That Greg Horn art is basically a war crime though.

I like Humberto Ramos he definitely knows what he is doing and has a mastery of the craft, that being said his work does split people into they either like it or hate it. He isn't crappy though, you just don't like his style, he's a pretty fantastic storyteller.

Have any of you checked out his work on Moon Knight? He did plenty of normal looking faces there. He's an artist that draws what is asked of him and Wolverine's the best there is, is asking for ugly and lots of it.

Source is Vengeance of Moon Knight probably issue 10 or something. I don't have my trade with me, but it was a good issue.

Here's a page by David Aja who is a master, what I find interesting however is how he talks about taking shortcuts in order to make a deadline and the comic being better for it. I think this is one of those examples.

Ramos is going for a completely different thing with his style and his influences are very different from Bachalo's. They look similar because a lot of you view them as cartoony but that is about it. Ramos has complete understanding of the fundamentals the rules he breaks he knows he's breaking. If you don't like it you just don't find his aesthetic style pleasing, but his storytelling is almost never bad.

Can you tell what is going on in a comic he draws? You must have a conniption when you look at Eric Canete's art, it's exaggerated for a reason. As to above poster yes some of his best work comes out when he doesn't have to fit a bi monthly schedule.

I love this piece by him. I do with he would get a different colorist.

I don't think "You can tell what's going on" is a sign of good art or storytelling. Otherwise Greg Land is a good artist and a storyteller. But he isn't, neither is Humberto Ramos. Neither is myself drawing a stick figure on a paper punching another stick figure - you can tell what's going on, but it's not worth paying for in a major comic book.

Storytelling is how you tell the story, being able to understand what is going on in a story whether that be through the action and movement or being able to discern which characters are which IS storytelling. Land can't properly portray a characters age because he traces supermodels and porn stars. Ramos does not do that do not lump them into the same category.

If that isn't storytelling then what is? Have you created your own definition for it?

You don't need any text to understand what is going on in this page. There is no need for captions that explain exactly what is happening because the art can't convey it on the page.

I am totally cool with people not digging his style, but to say he's in the same league as Greg Land just hurts. Especially when the guy isn't tracing porno mags has a crazy work ethic and inks his own work.

The main reason most people aren't saying anything is that there will always be retards that will incessantly defend lovely art with "THAT'S MY STYLE" and it's a tango we've all danced way too many times so at the first sign of people trying to write off lovely fundamentals as an artistic choice we just let out a very long and tired sigh and give up. Stewart was talking about finally getting a script for a project that's ending was long overdue on twitter months before NYCC. He then mentioned he would have some announcements during NYCC but nothing about his work was announced. So it stands to reason it could be Seaguy Eternal, since other creators with DC projects didn't get their work announced either.

The absolute amount of effor MAzzucchelli put into every letter in Asterios Polyp is astounding.

Huddleston is doing some really great work right now on Butcher Baker the righteous maker with Joe Casey.

An artist I really like is Michael Lark, seeing as he's about to come back to comics (Punisher with Rucka) after what was apparently a short break.

In tandem with Stefano Gaudino I think he looks really good, and he definitely services the story before anything else.

I don't like his style when he draws people. His angles are harsh, his facial features are grotesque, and his aesthetics overall are very garish.

Wow that is one of the best Frank Miller images. Seeing as how you like To I can totally see why you don't like Miller though. To can't draw middle aged looking people everyone must look pretty and young.

And I couldn't stand his art any more than I could in The Dark Knight Strikes Again. I used Returns to show that even at Miller's best I can't stand it.

In my defense, I'd like to present who I feel is a superior Noir artist: Tim Sale

My issue with Miller is that everyone looks positively grotesque; Sale, unlike Miller, has a sense of aesthetics. Femme Fatales look gorgeous, Two-Face looks ugly, the Joker looks like a twisted Cheshire Cat, and Gordon looks like he just stopped chain smoking about two weeks ago. With Miller, even Wonder Woman looks off to me.

My philosophy with comic art is that it must serve the story at all times. I don't want all comic book characters to look like supermodels, but at a bare minimum the art to match the tone and logic of the story. And even then, there are some artists that rub my aesthetics the wrong way.

Yeah that's absolutely fair and I agree. Miller usually isn't telling romance high school stories so I don't mind his style. He's a pretty drat good storyteller as well. Tim Sale is pretty excellent as well good choice.

I had always been under the impression that pornographic = penetration is shown rather than suggested and there's very little plot, and erotic = no visible penetration and the plot is romance with explicit sex... Or maybe that's the distinction between porn and soft porn?

Pornographic is exploitative, unsubtle. If what turns you on makes it porn then just seeing a girl or a guy you like on the street would be pornographic. There's a difference between Manara's erotic comics and your standard generic porno on the internet. There are a ton of novels from renowned authors who describe sex scenes in their books with great detail, but nobody calls them porno writers.

That's my opinion though.
