The ending is meant to evoke the idea that Simon possessed both the girl and Gordon. I actually had pretty much the opposite reaction to you; I went in expecting, based on what I'd heard, that it was a non-supernatural horror film, and was surprised by the ending (although I still liked it). Again, it's really up to individual interpretation.
