Well my martial arts journey really started out all wonderful and I ripped off a toenail in the first training session. This should make kickboxing practice real fun... The thing I've noticed is I'm really lacking knee mobility. Any kick above the waist and it gets really hard for me to straighten my legs. During stretching too it's really hard to reach my toes while keeping my legs straight. Besides the standard "reach for the toes" stretches, anyone have any good ideas for stretches/exercises to help with it?

Well I felt a bit silly in the last kickboxing practice when I found out we're about to have a belt test. I didn't even know we had belts. What should I expect? They say no one really fails but now I feel like a high schooler again so I'm nervous about it. Didn't really help my feeling that day when the the instructor wanted to introduce us to BJJ type training and we were doing rolls and sideway rolls and backwards rolls and leaping rolls and shrimp walk things and who knows what for a beginning warmup. They were really fun actually but God drat I don't bend that way!

Ligur posted:Ahh, off to teach basic coursers in the fearsome, too dangerous to train techniques of Savate cardio-kickboxing in a few minutes. First basic course class for me this year and it's their second class ever. So many questions which make me tremble in anxiety. I'd say that usually when girls end up in the kickboxing gym they actually have at least a bit of basic fitness covered and are actually interested in the sport somewhat. Those who don't are probably joining Elixia's cardio boxing classes. I know our gym also has a separate "fitness boxing" group for people who want that.

Running is good conditioning but it does matter how you run. Doing sprints gives a very different workout from running long distance. It's all good though.

I kind of want to try out jujutsu this fall but can't decide on the type. Around here I can either train Hokutoryu Jujutsu which is a Finnish invention that has karate style standing combat, judo stuff and jujutsu. It sounds pretty varied but also like a bit of a mixed bag that I fear might be a bit unfocused. I'm loving kickboxing but kind of want to try something with more grappling, which I don't know how much it has. The other option is BJJ which is from the stuff I've seen looks like 100% ground grappling? What should I go for? I always find it so difficult to commit to these things.

So the past few days I've been looking at rash guards, gis, videos of BJJ and overall been stoked as hell about starting it and tried to curb my enthusiasm a bit while waiting for the basic course to start. Now... Can someone explain to me why the hell BJJ gis look like big ol' advertisement boards for whoever manufactured them? Also this is a bit embarassing... But I used to be a huge guy and have an.. unusual amount of lose skin. Like.. It's going to be easy to grab. How sturdy is one of those gis? Is there are risk someone will grab at my skin through it? I'll get a heavy-duty compression type rash guard anyway. Those always help until I get someone in a white coat to slice the extra bits off...

They drove over your abs with a truck? Man that gym is hardcore. We just get pounded with a gym ball sometimes. Glad to hear you seem to have had fun. Didn't really have the best sparring session today. Anyone have any good tips for fighting people who are better than you and larger than you? I'm pretty much the shortest guy at my gym, scrawny and bad at this whole "fight" part of "fightsports". Anyway, there are like two guys smaller or same size as me and both vastly more experienced than me. It's really drat hard to get in on someone with a foot more reach than you and more experience... Somehow everything I planned goes out of the window and I'm just standing there thinking "how the gently caress do I attack?" and can't come up with anything. Also I learned a valuable lesson about people today: They feel far more secure about kicking you in the head if you wear a helmet.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Spar more, learn more, don't be afraid of going in close. The problem has been that we're having the hottest summer ever and that's diminished our little group to like... an average of five or so guys. Not a lot of variation in sparring partners right now. Great for technique practice, but sparring is a ego busting. God drat love this stuff though. Need to practice more.

And I mean these guys who keep shaking or twitching their hands all the time before they punch. Or just all the time even if they will not. Obviously they have learned it somewhere. Like a movie or watching some sort of Muay-Thai clips where the fighters stalk forward, balanced on their rear leg, moving their fists up and down all day or whatever. I was thinking of this yesterday after sparring yesterday. It's like... What are you doing? Some guys wave your fist around, shake their fists or stand absolutely still before doing some combination. Unfortunately my reaction is usually to freeze up and start wondering how I'll get hit now that he is going to try and hit me. And then I get hit instead of you know... Blocking or something... So I guess it works against dumbasses like me

Yeah all I had was tiny nick from kickboxing and a bug got in through that. It was so small I didn't really even think about needing to cover it or anything: Cover your cuts until they are fully healed. Even the small ones. I already was pretty careful about always showering but I'll definitely scrub up even better in the future. I let the gym know I got a bug from them so they can apply some napalm on the mats if they think it's needed.

Man I'm really loving the mix of BJJ and Judo I'm doing right now. The Judo group ended up being mostly a smaller group of older dudes while the BJJ group is filled with young bucks in drat good shape. I get a brutal workout with the BJJ guys and the Judo side is lighter on the physical stuff and has more technique. Best of both worlds. Plenty of different kinds of training partners on the BJJ side and plenty of time with the instructor on the Judo side. Rolling around on the mat is tons of fun and I've learned that I'm actually pretty drat nimble. Considering I used to be a 180kg lumbering tub of lard it's god drat liberating to feel like a boa constrictor while defending against someone a head taller than you and 20kg heavier. Judo owns too. Some of the movement is like... Competitive dancing with an unwilling partner or something. drat beautiful to see someone who really knows his stuff do it. God drat grappling is fun. Now if only I wasn't so bad at it...

Haha. I'm the opposite of that, Rabhadh. After kickboxing I'm really liking BJJ and Judo because I hate hitting people even if they want me to. No problem tearing off their arms and chocking them though! I mean that poo poo's part of the "gentle art". It can't be too painful, can it? On a related note my throat has been sore for like two weeks now because of all the choke holds we are doing and my dumb rear end not tapping out early enough. God drat I love this stuff.

I'm in an Alliance gym and we have a compulsory "beginner's class" but I don't remember if we ever covered what a guard is. We're taught basic move and stuff to do get into better positions, basic jits techniques overall. Also quite a bit of "mat aerobics" to get some mobility and jits muscle going. Then again I was laid out with my leg infection for the very first classes so maybe they did cover the basic terminology during those classes... Would make sense. Still it's probably better to not spend too much time on terminology and stuff since you can just Google that poo poo. Do the stuff you actually can't do alone and expect your students to do their homework. Also ukemi. A good amount of ukemi.

Putin is legit judoka and sambo dude for sure. He won "Master of Sports" for both in the 70s which I understand is like the national champion of the Soviet Union. We got a Russian judo club practicing on the next mat in our shared gym and they do sambo too. As a judo white belt all the difference I see is the pants. Their coach looks legit as hell. Grey hair. Buff. Russian.

The delicate setting might also be too low temp to actually kill whatever is causing the infection. I'd get some antimicrobial spray or something and shoot that up in there then stick them in a freezer.

Got my first taste of BJJ sparring last night. Was about as fun as I expected and you sure can poop yourself in a few minutes of grappling. Managed to land in some weird way on my ring finger though so now it's in pain but other than that it was the most fun I've had in a long time. It's just so cool when you recognize your partner going for an armbar or something and all you can think is "No loving way are you getting my arm, gently caress you! Imma gonna posture up and get outta here." and actually manage to remember some way of breaking a guard. There's now a purpose to the techniques you just don't understand when you just do some technique drills. Not that I could recall a single sweep nor managed to recognize a good spot to go for a submission. Just sorta spazzed out a lot I guess. Didn't get submitted though so yay for that I guess. How common is sparring from positions? Like someone starts from the mount, someone starts from the guard etc.? In kickboxing we always started like we would have if we were starting a round. Looking at the way the more advanced classes drill they usually start from the ground but not in any particular position.

Yeah I don't see how else you'd spar in striking either but in grappling starting from a certain position to target-practice escaping it or how to take advantage of it makes sense to me. I'm just wondering how common it is.
