I thought the expectation vs reality angle was interesting. That's all

After being impressed by "The Changeling", I was recommended "The Stone Tape" and "Ghostwatch", any thoughts on them?

Ghostwatch is a fun little movie. It's a real slow burner though. I'd say jump in and give it a shot, but keep in mind it rrrrrreally takes its time to get where it's going. Depending on your friends, you might want to watch it alone, because there's a good chance they will start talking over it after the first twenty minutes.

I'd agree, with the added endorsement that Ghostwatch owns. I have been meaning to see The Stone Tape, as I love Nigel Kneale (as everyone should).

Yeah, I've been meaning to see The Stone Tapes too, but couldn't find it streaming anywhere. Looks like you can buy it in a three pack with A Warning For the Curious and Year Of the Sex Olympics (???) on Amazon for under $30 US. If you could switch out Sex Olympics for, say, Whistle and I'll Come to You, that would be an awesome block of creepy movies.

However, Sex Olympics sounds good for different reasons:

quote:

"(1968) Brian Cox, Leonard Rossiter, Suzanne Neve, Tony Vogel. Bizarre drama about Earth in the distant future. Overpopulation is a big problem so television has been filled with gluttony and porno programs in order to put people off food and sex. It is also the year of the Sex Olympics. However, when TV ratings fail, a reality-based show is introduced in which a real-life couple is deposited on a remote island with no modern conveniences. Considering this was a British TV feature, itŐs amazing to see nudity and gore. Intriguing subplots make this a most unique piece of filmmaking. From a b/w kinescope."

Brian Cox in the 60s in what I'm guessing will be a loopy social critique that will probably have at least one scene approximating a freakout on a Soma holiday? Yes please.

Saw II is better than the first one. It actually realized the series' concept, whereas the first Saw didn't have enough ideas to fill its running time, and filled in the gaps with a by-the-numbers old detective/rookie movie.

I remember seeing Saw in the theaters and thinking was a low budget cash in on Se7en that got caught in limbo for a decade. Was really unimpressed. Saw 2 didn't impress me either, but at least it was unintentionally funny and... the needles. Oh god, the needles.

The BFI are going to release all of the Ghost Story At Christmas BBC productions on DVD: http://www.britmovie.co.uk/forums/latest-dvd-releases/112149-bbc-ghost-stories-christmas-bfi-dvd-release.html

That's terrific! I'd love to own a clean copy of the original Whistle and I'll... That movie never fails to get under my skin, even in broad daylight.

Has anyone seen the remake? Does it measure up at all to the original adaptation from the 60s?

Well, I had a good laugh at the end and enjoyed the movie.

I'd like to recommend The Reflecting Skin. It fits this thread and hasn't been mentioned yet.

Dang, I haven't thought about The Reflecting Skin since the 90s. It was one of those movies I rented as part of a batch from the 2-for-a-dollar racks at Family Video back in high school. If I remember correctly, they used overgrown fields very effectively; oppressive golden walls of grain, undulating in the wind..

I like Session 9 a lot less than I did when it came out, but the soundtrack by Climax Golden Twins remains a terrific haunted afternoon album.

And yeah... that creep-a-zoid twinking piano bit. I think CGT actually pulled that from another 50-60's Avant Garde composer?

Just for clarification, I still really enjoy Session 9, but I was obsessed with it on release.

The Last Will & Testament of Rosalind Leigh is pretty creepy. Not gore or anything like that either. Might be a little too melancholy and low key for a group watching though.

Not at all, i just watched the trailer for that and it's perfect. The exact kind of thing i'm after.

Awesome, I think you'll like it. I think it's gotten too little exposure because the cover art on Netflix- featuring a sinister glowering angel- doesn't really do a good job of conveying what you're going to get. It looks like dopey fun Chiller fare you'd put on in the background (that's why I watched it for the first time), when it's really a languidly paced story about unbalanced mother\son relationships, loneliness, delusion and regret. The angel statuary choked suburban McCastle is a neat character in its own right and its transition from tacky to a genuinely threatening space is pretty effective.

I've gotta watch Session 9. I've seen you guys talk about it for years and somehow I've just never watched it.

It's not an amazing film, but it's a fun film with some amazing parts. Great atmosphere, great soundtrack.

Its got David Caruso doing his usual thing, but David Caruso is like the cilantro of acting. If he's a turn off then he's going to ruin Session 9 for you.

Like...Is it supposed to be told from Catherine's perspective and we are just seeing her interpretation of the other characters...

I thought everything was heightened and distorted by being viewed through the lens of Catherine's nervous breakdown, but that the people were all being kind of smug and awful at the same time. Most of the other people in the movie were just indifferent born rich 20 somethings smelling weakness and being lovely for sport, but that Virginia's resentment for Catherine and assumption that she was just acting up for attention is what drove her to twist the knife over and over.

I saw The Conjuring 2 for the first time last week and I really just don't get what makes these movies so popular. They're competently made, and entertaining enough for a lazy Sunday, sure. But how they ended up making hundreds of millions is baffling to me, they're just so average. I guess one of the biggest things is Wilson and Farminga, the chemistry they have is very good.

For fun put on The Enfield Haunting right after you finish a view of Conjuring 2. Conjuring makes the Warrens into aw shucks superhero Americans whose sheer temerity and goodness hold a terrorized family together. Man Warren even steps in during a pivotal scene to become a temporary acoustic strumming "cool" singin' dad for the widow's family.

Enfield's portayal of the Warrens (well, their stand-ins) is somewhat less... heroic.
