I use Thunderbird for browsing. It's the best, free, text newsreader for Mac that uses a gui that I've found (Linux and Windows users have more options). Its filtering features aren't that great for usenet, but they've gotten better with recent updates. Eternal september Is a popular free server with decent spam filtering.

Google groups is pretty bad. I don't use it for anything except their archives. A significant number of people have their newsreader set to automatically ignore all posts from there.
