Has anyone tried out sticks from prostockhockeysticks.com and had any thoughts? I've somehow broken two sticks since Jan and I'd like to not shell out the cost of another True if I can get something comparable for less (especially since it's going to break eventually). I played with a stick from allblackhockeysticks before and it was _fine_ but didn't feel great so I'm looking for alternatives.

I have a friend who ordered custom sticks from there because he gets a fitness budget from work, and he's a big and tall guy who wanted some flex in a long enough stick without having to worry about a flimsy extension. He's happy with the sticks, but they took forever because they were custom. Buying an existing stick is probably going to give you a good experience.

Try them on if you can, but Supremes are wider than Vapors.
I used to wear Vapors when I first started, but the newer ones were super tight on me, so I had to move to the Supreme line when I got them a couple years ago.

Supremes are targeted to people who want better ankle support while skating. Vapors are cut a little lower are are supposed to be better for really tight turning and agility.

Most beer leaguers should be paying for Supremes at best. The really good skaters will notice the difference, but it's more if it fits and feels good then you should be wearing those. You can get them baked a few times, so if you're buying used take them in some where to get them baked to your feet.

I did manage to wear the heels out on mine already after a year, but I was in them 20-30 hours for most of last year (over 1000 hours easily). This year should be closer to maybe just 20 hours a week? I'm going to need to buy new skates in a few months already when the rest of the padding falls out of the heels. I haven't found a way to fix it nicely, but I can at least wear them for a bit still.

Then I step onto the ice and remember why. Really nothing like having a really nice sharp edge.

She got upset because she wanted me to play in both games. She did fall asleep during our game but was awake for the Flyers, guess we weren't going fast enough for her.

I've had a half dozen people complain to me about their Sparx messing up their edge too, but I think it messes with the profile after too many uses. I think we're going to invest in one of the Wissota machines. I'm spending $50-60 a month during the season on sharpening and I expect that number to go up before it goes down as my kid gets more particular about his edges.

Our goalie wasn't upset. I was more upset than he was. He looked lined up to catch it, but those bounces happen. We do only give up 2-3 goals a game these days when we're playing teams in our division, but we're working on scoring next. The big deal is that we've stopped the 8-9 goals against this season now. I switched into playing D this season too, and learning the timing on my transitions took a couple weeks. Figuring out what looks like a good pinch and bad one has been interesting too. Really makes me appreciate people who can anticipate the puck that well to routinely keep it in the zone. I've stopped over-pressuring at the offensive blue line, and I've been managing to keep most of the breakouts to the outside too.

How many people on your team wear mouthguards? It'll be the same people who will wear laceration protective gear. Not a bad idea at all, but a horrible way for people to start paying attention to it. I've just always worn the cut protection socks because they're the most comfortable ones I could find. I play bad low level hockey too, my biggest concern is people falling and stabbing me with their skates.

I have more concern when I'm dropping the puck for a faceoff. Narrowly avoided taking a butt end this weekend to the face. I've also managed to only get submarined twice in the last few months, but I'm getting good at anticipating play and making sure I'm not getting run into in the corners. Helps when the players keep their heads up and look where they're going too.

Definitely not a majority but I counted a solid third of them had one in last night. I don't think anyone wears cut resistant socks and that's just wild to me. I don't trust players at that level to keep upright the whole game so feet are flying everywhere.

Other team I'm on is in div 4 and most guys have socks but no one, absolutely no one, wears a mouth guard me included which is probably a dumb decision. I think there's an unfounded believe that full cages means you're not going to get your teeth knocked out but there's plenty of other ways for you do do damage. I've been thinking about getting one the past couple days but I'd need to wear it at stick and puck a couple times before I used it in a game. I tried it once and found it uncomfortable in the same way skating in a mask did but that's still preferable to losing teeth.

I really feel for the refs in low division games. You're surrounded by 10 very unsure skaters who are spilling all over the ice, I'm honestly surprised officials aren't getting barreled through every other shift.

If you’re in the Kraken League we’ve almost certainly crossed paths then. My team moved up to try 7a before settling into 7b this winter if you want to try to narrow me down. I’m improving enough with my positional play, but my hands aren’t quite there yet. My passing is improving a lot more than my shooting, and I can keep up going backwards so I’m having fun on D this year. Starting to hit those break out passes and picking up assists.

I don’t ref on Sunday nights normally because I’m playing, but you’re right about the bottom Divs. They don’t know how to skate and more importantly stop in a lot of cases. And they still push their speed which makes a lot of things dangerous even if it isn’t really a penalty because they can’t stop. I find myself lowering the standard of calls sometimes because it’s for their safety and they need someone to draw the line for what constitutes safe play. Most of the players are great people, but I just want to take them out and run skating drills for them instead of letting them play yet. I know playing it part of it, but they’re going to have a lot more fun in a year when they can put more of the pieces together.

I do more adult league on Mondays and Tuesdays though, and they can be fun. That’s your Div 3-5 that you’d see me at normally. Occasionally on Thursday for the 1-2 where they don’t like to wear even half shields. The near butt end was from the 18u Tier 1 boys this weekend though. Caught my shield.

You should definitely just skate over to every ref you have on Mondays to ask if they have stairs in their house then. If only for the random stares and confused questions you'd get. But there's always a chance. My legs don't feel as bad after a long weekend of skating. I had a really busy weekend a few weeks ago where I had 13 games in 3 days and that did it for me. Soft ice at LIC for hours and hours.

That's an interesting question for people though. How good/bad is the ice in your area? I was talking to a coach this weekend who's from Minnesota but is in Salt Lake City now and his team really enjoyed the ice (it was really pretty good that morning). Is everyone skating on soft ice rinks and I'm just being extra picky about what's good and bad?

If anyone figures me out I can give you a free tour of any penalty box whenever you want. Also happy to grab a beer on a night I’m not in stripes.

Non-Kraken league used rinks need tiering too. I’d put Snoqualmie at A tier as they do keep it nice and it’s kept cold. Kirkland is D tier. VMFH is C tier unless you get it after 9pm when they’ve had a chance to lower the temp and it’s not summer. D tier at 7pm or all summer because windows. Renton is a C tier. It’s okay, bit soft, but the only spot on the ice I hate is the Zam doors.

Highland gets an honorable mention for having the best ice this winter they’ve had in a decade.

Get your hip mobility up, work those abductors and adductors, work those fast twitch responses (if you can do stump jumps you're plenty fast for beer league) and learn how to do a full leg extension on each stride (including pushing off with your toe). Oh and do planks. Lots of planks.

The only planks the majority of beer leaguers I see can do are the ones that were popular on tiktok.

He kept missing, that's not quite unsporting behavior (601(a.2)). Now if he was down on the ice and they intentionally rocket one then you might get a call if it's not a shot on goal. The number of shots that go toward players standing or skating through lanes is very high.

The Watson shot on Lauzon last week was different because he shot the puck at him with much more clear intent to injure.

That’s a rule that elevates the others into match penalty territory instead of just being 5+game. In this situation, it wouldn’t be appropriate. No contact was made, no injury was sustained. We can’t just have match penalties for people who shoot the puck hard if they’re not hitting anything. And not if they fire the puck to make a regular hockey play if there’s a defender in the way either.

I’m not saying the guy wasn’t being an rear end in a top hat, but that’s not what we call an injury potential situation.

That does explain why my primary stick feels soft in the flex now. Here I thought I was just finally using it properly. Maybe some of each. I have Warrior Alphas too, but the timing was good for me to be near Vancouver BC for Boxing Day and I got another for 150CA$ in their sale. Bought my kid an extra stick too for just as cheap. With the exchange rate it came out nice and cheapish. I’ll probably keep using the primary for a bit, but the new one needs tape and then I’ll see how it goes. Didn’t notice it was an 85 instead of 75 flex, but I probably won’t notice the difference.

I’d hate to be buying these normal price there, some are normally priced around 400CA$ and that’s just stupid expensive.

I do notice different contact to my shaft playing D this year, and I load up for shots and passes with more strength too. I’m near the top of the list on assists, but I put one in off the face off last weekend. That felt really nice.

Yeah we have a Gretzky rule for the lower divs. Anything 6-10 is a 3 goal max. Teams that constantly have someone hitting it have been getting moved up to harder competition.

The sandbagging in the lower divs has been getting a little better, but you’ll run into someone who just wants to play hockey with a partner or family member who really does sandbag it successfully just so they can have some fun. It’s the middle divs where that’s still an issue.

There's no requirements for expiration dates to be within any limit for adult recreational hockey. That said, if your bucket is in lovely shape, get a new one so you don't find out the hard way how big a difference it makes. There are helmets out there now with a ton of options for adjusting the fit. Even the skaters in the A/1-2 divs will occasionally find out how much work their helmet is doing. Also advisable to replace old helmets if you take a big impact in them as the padding is what goes.

I'm also seeing a larger percentage of lower div adult skaters wearing laceration guards on their neck, or the full shirt with cut protection. I don't know how they don't absolutely carry sweat and then I see how fast their skating and realize there's probably not much to soak up.

Did you put decent insoles into them? The ones that come standard in skates are really hard. I like superfeet, but Bauer makes ones that are also nice (and I think more expensive). If you're not going to be using skates for a ton of time a week there's not probably a point in buying $400 skates. Using them and breaking them in will also help. Can you even bake those? I did mostly Tier II and Tier I games this year, and even they complain less than adult league. It's part of the allure.

They were great at crashing the net and it left us overloaded on D constantly. Two of their goals including the game winner came off a play with two in front before our forwards could get back and they'd just dump a puck in front to whack at it. Not a bad strategy.

So with my old and slowish team we signed up for the Kraken Cup for this last weekend. Going in we had only one expectation of having a ton of fun and playing 4 games of hockey. And drinking enough to remind us we’re old.

So we not only accomplished our goal, but won our division and scored a bunch of goals in the process.

My skill playing defense has improved a ton since last year and it’s been great fun. I can angle plays off into the corner and take the puck away. I can hold the offensive blue line pretty well. My puck handling still needs improvement, but also much better than it used to be.

Time soon for summer season and maybe giving my legs and back a break for a couple weeks.
