The character descriptions sound like GTA3 trilogy-esque.

I'm expecting it to be the total opposite of IV.

I hope the result is better than what Gay Tony did, though. Gay Tony was weird for me. It tried to be funny and cartoony, but it never really clicked. It felt like a bunch of random dudes doing stupid poo poo, while containing the "realism" of IV.

Luis co-owns the biggest nightclub in Liberty City. Unlike other GTA main characters he's not poor, he's not in desperate need for cash, he starts off with a high end apartment in GTAIV's Manhattan equivalent and yet he's pushing drugs for people, stealing diamonds for his gay boss and jacking army helicopters for his rich middle eastern friends. It just made no sense.

Did you not catch the entire first two hours were they went over again and again how the clubs were tanking badly, and Tony barely had the cash to keep them running, let alone pay Luis? Or how on top of this, they owe tons of cash to various crime families who would like nothing more then to come down and destroy their kneecaps?

Luis needed money just as badly as every other GTA protagonist.

I'm really hopeful for GTAV. I was one of the GTA fans who felt somewhat betrayed by GTAIV just not being anywhere near as fun as previous installments in the series, and focusing a bit to heavily on realism. But after BoGT and what little I've played of RDR, it seems Rockstar somewhat learned their lesson that what made GTA great WAS the driving around in silly gang wars and shooting the police in a stolen tank while exploring dark alleys for crack so you get weapons at your hideout, rather then the silly background drama thuglife that is only there to tie it all together.

I don't see why Gay Tony is great while Last and the Damned is lame.

I wouldn't say Lost and the Damned is lame, but I'll try to explain why I liked BoGT more.

GTAIV to me is a boring game. I can usually get to about meeting Packie before I just get bored and have to either force myself to finish, or more often, just quit and go do something else. The reasons for this are many, while the story is interesting, the gameplay is terrible, not even realism nonsense, its just not fun to drive some annoying character around for an hour, drive up to the next guys house, and find out that since its 7:15 rather then 7:00, I now need to find something to do for the next real hour or so. Oh, and since there are no fun collections, or fun side diversions, this usually boils down to go pick up more people and do more boring things while I wait.

Lost and the Damned fixed up the gameplay a ton, but ultimately didn't really do much with the fun angle. Missions continued to be average jobs for average people and there was very little to remember about it, besides the average Gang War. Overall, its a ton better then GTAIV, but I didn't really find it on par with the previous GTA games.

Ballad of Gay Tony added in a few really poor flying missions, but brought back everything else good. The gameplay improvements from Lost and the Damned were still around, and no longer was everything so serious. Now we had missions to go invade Chinatown, and were given a P90 on the way there. Or hit someone with Golfballs, or hijack a moving train, or speed to the airport with the radio blaring and an attack helicopter backing us up leading to an airplane exploding and us landing in a park.

The silly was what made GTA good for me. My favorite memories of Vice City were the boat defense against the French, wrecking the mall in cop suits, planting bombs in cop suits, and just the over the top characters, Or San Andreas were we raided Area 51, and climbed the wall of a Casino to assassinate someone, or flew in to reclaim an aging rappers mansion to the tune of Ride of the Valkyries with a bunch of Asian gangsters in ninja suits backing us up.

And Ballad while not as good as the previous games, at least brought a bit back, and showed that Rockstar might still have it.

I'd love to see a GTA Twin Cities.

I lived in Minnesota for 15 years, and spent most of that in the Twin Cities, and I think it would be a great setting. The only issue I could see is that most of the crime in the Twin Cities is more corporate/business based then petty thugs and gangs, but they could probably figure something out.

I mean, it would be two cities that are literally right next to each other, so it would give them reason to make a larger map, and it would be hilarious to have a mission where a 4-6 foot blizzard just happened, and your Eastern European gangbanger has to figure out how to drive around in the countryside in blizzard conditions while getting shot at by some petty thugs.

And the Mall of America!

Sadly it will never happen, and they'll just keep rehashing the cities they have, but still.

Also I still firmly believe Tommy Vercetti is the best GTA protagonist, since his character in cutscenes and gameplay is actually consistent, rather than the other protagonists who make a huge deal about killing people in cutscenes then proceed to slaughter hundreds of people in every single mission.

Several actually do.

Claude is pretty good, because he never talks, so he's basically just filling the shoes of mafia hireling #18123871, and well, the things he does outside the cutscenes and the cutscenes mesh fairly well.

Tommy is ok, they basically just made him a sociopath both in and outside cutscenes, which I guess fits, but I found him a little over the top at times, and just honestly didn't like him as much as Claude.

CJ was pretty terrible in cutscenes as he seemed to be an average 9-5 guy who just wants to clean up everything, but then goes in to game mode and absolutely wrecks everyone as some sort of death god. But he still has some motivation to continue following the story, I mean, he needs to help the grove/needs to escape/rebuild/kill everyone. While he's not really the best GTA protag, his personal story and motivations at least fit whats he's doing. e: Actually, yeah, there was that cop storyline, I totally forgot about that like 5 minutes in, whatever, I stayed playing and it fit because THE GROVE NEEDS ME DAWG.

Nico is the worst of them all in terms of connectivity between cutscene and gameplay/missions, he constantly goes on about how he wants to clean up his act, then rather then working at a 9-5 job, he just goes around and kills people because why the gently caress not I guess. He's given at least 7-8 chances throughout the game to stop killing people and lead a seminormal life, and just keeps at it, bemoaning his fate the entire way. Its hilarity when you are outright killing Bank Guards, robbing a bank, and just in general being a dick, and suddenly Nico quips about how "He just wants to be a normal guy"

Johnny and Luiz are pretty good, and probably some of the better Rockstar characters in terms of motivations and following up on what happens in game, Johnny doesn't really want to redeem himself at all, his vengeance just ultimately ends with his ending, and he doesn't really have any other choices, and since he is a bike hooligan, he doesn't really have any issues with going around roughing people up. Luiz is pretty much just a much better Claude, he outright says he doesn't give a poo poo about killing people/surviving, and most of what he does in the missions fills in with who and what he is, while maintaining that air of oldschool GTA. The only major issues with the Luiz storyline is the mom missions, which while bad, don't pull you out of his story as badly as Nicos constant remarks/nonsensical motivations with plot, or CJs normalness.

Really, the only jarring one across the entire GTA gamescape would be Nico, as not only does his character not mesh with the freeplay, his character doesn't even mesh with the goddamn cutscenes/story missions. It was extremely jarring for him to go on about how he never wants to see a gun again, and how badly he feels every time he kills someone, then he picks up a knife, stabs 8 people to death in mission, shoots 20 more, all while yelling how he loves the taste of blood, and how Khorne needs more skulls. Its just absolutely nonsensical in every way.

I never played GTAIV, is it worth just getting the episodes standalone disc, does that have enough content/replay value or should I really play the main game if I want to experience GTAIV? Really I want to know if the main game is worth bothering with, because i've heard positive things about the DLC.

Pretty much everyone should beat GTA IV at least once, but realize its fairly long, and at times can really drag. You really need to have the depressed I want to watch gritty european movies mindset in hand to enjoy it, rather then the traditional lets have fun mindset you usually have when you play games.

Lost and the Damned is pretty good, but if you dislike Biker culture you might as well skip it, it didn't really add anything all that exciting. I thought it was neat enough, but many people didn't like it.

Everyone should play Ballad, because it showcases the fact Rockstar did hear people complaining about GTA IV being a bit to depressing/realistic, and attempted to merge the silly/realism a bit, especially in the last mission, and while it could have been handled a little bit better, it was still probably one of my favorite things. "Yo Yusuf, now is not the time, I got to race to the airport to stop this crazy Russian gently caress, as if he leaves the country, me and Tony are hosed. Why am I telling you this?" "LUIZ, MY friend of the family, YUSUF DOES NOT LEAVE HIS HOMIES HANGING!" :allears:

That single moment was probably my favorite one in the entire GTA saga, simply because I had lost all faith in Rockstar, and then suddenly Gold Plated Apache starts doing strafing runs in front of me, while Yusuf yells out crazy poo poo at people. It went even better since I had the cops on me, and it was pitch black at night, and suddenly Helicopter starts blasting the cops. It was such a "Rockstar you glorious bastards" moment.
