It's been forever since I've played hockey, and I've really missed it. I've daydreamed about joining a local adult league more than a few times in recent years, but it's always felt like too much :effort: to get back in shape, buy new gear, etc. Plus, SoCal doesn't have the same hockey culture that I was used to back in Boston.

But, seeing this thread brought my enthusiasm back.

The gf thinks it'll be fun for me to get back into, though we'll see what she thinks of it once I start coming home smelling like hockey.

Anybody have recommendations for good proshops in the Los Angeles area?

Socal is actually pretty good, with 2 teams, 7 + rinks within 30 minutes of me in Torrance I have little complaints, for pro shops you have a lot of options. I like the new one in el segundo, Jake's. For used gear I use the play it again on 190th/Hawthorne, for other stuff I use hockeytron and hockey giant, both in the Anaheim area. I still get my skates done at the TSC in El Segundo though.

Jake's is an awesome proshop. He also does what I think is the best sharpening in the area. If you're choosing between hockey monkey and hockey giant, go with monkey. Their staff is way, way better. I've never dealt with hockeytron before, so I don't know what there is to say about that place.

Hockeytron is like hockey monkey but more of everything. The only reason I still use giant is because I can stop there on the way to Disneyland.

Avoid play it again and golden bear for sharpening at all costs.

PS I'll be at TSC today at the 215 public skate trying out my new shin pads for their maiden skate if they will fit under my drat workout pants.

Anyone know of good inexpensive roller skates? It seems like the prices are pretty high right now and the used market here in LA is pretty tiny, I had no problem getting great ice stuff used but cannot find any roller skates, it's weird.

Ace you're a SoCal hockey player, right?

Have you ever heard the IceAngeles league played out of the Harbor City rink near Torrence?

Thinking of checking it out -- anything to avoid Toyota Sports Center.

Yeah I heard of it but there really isn't much info on it on their site, and I haven't had a chance to call the guy yet and ask how it works, if there is just a FA list, a draft skate or if you just need to find someone. I've been trying to get down there for a pick up but the times haven't been working out for me.

I'll actually be at the TSC tomorrow for their Stick/Puck at 1245 unless I decide to hit up Glacial Gardens at 1050.

I learned to skate at the Skating Edge (Harbor City Rink) when I was a kid but I haven't been there in 10 years so I don't know if they've fixed the ice.

Really though you should try them both on because while the Easton's look kind of cool once I put one on I realized I'd never actually buy one because of how they fit on me.

The E700 is supposed to fit quite different from the S series ones according to MSH at least. New shell design, etc.

So, since people are on the topic now, are there any other kinds of legal interference or tricks of the trade for preventing a guy from making a play on the puck?

When one of my guys is coming in to grab the puck from a dump or to play behind the net I always get between him and the opposing player and hold him up. Get in front of people and slow them down, I can't stand when someone just lets someone go by them without some kind of engagement, if only to make them have to go around you, a couple seconds is all you need to buy.
