Back in like 2012, Paul Kaminski (Editor on the archie sonic comic at the time) was hyping people up because he got a big name big 2 artist to do some covers, and... well...

But what did he trace them from?

edit: Never mind. I got my four-letter-last-name Gregs mixed up.

Actually you're right about that suspicion, all 3 poses come straight from official artwork of the characters.

Anyways for some good art, have some Ben Bates (colors by Brittany Peer) from the Bebop & Rocksteady Hit the Road #1

that panel would probably look unironically good with a more stylized coloring style (especially if the rest of the comic had a similar level of stylization)

Actually that was Bollers.
From what I understand, Sega never provided them with a copy of Sonic Adventure after they told them to adapt the game so they are going off an imported copy so they have no idea what's being said in the cutscenes.

Actually that particular story was Penders; the adventure adaption was a mix of stories written by Bollers and ones written by Penders

Originally some of the stories (the Penders written ones) were going to be in issues 33-34 of Knuckles the Echidna, while the Bollers ones were going to be in the main book, but the Knuckles book got cancelled after issue 32 and so the already finished stories had to be squeezed in, making the whole even last 2 months longer than planned

IDW Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2020

(pencils by Lamar Wells, inks/colors by Bracardi Curry)

compare to:

IDW Sonic the Hedgehog #19

(lineart by Jack Lawrence, colors by Bracardi Curry)

IDW Sonic the Hedgehog #21

(pencils by Lamar Wells, inks by Reggie Graham, colors by Heather Breckel)

Archie Sonic the Hedgehog #230

(pencils by Ben Bates, inks by Terry Austin, colors by Matt Herms)

I think the artist legit got in hot water for this, because he was a semi regular cover artist before the annual (being a carry over from Archie) but hasn't shown up since

Looking this up, he did six covers (a couple of them variant covers) for IDW/Sonic between September 2018 and March 2020 prior to this annual story. It's not like long gaps between him doing a cover seems that unusual. Is there any story to him being blackballed or 'in hot water'?

I think what would've gotten him in hot water was specifically the lifting from Archie: the other instances of lifting (especially of his own art) were probably alright. It is speculation from my part, but his longest gap in appearances prior to the annual was between doing interior fill ins for the September 2019 issue and the March 2020 cover (so half a year) but now it's been a year since the Annual would've come out if it weren't for Covid and we have solicits for stuff coming out a year after the Annual did end up coming out, and there's still no sign of him.

Here's some obvious low hanging fruit with Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie) #113

Now the cover was from the standard cover team of the time:

Pencils: Patrick Spaziante
Inks: Nelson Ribeiro
Colors: either an unknown colorist who didn't sign their name or Spaziante and/or Ribeiro

and the Frontispiece is also fine (and again, the standard frontispiece team):

Pencils: Jeff Axer
Inks: can't find any artist signatures so I can't say for sure but cross referencing some full stories and frontispieces with signatures that Axer worked on at the time my best guess would be Nelson Ribeiro
Colors: Josh and Aimee Ray

But then you get to the actual issue itself (note: cherry picking random highlight pages):

Original SatAM Episode Script: Pat Allee
Script Adaptation: Jay Oliveras* ("with help by Karl Bollers")
Pencils/Inks: Jay Oliveras* ("with help by Many Hands")
Colors: Josh and Aimee Ray
Letters: Vickie Williams

(*Jay Oliveras is rumored to be a pseudonym for then-editor Justin Gabrie)

He usually doesn't do comics (though he did make some direct contributions to the old Dexter's Lab comics DC put out in the late 90s/early 00s), but he did get to do that Luke Cage miniseries; meanwhile both inker Stephen DeStefano and colorist Bill Wray are people who have worked in both comics and animation (animation fans would likely recognize both for having worked on Ren & Stimpy way back in the day, and they also frequently pop up on Genndy and Genndy-adjacent projects)

It's fascinating to see how much an artist's sensibilities can change the timing sensibilities of a script; both of these examples below are from the same writer:

The sheer contrast of how things smoothly flow when Mitchroney is on art vs how stilted everything feels with Lawson on art.

I know IDW, while not allergic to using freelancers, has a stable of in-house letterers (who also serve as production designers; seems like a lot of overlap between the two positions these days); when one of those guys got the axe back in last year's layoffs (Shawn Lee), some of the books he was the main letterer on (like Sonic and TMNT) opted to continue having him do lettering freelance
