Thank you to whoever recommended Jack Harlon and the Dead Crows. Scratches my Kyuss itch perfectly

And here’s Kyuss with a message about social distancing

Sub Pop remastered TAD’s first album “God’s Balls” and if you like sludgy heavy stuff check it out. Huge improvement over Jack Endino’s original production. It’s on Apple Music - not sure where else

My favorite album of the 1988-90 stretch when Seattle bands hadn’t attracted big label attention yet

A good example of a record cover letting you know what it sounds like

That's awesome. Tad is so underrated.

Inhaler is my personal favorite.

I went to see Tad back in the day when they were on tour with Soundgarden and Eleven. My buddies and I thought Tad would be the second band that night (and who wouldn't?), so like idiots, we stayed outside in the parking lot drinking beer until we figured the first band was finished playing.

We got into the venue in time for the second band - thinking it'd be Tad - but found out Tad performed first that night. We had no idea Tad and Eleven switched the number two spot every other night on that tour.

I'm still pissed I missed out on seeing Tad live.

I first saw Tad at the Sub Pop Lamefest in June 1989. Mudhoney, Tad, and Nirvana. (Bleach was released that day)

The next summer I saw Soundgarden with Tad and Screaming Trees as the openers. TAD came on stage and Tad Doyle bellowed “DO YOU WANT ME TO BARE-rear end YOU?” Of course the audience went nuts so he dropped his pants

What some current bands I should check out if I'm looking some super crushing poo poo with a really good groove? I've been out of the loop for years. I'd already be familiar with most recs up to like, 2008. Been on a kick listening to the stuff I was into in the late 90's early 2ks again lately. Some of my favs were early era Neurosis (enemy of the sun, through silver and blood etc...) and early Isis (Celestial, Red Sea,Mosquito Control, SGNL 05) Cavity, Eyehategod...Also not pure sludge but I love High on Fire.

Fwiw I think Celestial is probably my favorite stoner metal album ever, so anything that sounded remotely like that would be welcome. I don't care for any of their proggier stuff though. Like, anything post Panopticon was pretty meh to me.

I heard about Jack Harlon and the Dead Crows from someone in this thread and if you like bluesy heavy stuff they are fantastic

Killdozer were one of the earliest bands I think fall into the “sludge” category

I bought this LP at the local record store when it came out in 1987 knowing nothing about it and this song is still great (and funny)

New Jack Harlon & the Dead Crows track just dropped and it’s really good. They are more stoner/sludge/desert/psychedelic. Discovered them from poster Laserface a year ago

Though they don’t have any new releases in 2021 Somali Yacht Club is my favorite discovery of the year so far

Edit: VVV They’re tough to recommend because they’re not easy to categorize. I’ve sent friends a link to “The Tale Of” and if that doesn’t hook them nothing will

Please recommend me albums that are sci fi or fantasy concept albums. Think Dopesmoker, The Sword’s Warp Riders, Bantha Rider, Dvne, Clutch’s Blast Tyrant, etc. Doesn’t have to be 100% one coherent story, but I want some intentionally created epic albums with shitloads of riffs.
The only thing is I hate screaming and indecipherable metal growling. Yelling like Neil Fallon is ok.

Jack Harlon and the Dead Crows’ music is all based on their story of a post apocalyptic desert wandering drug addict. No annoying vocals. So you might give their albums Hymns and The Magnetic Ridge a listen

Welp

As much as I’d like to start buying vinyl and CDs again I’ve given up and surrendered to paying $10 a month for Apple Music. I have a turntable and receiver and cassette deck and everything plus ~1000 vinyl records and almost as many CDs in my basement and I am just too loving lazy. Like 95% of the stuff I have is on Apple Music so I can just sit on my rear end and listen to anything

I have no idea what the best digital way to get music from a band is, in terms of the band getting $

It got mentioned in the industrial goth thread as well, but yeah this is my biggest fear. I'm cool with seeing First and Last and Always cuts and definitely bangers from those early EPs (just open with loving "Alice" and you might have me) but I really don't need to see "This Corrosion" stripped down with some tacky choral backing tracks.

I definitely remember buying Vision Thing from the record store in the mall when it dropped. "Ribbons" is the only track I will jam on that one.

Ribbons is great
