I'm in Penn Hills so technically Bladerunners in Harmarville, but I usually go out to one of the rinks in the South Hills for pick up and stick time since it takes like 30-45 minutes to get there and there's way more people.

I used to play there with a group at Harmarville that had a weekly pickup, but they switched to North Park's outdoor rink for the winter. Both of those are like 45 min drives for me so I mainly play at Bladerunners in Cranberry or at RMU/Neville Island.

I skated at North Park's outdoor rink last year and was impressed that the ice was honestly better than our rink down here in FL.

Plus there's something inherently awesome about skating outside while it's snowing.

I'll have to go give it a try then, havent been able to make it since they started

What do y'all use to keep your gear smelling fresh and...well, not like death, anyway? I air my pads out after every game (they're actually being aired out anytime I'm not playing, ie: they spend very little time in my bag) and have historically had pretty inoffensive equipment. But increased playing activity over the last 2+ months due to paternity leave (and then being laid off) that allowed me to attend afternoon pickups has definitely caused it to get pretty rank. I've used Febreeze before, but am not a huge fan as it just makes my stuff smell like Febreezed death,. Not much of an improvement. Is there some spray? One of those little bag fresheners? What should I do?

Along with airing it out, you can spray it down with a mix of isopropyl alcohol and water, will kill the bacteria without any smell

Any decent ideas for a little shooting practice dealio I could build? Thinking a couple sheets of plexiglass

I got something from home depot/lowes that is called 1/8" smooth panelboard, almost like a whiteboard, came in a 8'x4' sheet for $7 or something. Just needed a little silicon spray for the puck to slide good. Heard it doesnt hold up every well to slapshots, but good for stickhandling/wrist shots

My wrist has been bothering me for a couple months, finally got to a specialist the other day since my family doctor didnt know what the problem was. Something wrong with a tendon that goes from my thumb to my wrist, so got a steroid shot and am in a soft brace for almost a month. Of course I tried to plan this in the 6 weeks I had between leagues, but it didnt work out as expected, took a month to get an appointment.

Got to skate at Consol again today, couldnt play pickup for that reason, but got to skate for 30 min or so and watch pickup. Someone tried to get Lemieux and Recchi to come out and skate with us, since Adult Fantasy Camp (pay $5k to skate on a team with 1 former pro and play in a tourny with 3 other teams) apparently just finished when we got there, but they were tired, would of been a cool experience.

How the gently caress do you get to play pickup at Consol

I met someone who works there who was telling me how they try to do staff pickup whenever they can, but apparently no one knew any goalies who would go, so no one ever played. I was able to help them out with that, so now they are able to play pickup whenever they can get ice time, as long as I can find goalies.

Yeah I think both ice stick time and pick up are $8 for 2 hours here. Inline pickup is $8 for 4 hours, which apparently no one ever pays for since the entrance for this rink is like 100 yards from the front desk and no one that works there feels like walking and checking if people paid. Pittsburgh

I think my league would be pretty reasonable if if they cut it down to just the bottom 6 or so teams. Against the top teams it's pretty much guaranteed to be a 5+ goal margin and those games are hard to get excited for.

Yeah that is what I had our league director do. We had 5 great teams and 5 bad teams in our league, so we just split it into two leagues, every team is within four points from 1st to 5th in both leagues, it is a lot more fun now.

Oh, there was an ID check.

The problem is these guys play on 2-3 teams across 2-3 divisions, play the bare minimum required to qualify for the playoffs (and score 3-4 points and win by 3-4 on each game they play while otherwise their team loses every other game) and then they ALL show up for the playoffs and suddenly the #6 team in C league has a full line of B+ league players.

Yeah I played a team last night in our best of 2 semi finals series, (if both teams win a game there is a 15 min tiebreaker game), lost 11-2, but in game one, we had no problem with a 5-2 win. Completely different team showed up, they are all rostered with probably the minimum 3 games played to be eligible to be in the playoffs. Ended up with a tie in the OT game, but lost in the shootout.

The good thing is though is that their captain wasnt at the last captains meeting a few days ago, so we moved them up into a higher league without them knowing.

Lol they just had a "scheduling issue" where they told us the makeup game that they had scheduled for tomorrow at 3 is actually going to be played thursday at 7:30. It's kinda ridiculous but it's still pretty fun. I think our division is supposed to be like E or D maybe, but it's really unbalanced. The top two teams are 8-0 and 8-1 (we're .5GB), and then you have 3 teams roughly near each other and then 2 that are 2-8 and 1-8. The top team and my team definitely should be up a league, we're just crushing everyone and it isn't even fair. Other than parity though, it doesn't seem to be all that terribly ran, but I've been playing there for less than a full season.

I'm emailing that guy now, thanks for the contact!

I've seen at least 3 times where 3 teams showed up for the same time slot. Hmm, what else, schedule requests, our goalie couldnt play Saturdays due to work, ended up with 9 out of 10 saturday games without ever playing one in previous seasons. At least you dont have to deal with the ref named Dean who was kicked out of there, went to Cranberry and got kicked out of there too.

Speaking of gear, I'm looking for some advice on gear for ladies. I can only seem to find female chest protectors online, and I'm sort of concerned about getting a proper fit. Is there anything in particular I should keep in mind for when I'm looking? Can male chest protectors work, or is it worth it to find female ones? Also, does it matter if I get women's pants, or can I see if I can find male ones that fit?

You can probably make male stuff work, I'd just try going to a hockey store and trying stuff on and see what fits you best. I'm not sure where you're located, but there are new Total Hockey stores that opened in Robinson/Cranberry and Pure Hockey is opening soon on Neville Island. I have never had much luck with Peranis, but heard they added a lot more stuff to compete with the new stores. There is also K.O. in Cannonsburg

Top, I don't know much of what is said in upper level leagues by refs when players are arguing, complaining, etc. However, there is a ref in my league that will start to argue back at the player and in some cases when the player starts to swear at the ref and insult the ref, the ref will dish it right back and almost egg on the player. It almost seems like the ref wants to be the focus of attention in situations like that. I would expect that it not professional in nature to do something like that as a ref, but he has gotten a reputation from doing these things. What are your thoughts on that, and the ref?

A ref in my league did that a few weeks ago, kept egging on our player and suspended him for 3 games when he yelled back at him.

The guy that runs the pickup that I go to uses this, seems easy enough. I think you just email a list of people and from there you RSVP and it shows who is a yes/no. Can limit the open spots that there are too.
