Their sound is pretty distinctive, at least to me. Probably tough to match perfectly. Maybe the likes of Karma to Burn, Truckfighters, Samsara Blues Experiment? Kyuss and Earthless for instrumental stuff in general, although Earthless is much more straightforward psychedelic rock. Orchid, if you don't mind pure old-fashioned Sabbath worship. But I'm on an Orchid kick, so that's my go-to suggestion for everything.

Saw Down in Austin last weekend and it was probably the worst concert I've seen them put on. Hell, one of the worst this year period. A messy sound mix, killed any the momentum they had with a lousy performance of Conjure, Phil couldn't sing worth poo poo or remember the people who opened for them... I'm not saying it to be a jackass -- they were my gateway into the genre so it's a genuine bummer. I saw them reform in 2002 (or 3?) and every show I've caught since has been sloppier and sloppier. Or I simply became a greybeard, that's possible too.

Fly McCool posted:I dig the Sabbath-esque, twangy (?) sounds of Kyuss, The Obsessed, and some of Bjork's solo work. Who are some other bands within the genre that veer towards more of a "rock and roll" sound versus a heavier one? I don't know how much of a Sabbath sound you'll get from some of these, but they're definitely more r&r than super-heavy: Troubled Horse, Witchcraft, Graveyard, Orchid (total Sabbath worship there).

It's a bit more "metal" than "doom" (I don't post in the metal thread) but I think his voice hasn't sounded as cool and bluesy since NOLA/Down II with all those harmonies and poo poo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgFGODoXXbY Dig it, thanks for pointing it out. I'm with you, his singing style went away from what I thought was one of Down's strengths. Glad to hear it still exists somewhere.

Laserface posted:I have these and they are much better than the old ER-20s. Just realized that I have the old version (got mine in 2015, thank you Amazon order search function) and I must be using them wrong because they don't do poo poo for me. As in, they don't attenuate the volume at all. Gave up on them after a particularly painful show and went back to the plain foam kind. I never thought I'd be using earplugs incorrectly, but here we are. Any... tips?

I might have the auditory equivalent of prosopagnosia, but the very opening to the album has echoes of Tool to me. I know Tool and their fans can be... controversial, so it's not meant as an insult -- I genuinely liked it.
