shift, automating many of its processes and bringing more unmanned vehicles on to mines, however, it has found Australia lacks the number of workers it needs to make this change.

Ore is valuable when it is multiple trains per day on that line.

$55m per day losses if the stockpile at port hedland runs out. They have about a week until export losses kick in.

Loss of the train + wagons & track replacement work is probably a few million.
